UpstateNomad90
I just got done cleaning out my muzzleloader, set it up just as it should be and it appears my firing pin is riding on my primer. I noticed a smaller dimple when I took the primer out last time but now this has me a little worried. Anyone know what might be causing this? Or how to open where the hammer is housed to see if it looks okay? Thanks in advanced. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ants
Is it on the half cocked/safe position or are you gently letting the hammer down, all the way to the primer, and carrying the rifle like that??
UpstateNomad90
Neither, the only time the hammer gets cocked is when to shoot, other than that it never needs to be cocked unless I am going to shoot. That dimple was from me closing the gun tonight and giving it a once over. It wasn't closing all the way and riding on the primer.
steve863
A little hard to know for sure from the picture, but it sure looks like the breach plug isn't screwed in all the way. That would cause the gun not to close also.
bubba
is the breech plug in tight all the way? If so adjust the firing pin bushing and move it back slightly
ants
Not good….that primer looks like it should have gone off, with a dent in it like that. Definitly stop using the thing and contact CVA or bring it to a gunsmith who works on muzzle loaders... Good luck...
UpstateNomad90
The breech plug is in solid, I have pulled the gun apart to see if I can fiddle with the pin and bushing but it doesn't seem to unscrew like I have seen on videos. I will attach a picture of the pin
chiefbkt
I'd check the breech plug like the others suggested. GOod luck.

UpstateNomad90
Yep looks like a call to CVA first before I head to the gunsmith. Thanks guys for the help.
wdswtr
On my Kodiak the hammer doesnt push the firing pin in when its not cocked. When cocked the force of the spring pressure on the hammer just drives it forward to the point it pushes the firing pin and fires the primer. When you cock it and maually and slowly release the hammer back into non firing position it doesnt have the force to drive the firing pin. I would guess your hammer is the issue after looking at my Kodiak. it Shouldnt be pushing that firing pin so far forward. At least that is how it is on my CVA Kodiak. MACHINIST
I would pull the breach plug and give everything a healthy shot of something to kill all the residual black powder.I bet that there is some buried in the threads as that's happened to me many times and maybe some in the firing mechanism. If you feel comfortable taking that apart I would do that also. UpstateNomad90
After really toying with it last night, I think the spring that handles the firing pin is broke. The pin will fire without a problem, but when I break the gun open it never retracts from the fired state. If I run my finger over the pin it will push back to where it belongs. So tonight I am going to look for a punch so I can push the pin all the way back and fit a screwdriver into the bushing and pull everything apart to hopefully confirm my belief. After reading a lot online I learned that the pin should be cleaned as much as the breech, which I have failed to do. Hopefully tonight I will have an answer. MACHINIST
Yea the firing mechanism on any smokepole is just as bad in need of cleaning as any other part
UpstateNomad90
Well used some Sea Foam deep creep on the bushing and from behind on the firing pin/hammer and everything seems to be working. Currently it is a temporary fix as everything is in working order and test fired a primer after. I ordered the kit offline and will have to drill into the bushing to remove the old one because it won't move. Lesson learned the hard way. Thank you everyone for your help.

2012_taco
Sorry for the late to enter this thread but I had the same problem with my CVA optima and it was the firing pin that was rusted. I took it to a gunsmith and he removed the bushing for me. I cleaned and lubed it and now it works fine. I didn't realize that the firing pin would rust so quickly, now i remove it and clean/lube it with every cleaning.
