G-Man
Have a friend who put in a plot behind his house and it looks awesome 2 ft tall already ,did the soil sample, added what was recommended . Problem is no deer are in it! They use to be in the goldenrod overgrown field all the time! Taking a fallow field and creating food may destroy what animals really need , cover for bedding ,nesting, bugging, fawning. Before you try and develop a property do an honest assessment of what the property has and what it lacks.. cameras can show you what areas are used and what time of year.. trails show travel through area ,beds , droppings , these should be located and should be present at all times of year. Deer vacate in winter? You may need thermal cover, disappear in summer? Perhaps a water source is needed , only passing thru during season, perhaps bedding cover ,or food.. an honest assessment is key to creating your own hunting paradise!
G-Man
So my friend removed security travel cover to put in food, not a total loss he can plant screening plant, shrubs and develop a area that they will feel secure in and perhaps feed.. but a simple assessment could of prevent t a few year set back to his ideal hunting spot
Zag
Yep agree 100%. Our food plot we put in last year is in a good spot. Why only a good spot?? It’s fairly close to our neighbors and wind direction isn’t always ideal when approaching but it was a fairly useless part of our property for food and cover and it was level and near bedding! LET EM GROW
I would never turn a golden rod field into a food plot.. loss of a lot of different food species and a ton of warm and cool season cover .. Maybe taking the edges or the center and carving out a plot would be a beteer idea, but leaving alot of the fallow field alone.. Id rather have a fallow field over a food plot anyday of the week.. Rack Attack
G-Man, maybe your friend can remedy his problem by planning the food plot with corn and leave it standing or portions of it standing. that way the deer may feel safer bedding and traveling through there with the added benefit of some food. Deer use our standing corn plots all the time for those reasons.
landtracdeerhunter
Radish might be a plan, come late July. Works great with surround Hay, Corn, and Soybean fields. Proven time in and time out here, but then again all areas are not the same.
