Most owl mortality - actually raptor mortality - is young birds that starve to death their first year because they were not successful learning how to hunt well.

There was a falconer on here who mentioned that. I think his name was Chenango Dave. Haven't seen him lately, but IIRC he said that training a bird for use in falconry will greatly increase their survival chances later in life. I think he let his go at the end of every season.
