I have been wondering how one can tell the age of the fish they catch? Not all fish have scales. So counting them like counting rings in a tree stump wont work for aging a fish ,size weight are the only things I have to work off of.Any ideas how this is done.

Trout, catfish/bullheads, sharks, eels, rays, sturgeon.................

As for the age..I ask for the drivers license.

Interesting. Guess I've never thought about it that much. I've always looked upon those as tiny tiny scales making up the skin. And you beat me to drivers license comment lol

Well if you want be all technical...........Geez.....LOL

I don't worry much about the age of the fish I catch. As long as they are of legal size they get filleted and go straight to either the pan or the freezer.

Fish do not reach maturity until 5.5, I simply see if it has 8 pts and a large body,  lol.  If it does not have at least 140 inches of bone on its head I throw it back.  Sorry I think I have sun stroke and dehydration from fishing Saranac for 4 days.  Rock bass, small mouths and large mouth bass and some pike few perch as well.  Caught about a 3 + lbs small and large mouth and one decent 6 lbs pike where the biggies for the extended weekend.

You can estimate by length and width I would figure but to get an exact I am not sure.  Interesting topic.
