First-light
I'm in bow stand a week ago and here come two doe. About 50 yards out. They are walking, trotting at times then browse for a bit. They then head straight across my field to another part of the woods. All this time the doe that was behind kept her tail curled in the air. They didn't seem spooked just on alert. They disappear and not 2 minutes later the biggest blackest coyote comes rolling in hot on their trail. The thing is he wouldn't cross the field. He stopped where they entered and skirted the field edge until out of site. Was he hunting them alone? This thing was huge the tail was long and bushy like a Malamutes tail. I almost thought it was a wolf.I actually said how would I defend myself against that thing if face to face. bad enough we have bears now this super yote is out there. So does he hunt alone? At dusk I hear at least 2 packs howling getting ready for activities for the evening. Any info would be great. BTW just saying I have seen trail cam picts from the area 8P that show a cross breed animal coyote/wolf. The tale is that the DEC introduced these animals years ago and some survived. Hard to believe but I did see pictures and wether they were just huge coyotes I don't know. Any info on these puppies from a resident expert would be great. Oh BTW last winter we had two different groups of hunters in our area killing these things. The hunted with dogs and put a hurting on them over the winter. But by the sounds at dusk it seems there are still many out there.
Kujo48
Im not even close to an expert, interested to see what people have to say about this myself. From what i understand they normally hunt alone, but occasionally will hunt together as a family. They use an ambush method when doing this with one chasing and another up ahead waiting to pick up the chase, this way its easier for them to keep up with their prey. I dont believe they form large packs like wolves do and I know that just a few may sound like a lot more. Just last weekend I heard what sounded like a few yotes yipping and saw three doe crashing through the thicket. It sounded like the yipping was right on their tail but i never saw a yote just the bodies of the deer.
BizCT
A big coyote is 50lbs, a big wolf is 140lbs. There's no mistaken the two. However the east coast yotes are known to be much bigger than the Midwestern ones. growalot
Out here a big yote can go 70 #'s and that is directly from the DEC that investigated the first attack on our goats YEARS ago....I personally saw one that guys took out in SDansville area that was 83#...so that said...they do hunt in packs and will send in one or two to circle and move pray while the others hang off to the sides...I also know this from the DEC when one morning they did this to me in the dark on the way to my stand....I use to keep my hunting gear in the goat barn...that STOPPED THAT DAY the DEC told me what they were doing and ..I quote..."You were breakfast"...They moved off when I shook the action on my gun and ran...but even so they circled the area of my stand and called to each other ..infront and behind me until day light... BizCT
I wasn't saying they can't be bigger than 50, just saying 50 is a big one. Out west 25lb is a big one Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Carbonelement
i doubt a wolf would stop. they are pretty nasty and cover ground faster than I have seen any other animal in my life. They are built for killing.

phade
Maybe the DEC releases wolf/coyote hybrid can team up with the DEC released cougers and really do some damage to the deer population.

BizCT
I know I've showed the photos and videos before, but for quick reference here is a picture of my Dad with a wolf. This one was approx. 135lbs and no coyote in the world is anywhere close to this in size. growalot
Ya and I'm just saying what the scale did and I saw the thing...pretty sure these guys didn't give a tinkers damn about world records...thats like saying all record breaking bucks are recorded..no some ppl just don't care..imagine that... Also this wasn't a DEC spokes person or public relations guy...the DEC guy that came out has delt with and seen yotes in the wild a long time...and as I said this was before all the yote hype...years ago...I saw the ones that circled me and they were as big as my female shepard at the time ...she was easy 70 pounds. Now don't even get me going on they aren't aggressive..I already took that crap from some of you when I first mentioned what happened to me when I first joined this site....then over the years more guys have told similar stories about aggressive yotes..so don't bother going there.... Cripes almighty when one thinks life is all that is what you read ....you strole through it with blinders on.......
HOUNDS77
I highly doubt coyotes of the 70-80 pound range..50 is pushing it. A pack is usually mother, father and pups. Come late fall they split up.
growalot
Come late fall they split up. Well I had my gun on me and believe it was late Nov...because it was the crunching snow I heard that alerted me they were coming up from behind and as one was just passing me and coming across infront there was another coming in from where the first one did... I'm calling total BS on this 83 pound yote. I am also calling BS on a world record whitetail going undocumented. Sure high scoring deer are killed and no one hears but that's not so for "record breaking" deer.

BizCT
I think the problem is that many times the weight of furbearers/predators is over-estimated. Too many times I hear the following: 20lb Fox, when it actually was probably 6-8lbs. 40lb Bobcat, when it actually was probably 20-30lbs. I was lucky enough to shoot a 42lb bobcat in Minnesota. It is much much bigger than 99% of the bobcats I see pictures of. 50-70lb coyotes, when it actually was probably 30-40lbs here in NY. I shot a beautiful adult male coyote in Alberta Canada. My NY taxidermist told me it was one of the thickest and prettiest coats he ever worked on. It was 22lbs, which is an average size one there. They couldn't believe when I told them NY yotes go 40lbs+ sometimes. The same goes for mountain lions, wolves, bears, and even deer.
First-light
This Yote I saw was about 50 yards out. It was big enough for me to think that is a large dog. As you say the coat could of been very thick. He was jet black don't know if that is rare for them?
thphm
This was told to me by a local farmer. We ( Her and her husband ) when the go out to feed there livestock in the morning and lock them up in the evening go out packing Pistols because the were followed a number of times by Yotes and most of the time there was more then just 1. They have a variety of animals and sell Milk, Eggs, Chicken, turkey, pork and beef.
growalot
Shhhhh OMG...it just ain't so unless they read it somewhere and it has pics to boot...and the numbers on a scale are estimations unless other wise confirmed by a "proffessional"

Would make a really cool mount.
