Tree Identification Video - Butternut

Down In central VA right now and came across this weird tree . Anyone ever see this type of leaf before ?

tulip tree = yellow poplar, they are a tree native to NYS

Yes, my understanding is that pattern makers liked it because it was very stable and easy to work with.

Tulip poplar is far more prevalent in PA and south than it is in NY.  But it shows up in pockets - finger lakes, along the Erie and Ontario lakeshores, I find some in Letchworth Park.

That makes sense, my land is fairly close to Lake Ontario.  I guess this must be the northern extreme of their range.  They are are a really interesting species.

Wonder if Tulip is good smoker/cooking wood? Guessing no if it's a soft wood???

I know black walnut isn't. Extremely bitter.

Tulip poplar is the green board you buy at lumber yard ,sometime sold as poplar wood.  I wouldn't use it for smoking has acrid smoke
