Four Season Whitetail's
Did anyone happen to see the wording in the news about the Moose and Elk seasons and how other states have had success in transplanting Elk in Wis and Pa? To bad they closed Ny borders to bringing any cervids into the state unless you are a zoo. Maybe when this 5 year period is up they will think twice before the next ruling and we may very well get Elk in the big woods. I can see some lawyers drooling over that case if they try to pull that off before 2017. I know i myself would love one of those blood pumping bowhunts where you get so close you can smell the beast. fasteddie
I bet the insurance companies would want to keep elk and moose out of NYS . Having something like that popping out in the highway would be like hitting a horse !
Mr VJP
The Elk in PA are turning out to be high maintenance and costly for the taxpayers. They do bring in tourists, and that works because they are concentrated in a relatively small area of the state. It may not be long before the novelty of that wears off. They are transplanted Rocky Mountain Elk, which are different from the Eastern Elk NY used to have. NY habitat would probably not suit them too well. If it ever happens in NY, it will be decades before they ever allow a hunt for them. And like PA, a drawing for tags would be done where the odds of drawing a Bull tag would be very long. phade
I think PA has reported that the elk in the area generally push out the whitetails. Not sure the tradeoff is worth it based on economic impact alone.
sampotter
Well, the moose are already here- on their own. Plus, we don't need to truck in any more prions.

No we will just let them walk in. Just a matter of time. I myself hope someone does get the itch to bring some Elk into our great state. They wont for a few more years anyways. They would not want to deal with the fireworks that would be sure to fly.
G-Man
There was talk about it a decade ago, we don't have enough public habitat suitable for them if I remember correctly.maybe if the state would cut some trees in state parks it would be possible.. dbHunterNY
I would love to hunt elk and that's most definitely my game meat of choice. last time I had elk it was heavenly. however, call me old fashioned but I like to think habitat and animals should remain in their natural state. forget CWD and prions and any connection with game farms. elk haven't been here and they shouldn't be here. start dropping non native species of anything into a place they aren't and have never been could mean something bad for something, whether it be habitat or animals living in it. it's usually not realized until it's too late to correct it. I'm fine with not pushing and shoving mother nature too much. we screw stuff up enough as it is.
ATbuckhunter
As VJP said, these are Rocky Mountain elk instead of the Eastern Elk we used to have. I heard that the elk in New Zealand are Eastern Elk. It would be great to have Eastern Elk back in NY.
