virgil
I walked my property this weekend for the first time since late May. My neighbor has had corn planted each of the past two years. This time, about half the field is something different and I'd love to know what it is. I should have taken pictures, but didn't have my phone with me. The field is thick with something that looks a bit like wheat to me. But, I know very little about farming and can't be sure. I did some looking on Google images and haven't found pictures of anything that looked exactly like it. I checked wheat, oats, barley, golden rod, etc. The deer seemed to like it- there were loads of trails into it and we bumped a few deer bedded in it. I know this is not much to go on. But any suggestions as to what it might be would be appreciated.

virgil
It did look similar. But, there were far fewer seeds?' at the top of each stem compared to what I'm seeing on google images.
growalot
You mentioned golden rod...so I have to ask how tall, but is it straight long leaf or stem with side leaf..then are the seeds at top dark colored? Those questions are leaning toward buckwheat....You also have Trictical...which is a rye/ wheat hybrid with a wider leaf characteristic. Either would be an early harvest. grampy
Perhaps it's sorghum?
virgil
thanks for the suggestions. I googled sorghum, buckwheat, and tricticale- no match. The height was about 30 inches. I thought it looked like wheat, but with much fewer 'seeds' at the tops. It looked pretty straight.
virgil
I found a picture of oats that looks kinda similar. Would that make sense for Otsego County?
stubby68
Barley?
dbHunterNY
if they get county ag funding/aid... the county often at times pushes for strips that alternate corn to something else like hay ground to prevent erosion, replenish organic composition of the soil, etc. when this happens it's usually got a blend of something fast growing to prevent erosion. it could be oats. usually it's mowed before it goes to seed and gets too tall. it can get baled up into straw for animal bedding or mulch. we typ use brome grass instead. looks a little similar.
