I have no idea but I doubt it. I saw some like that the other day and they looked nasty inside.

Yep. Gem-studded puffballs. I like these a little more than giant puffballs.

Actually scratch that. Upon closer look I wasn't seeing the little gems on the surface so I checked my sources and they're called pear-shaped puffballs. They are edible.

Thanks predate....still not sure I would feel comfortable eating them. Eating mushrooms is beat in my head as being more fatal than juggling flaming swords!

Care needs to be taken when harvesting small puffballs. Each specimen needs to be sliced in half to ensure that there is no gill structure present.
The concern is that the button stage of the Destroying Angel and also the Death Cap look similar to puffballs.

These are Shaggy Manes, and are edible. We had these last night with backs traps from one of last year's deer. They paired well, and we cooked the manes over medium high heat with butter and garlic.

The hard parts close to the tree are less desirable from what I read/watched online. I plan on cutting the tender ends off - read it allows for better grow back in the future

Be on the lookout for hen-of-the-woods too at the base of big oaks. I found this one this morning

Nice but none too perky, make note of location since chicken and hen of the woods reliably repeat on the same tree for years.

So I cooked up the chicken I showed the other day and was not impressed - maybe they were passed their prime but the mushroom flavor was weak and I was a bit put off by the "dry chicken breast" texture. Least I'm not dead. That's my first foraged mushroom so fear factor was high

I pass on 5-10 hens every fall. I just don't care for them. Wegmans sells them for like $13 per pound.

Yeah it didn't look very prime, but you're lucky to have found one this late in the season. They're usually done by mid Oct.

That's encouraging!! Someday I'll hook up with somebody that knows there shit. Read that as try what we pick first so I can see if they die.
