First-light
I'm thinking about planting about a dozen or so 5' tall trees. They will be planted in a field that is back in the woods a bit. Any tips for keeping these babies safe? The area is pretty moist and they will get full sun. I'm worried about the deer and bear.
Stretchhunts
fence them in. We tried and the rabbits and deer ate hem to the ground. We put orange construction fence around them the next time.
nuynai
I use tree shelters. They protect the trees and act like a greenhouse. Only thing is, I cut them about 6 inches above the tree, let the tree grow to the light, then once they get about 6 inches over, redo the tubes again as previously mentioned. Deer may get the tops but rabbits and mice can't get in the bottom. At least the trees get to establish a good root system.

nuynai
Burt, once they get leaves, take some pics and send them to the DEC. I did this for problems with white pines I had and they replied, with the solutions. Good luck.
G-Man
I use 2x4 welded steel fence 5' high in a circle 2 ft in diameter keeps the deer off, don't use chichen wire as it is to flexiable and the deer will push it in to eat the branches. in the fall pull the grass off the bottom of the trees so the mice won't girdel them. NYBowhunter
I use welded steel fencing as well and place large rocks at the base to prevent grass from growing, I also secure the fencing in place by using a stake.

nuynai
IMHO, put down some black plastic also, as it keep in moisture and weeds out.
