Reduced recoil loads???

Anyone using off the shelf? Pros cons? Any brands better than others?  What you using in??  My deer hunting will be mostly shots within 100 yards. Now and again past that I guess but rarely. I got two shoulders going belly up on me and my 30-06 makes me remember this every time I shoot it.  I have the Savage Trophy Hunter 11/111 .

When I  was looking at loads to compare to in reloading my 308 for the pistol, I think I remember some of them stating that the impact point at 100 really didn't end up changing. The performance was about equal to a 30-30 and capable of taking deer inside 200 yards. I think they went with flat nosed bullets because of the slower velocities. I believe the '06 was comparable in the reduced recoil loads.

 

Might want to invest in a really good butt pad as well.

I purchased Hornady Custom Lite .308 loads for my fourteen year old twins' Savage 11/111s.

 

Both got deer this past Sunday.  Both shots were about 75 yards.  One deer dropped straight down, the other ran about 10 yards before falling dead.

I've tried the Remington reduced loads in my Kimber 7mm-08 and really did not notice any less recoil.  I would look into them, but would also look into a good recoil pad, a Dead Mule recoil reducer, maybe adding weight to the butt stock somehow and a good porting job.

 

You can also handload your own down to a level that really has a lot less recoil, although they will limit the velocity and range quite a bit

I've tried both below listed 30-06 low recoil loads in my Remington 7600 pump with the 22inch barrel.

 

The Remington "Reduced Recoil" load is a 125 grain spitzer type bullet at something like 2600fps.  Its supposed to fly as flat as the 150's I think, they say something like you can keep the same zero sightings.

 

The Federal "Low Recoil" load is a 170 grain flat nose bullet bullet at 30-30 velocities.

 

In terms of felt recoil, the Federal Low Recoil load felt more like a light 20 guage shove while the Remington Reduced Recoil load still had a little bit of sharp jab.

 

My gun still has the narrow plastic butt plate.  It has a Leupold vari-x 1-4 scope on it.  Shot at 4x.

 

Funny, but the gun shot the Federal loads very well, about 1 1/2 - 2" groups @ 100yds., while the Remington load spray them all over the target at about 5-7" groups.

 

In my gun, the Federal loads felt lighter and shot better but basically reduced the gun to a 30-30.  Fine for introducing new comers if that's the only gun available for them to shoot.

 

I also bought some Remington 30-30 Reduced Recoil loads with the 125 gr bullet, but haven't gotten to shoot them and sold the gun.

 

Oh yeah, just remembered.  My buddy bought the Remington Reduce Recoil loads in .308 win for his daughter and she likes and shoots them very well.  We can't find them anymore so he worked up a similar reload.

Great info. I found some Hornady low recoils this past weekend.  29.00 a box. Owch. Going to shoot some here in a few weeks and see how they go through. Pretty sure I saw Hornady in .308 next to the 30-06 in Dicks FYI.

 

Good news is a finally got my reloader out of storage yesterday.  It was given to me some years ago when I was not hunting. Its pretty old, from like the 60's I think.  Not even sure it works, though the guy who gave me said everything was there.

 

Seems I should be able to reload for less than 29.00 a box.

Remington reduced recoil works fine, and other than the recoil I doubt you would find much difference in performance, both at the range and on deer.......I've used and seen it used in both 30-06 and 308.
