If you have kids under 16 living or visiting at your home a new law is in effect:

The state Legislature on Monday passed a bill that aims to prevent kids from having access to guns in their homes, making it a potential criminal charge if the weapons are not safely stored.

The bill, if signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, would also require individuals to safely store their guns when children are present in their homes, even if the kids do not live there.

I read through most of that and am confused. Section one clearly states you can't leave it unlocked if someone under 16 is in the home, but section two says you can't leave it unlocked out of your control and doesn't specify anything about 16 or under. Are they sneaking that in under the guise of keeping kids safe?

Section two amends the penal law by adding a new section 265.50 to
provide that no person who owns or is custodian of a rifle, shotgun or
firearm shall store or otherwise leave such rifle, shotgun or firearm
out of his or her immediate possession or control without having first
securely locked such rifle, shotgun or firearm in an appropriate safe
storage depository or rendered it incapable of being fired by use of a
gun locking device appropriate to that weapon.  Failure to safely store
rifles, shotguns, and firearms in the second degree is punishable by a
fine of not more than two hundred and fifty dollars.

Jerry, I am not a lawyer or claim to be able to interpret some of ways these laws are written. You could very well be  correct. The media is reporting that it means that if you have someone living with you OR visiting under the age of 16 they(guns) have to be locked up. I would be willing to bet most lawmakers would be unable to give an explanation of the intent or how it is to be enforced. They are just finding more ways to waste our money.
