eagle rider
Can anyone tell me about state land opened for deer hunting near piffard in Genessee Cty. My goal is to ultimately get access to private land but I wanted to break the ice up there this season. I believe its a shotgun area. WNYBuckHunter
I'm not sure on the piece, but my mom lived in Piffard for a few years when I was a kid. It is a shotgun area. Some nice deer down there, lots of farm land. I'm going to have to look and see what land was opened up. I'm guessing one of the big farms must have handed land over to the state rather than have it get developed. It's not too far from Geneseo. fasteddie
I lived in Piffard for a couple years when I was a kid . My Grandfather and other relatives lived in Piffard also . Piffard is between Geneseo and Greigsville . I believe Grow lived in Piffard many years ago . There is a large fenced in area that used to be Lucidol Chemical . I have seen many deer inside that fenced area . The Abby Monestary is on River Road in Piffard and there are usually deer near the road and you have to be careful when driving there . eagle rider
Guys this is helpful, does anyone know of any clubs up that way that might be looking to add members? The areas that I was looking at ar close to the college (Genesseo) and near the abbey in Piffard. And now that is definately a shotgun county? fasteddie
There is a Club ( can't think of the name of it ) on River Road in the town of Leicester . It's between Cuylerville and Retsof . I believe there is a waiting list to join . There is an initial fee to join and then you have to do 2 jobs a year at the club or pay a fee . They also give you Raffle tickets to sell . You either sell them or buy them yourself . It's the only one I know of in the area .
eagle rider
Any idea what the fees / dues are?
fasteddie
Any idea what the fees / dues are? At one time they were about $250 Initiation Fee and $50 each time you didn't do a work project . I think there were 2 work projects the 1st year plus $50 in Raffle Tickets to sell . I don't recall how many acres of club hunting land there are . I believe most of the members are gun hunters and several only hunt opening day / week . growalot
So...I have searched all over and refrased several times....How did you hear of this ? because I can't find it...even on the DEC web page
phade
I know Piffard, too. Spent many a night there while in high school. Interest in what land opened up there. I may call the DEC about it. There were always deer in and around the fenced in chem plant. The York Sportsmen club leases land either from or bordering the monestary. Great deer there...but in general, I find the clubs to be a waste of time and money unless you use the shooting grounds. I've spoken to some of the members and I just kind of laugh at the general level of hunting knowledge - and I'm not expert. Seems very much like a social club with more politics than the presidential election.

WNYBuckHunter
I'm trying to remember what years my mom lived there, I'm thinking probably 85 to 88 or so? I was @ 9 or 10 when she moved there. I haven't been down that way in some time.
fasteddie
We used to make a stop at the "Yard of Ale" . Before that it was the Colonial Inn . My grandfather's house was next to the railroad tracks and when the trains went by , the dishes would rattle .
