how far do you shoot to practice

GREAT POST Sky!

Grouping arrows in an 8" circle at 50 yards does not guarantee a 12 yard 'chip-shot', however it does wonders for your confidence.

Especially when you see them big horns coming! Iv'e seen people fall completelly apart at deer under 20 yrds and shoot ten yrds over the deers back before. Some of the best target shooters make the worst deer hunters. Shooting is good to train the eyes, fingers and body to shoot correctly but if you can't overcome the mental overload it doesn't matter if the target is at 50 or 5 yrds.

I've got stakes all the way out to 50 yards this year. I haven't put a 50 yard pin on my bow in a few decades, but maybe I'll get back into some of the longer yardages just for fun. I love watching that arrow flying over those longer distances. I have the space to shoot out to 100 yards, but I value my arrows too much to be trying shots that far. 80 yards used to be my limit years ago, but I don't see that happening anytime soon again either ..... lol. I think I'll probably get back to 50 yards as my maximum this year just to see how it is going this year (and that will be only field tips).

That reminds me of back when I was shooting NFAA field rounds with a 40# recurve. That 80 yard walk-up was impossible to get a pin that would handle that far out. In fact it was even hard to see the target because your hand covered the target. that one was a true instinctive shot .... lol. I remember that I had a prism sight for some of the longer shots because there was no room to get a regular pin where it had to be. It seems that someone had a fix for just about every problem back then. It sure was fun watching those arrows arc up in the air and finally drop into the butt. I didn't even care whether I hit the bullseye or not. It was just fun watching that arrow.

still have two of the 2 degree prism sight scope in the shop. MY wife used them for all the nfaa shoots. It gave her the ability to have a mark on the Reynolds sight for the 80 yard walk up....The other thing I do is shoot the 3D's targets I have in the back hill. I have 17 locations with 2 targets to shoot at ( either deer or Bear )I also have two stakes at each location one is for youth or trad shooting and the other is out about 5 yards more is for compound. Some days we just pick a spot to shoot from and all are no marked yardage. Also I shoot al year around. That helps to give me the ability to hold. I still thin archery is about 20 % the ability to draw and shoot the bow and 80% is all in our heads.

the greater the distance, the less forgiving your rig will be, there for, forcing you to implement proper shooting fundamentals.. if you can practice out to 50 or 60 your shot groups will tighten dramatically at hunting distances.

i shoot out to 40  i can hit the kill zone on a deer target at 80 but would i shoot at a deer that far i would never even try it!!! in 35 years of bow hunting i can count on one hand how many time i have taken a 40 yard shot. i am 4 for 4 at 40 yards.
