I wonder if the falling numbers are a result of less people hunting?

less hunters and more people being selective in what they kill.

NYS Fish and Game magazine . Pretty decent magazine IMO.  Always current in what seasons are approaching and such.

While there may be many factors - the lower harvest numbers are likely most impacted by whatever is causing the national trend of lower population and harvest numbers. 80-90 percent of whitetail states are seeing population drops.

Whatever is causing it is likely in play here too.
