Common Sense Law or Zero Intelligence?

Recommended Posts

Virgil,

What is you position on capitol punishment? Should we truely have punishments that are deterrants? It probably doesn't fit into your view of a civilized society but these criminals....whether drugs, guns, or whatever....will never slow down until the punishment severely outweighs the gain from teh crime. NO parole for violent criminals......the prisons that are to house those that will not be returned to public life should be a square box...no rec yards...no internet...no TV. No interaction with anyone at all. Never to see the light of day again. But that wouldn't be civilized in your world.

In this new civilized world order you are so fond of......should the US pull back all of our aid and take care of those at home first?

What is your view on illegal immigrants?

And just a side note.....the majority fo the weapons used during the majority of the revolution were US made or owned by the 'rebels'. One of the advantages we had was our rifles had a much longer effective range than the typical rifle carried by the British.

my feelings on this issue are not due to apathy.  i honestly do not believe that we should have the right to own weapons that are not intended for sporting purposes.  i do not make believe that i have all the answers on the issue- what defines 'hunting weapon versus assault weapon, etc.'.  i just feel that there should be restrictions for the greater good of society in general, even if that means imposing on the 'rights' of some responsible people who either own these types of guns or would like to.  i really don't think it's such a slippery slope.  i compare it to controlled substances.  we have laws against those for good reason.  why one and not the other.  last thing, i know it's great for dramatic effect to mention hitler.  but, it's really a silly comparison.  and, as far as i recall, it was the french who armed the colonists, not a stockpile from back home.

When you start thinking with your head, not your heart get back to me. What greater good to society restricts weapons to law abiding people while allowing them to continue unabated in the hands of thugs & criminals. YOU CANNOT LEGISLATE UTOPIA! This is, after all what you want, right? There is no such thing as a law which will prevent people from getting murdered, else, Cain would never have killed Abel. Your belief system is simply scrwed up What you believe, or want to believe, is that people are all the same, and that  some "magic bullet" (pardon the intended pun) is going to make them all fine & dandy. Well, the world just doesn't work that way. There are evil people who will do evil things. If we want to stop them, the only way is thru force of arms. That you don;t wish to ever have to use one that way is fine with me, but don't seek to legislate that I may not, either. That is the totalitarian mindset that gets millions murdered by thei government. If you want to use guns for sporting purposes, move to England, or some other European country.

Virgil, you mention sportsman in England.  Do you know what these sportsman in England have to do to go hunting?  Do you know they are only of the privileged class and have to keep their guns at the club, not at home?  Do you know what their murder and violent crime rate is compared to a equally populated US state that allows concealed carry of a handgun for self protection?

Do you know that when seconds count, the Police are only minutes away?

They don't show up to stop crimes, they show up to clean up the mess and fill out a report.

culver- are you really interested in my feelings about capital punishment?  or would you prefer to stick with the versions of my thoughts that you and the boys have listed today, from capital punishment to utopia.  if you're really interested, i'm all for capital punishment.  even though it's been proven not to be a deterrent, i still think it's a reasonable punishment for certain crimes.  and are you really sure that there were guns made in the u.s. before there actually was a u.s.?  someone made a statement that implied that my feelings on the gun laws issue are because i'm thinking with my heart as opposed to my brain- i disagree entirely.  again, from the time we started this thread a few days ago, i never claimed to have all the answers on the issue.  but, i do feel that we can come up with something better than we currently have.  i don't think that the answer to a complicated question is to refuse to address it.  the gun problems in this country continue to worsen because the only people debating the issue are fanatics and extremists on either side.

the gun problem is the same as it ever was... the same type of people are using them  to murder people like they were 50 years ago.. since that time we have been bombarded by new gun laws in the hopes that somehow keeping the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens has anything to do with criminals getting guns.

Us that believe in the 2nd amendment have not refused to address anything... we have been adament in our fight for the enforcement of the laws that are already in place and stopping new gun laws that don't work to reduce crime. What you call fanatical and exteme.. I call vigilant and dedicated to making sure that our right to keep and bear arms is not infinged.

More gun laws and less freedom is not the answer.  More enforcement of existing laws regarding actual violence, as opposed to oppressive gun, magazine and ammo possession laws, is the answer.

Government is infringing on the freedom and liberty of law abiding citizens because it refuses to remove the freedoms and liberties of criminals and felons who have no respect for laws, citizens or America.

I'm also tired of taxes being spent in massive amounts to keep felons alive and living in prisons, where there is no hope they will ever become productive members of society.  They often come out more dangerous than they were when they went in.

More felons on the prowl is also one of the reasons more citizens want to arm themselves.  The inmates are starting to run the asylum.

as long as the topic of capital punishment has come up.. i'll put my 2 cents in... If in fact we are executing criminals as a means of vengence for what they have done then we become no better than the criminals themselves... capital punishment should only be administered for the sole purpose of eliminating any future harm to society by certain individuals that have already shown their intent to do such harm.
