  1. Sure can hunt them at night. Set up some bait sites. We use roadkill deer.
  2. We run coyotes with hounds all winter in Durham. Got probly 15 from Jan to March..Called in 7 more down in Cosackie area. Can't wait to do it again.
  3. I live and hunt in 4S. Even tho it's been slow for me guys been hammerin some good ones. Just what I know of is 2 9's and 4 8's. If you got a facebook account go to "Greene County Hunter" page and like it. It's my hunting page. Got some good pics of deer. I been on a good sticker 9. If I work til dusk and drive by where he is, no doubt he'll be out in the field. If I go hunting, sat like 20something hrs in 2 different stands, I won't see him. Oh well, that's hunting..
  4. Good luck bub. I havnt really seen much, well, besides when I drive by the field and the "sticker 9 " is out eatin. I got 2 sides of his bedroom covered. Persistence will prevail; I hope...
  5. Love it. I can't say I agree with a statewide AR. Some areas with low deer densities need to adjust their deer management accordingly. I am not a "horn hunter" like so many anti - AR guys like to call us pro - AR guys. For me it isn't about having to kill something to make me feel successful. I hunt almost every day of the season. From bow opener to muzzle closing. Last yr I didn't shoot a deer until muzzleloader; an adult doe. Not because I didn't have the chance, but because I love being in the woods. It's a great feeling letting an animal go, that you know you could shoot, and hoping he makes it. Really, what challenge is in shooting probly the dumbest animal in the woods, a yearling buck during the rut. There's no doubt in my mind that thru the last 6 yrs of me letting young bucks go has benefited hunters who may not pass on bucks in the neighboring properties. I have exclusive hunting right to almost 500 acres, and post and patrol another 300 +. I know I got it better then most. There's plenty of deer around. The problem is age structure. I don't know alot of guys that put spike horns and 4 pointers on their walls so the hunter who says horns don't matter yet has bigger bucks on their wall is conflicting. Meat hunter or not, their is something magical about adult bucks. Are heart races more and our smiles are bigger when we get to harvest one........The gentics argument doesn't work neither, for the most part. There's no way of knowing what a spike horn or 4 pointers genetics are.Once they're dead it doesn't matter. They could of been late born fawns. Also, the does carry the same genetics as the bucks. Thier's a misconception for some that spike don't grow into big racks. Science has proven that wrong. The 3 point rule isn't perfect by far. It's taking out alot of young bucks that should be passed, but it's a step in the right direction. For me I only shoot adult deer. Buck or doe. I take the time to know what I'm shooting at, and if it's something I really don't wanna shoot; I don't. Theirs not alot of use who "need" to shoot deer to survive. Enjoy the outdoors. Don't just shoot a deer because it's a legal deer. My 2 cents......
  6. Love it. It's a step in the right direction...The AR that is. Oct 1 bow opener in SZ; love it too...
  7. I live right across the river from Hudson. Been here all my life. As the coyote and fox population goes up, grouse population goes down. Their use to be alot of grouse around, even native pheasants. Now there's very few grouse and no pheasants....
  8. I've seen 4 or 5 in the last few weeks. Too many of em. Can't wait to run the hounds as soon as deer season is wrapped up. Nothin better then hammering a few dozen coyotes in the middle of the winter
  9. I think they would do fine in NY. They are Russian. No biologist tho. I know I'd shoot as many as I could. Dam good eat'n they are..
  10. "doesn't seem sporting to me" - this implies that the way you do things is more ethical then the way I do things. Hence your hunting is better then mine.. "if you are really a "HUNTER" then that is what you should be doing... hunting... not laying in wait." - this implies that what I choose to do isn't hunting. I'm not really a hunter. That's down right arrogant and you have no respect from me for that comment.
  11. Wasn't really directed towards you. Did you get what I was saying?
  12. So what I'm gathering from this is are earliest ancestors weren't hunting when they were waiting behind a rock or sitting in a tree? Come on. So if you're still hunting and the animal is walking your way. While you're still walking towards the animal, your hunting but as soon as you hide behind a tree your not? Nothing like trying to make yourself higher then the rest of us. I think it doesn't matter how you are pursuing and animal. As long as it's a legal method what difference does it make? Doesn't make one hunter better then the other. I've shot animals every way. The botom line is it's just as hard to outwit and animal in a tree, behind a rock, or following it's trail.
  13. I'm addicted bad lol. I'm self-employed and I work almost every day of the spring and summer so I can take every day off from day 1 of bow to the last day of muzzle. I gotta admit I might miss one, maybe two mornings. Hunting season takes a toll on the body. Now I'm addicted to hunting coyotes for the dead of winter. Calling and running with hounds. I love it!!
  14. The 17, in most coyote hunting situations, is to small. I hunt coyotes with calls, baits, and hounds. There's not alot of situations that the 17 would be the caliber of choice besides over bait at 20 yds lol..If you're saving the pelts I found the 204 a nice shooting round. Quite a few guys that hunt with us shoot them. I shoot 'em with my 308. I'm not concerned about the pelts. I wanna make sure they go down in all situations. I might get a 223 tho, but not this year...

    10 to 2

The biggest buck I ever shot was at 11:15am. Last year I went to a stand at 11am and had a 3 and a 4 pointer chasing does around me for probly an hr. Definately during rifle season I've had good stuff happen between 10 and 2.
  16. Ohhh yaaaaeh. gotta love white horns. Nice bucks..
  17. Beautiful animal. I wouldn't care about the myth. It would make an excellent mount...
  18. The local Sportsmens Club knows exactly how many birds are being released, when the birds are being released, and exactly where. You can even go and watch if ya wanted to. It's just not hunting to me. When I was a kid it wasn't like it is or was today. Now, with fewer and fewer spot to release their ends up being 25 guys hunting 200 acres. Mind you also all the neighboring landowners can't stand it because these hunters knowingly walk right by posted signs. They think because the pheasants were release a half mile down the road means they can go wherever the pheasants are. I know because I kick them off every year. I have all sides of sorrounding properies posted and patrolled. Wouldn't be so bad if these guys just stayed where they belong. And as for the trout stocking program, I avoid stocked trout as much as possible. I can't stand pellet fed fish. I wish guys wouldn't follow the stocky truck around and think they are catching trout.
  19. I shot a 200 lb sow last year in South Carolina. All I know is they taste great and I would have a continuous supply of wild pork if they come close enough to me....
  20. There's not alot of hunting to it. I been in the same area all my life,41 yrs. There's no more native birds due to the increase of foxes and coyotes. The pheasants are raised in a pen. Hand fed. Thrown out in the field one evening and the next crack of dawn getting shot! I have hunted pheasants before. Alot! Had a Germen shorthaired pointer for 12 years. I agree it's great watching your dog work, but to think what happens is hunting, I don't think it is. Find some native birds maybe...
  21. As far as I know they aren't releasing any around my neck off the woods, Greene county, and I think that's great. Ya, pheasants taste good, but its not really hunting to me. Might as well throw some chickens out in the field and shoot em. I bow hunt next to one of the only areas around were they released birds and it's like world war 3 crack of dawn. Hope it's done with honestly..
  22. We do run into when the dogs run off and are on a coyote someone might ask what we're doing. When we tell them we're hunting coyotes with dogs they say "Shoot 'em all! " So it works out pretty good lol
  23. We used roadkill deer to bait coyotes. If there's no snow we drop the dogs on the bait. If a coyote has been there the dogs will let you know. If there is snow and the bait hasn't been hit we ride the back roads looking for track. We have a huge area were we have permission to shoot as many coyotes as we can. If we can find no track or nothing at the baits we just free range them. The dogs cover alot of area and sooner or later they will jump or cross a track. Then it's game on. Shooters are almost always welcome. The more shooters the better the chance. If there is a power line, clear cut, etc. we line shooters up. Basically try and surround the coyote. Alot of times once you figure out where the coyotes cross an opening they will do it again. Kinda like deer. The dogs have gps collars on them and we all have marine radios so we can keep re-positioning ourselves. Sometime they will bay up, specially big male yotes; or circle. Some run as fast as they can out of dodge. The second to last day of the season, last March we chased one 12 miles lol. The last day over 8 miles. It sure is fun and beats staring out ur windows in the dead of winter wishing you could shoot something...
  24. Do it! I know a bunch of guys in my area, Greene County, that have hounds. Now I have 2, Running Walkers. Ones a 2 yr old who is a really good dog, and I picked a pup up, he's 5 months old. Can't wait to get him out. I know hias blood lines and he should be good. We probly got 20 last year with the dogs. It's a blast. The picture is small but this is what hunting coyotes with dogs does. 4 out of 1 woods. Dogs were chasing yotes for hours lol....
  25. Dang. You about summed it up. My theory is this. I have been hunting for almost 30 years. For the last 5 or 6 years I have changed my life (became self-employed) partly because of my desire to hunt as often as possible. Starting from opener of bow to the last day of muzzle I makes it out 99% of the time. Last year I missed maybe 2 days out of the whole season and that was bow. I haven't missed one day of rifle in years. I have posted and patrol of 700 acres. 345 of which I am the only one allowed on. I have reached a point in my hunting life to wish to shoot adult deer. I have set standards for myself. No longer do I wish to shoot 1.5 or 2.5 year olds. I have no desire to make it easier on myself but shooting a desirable deer in my area, and I have it alot better then most hunters, is like hitting the lottery. In the 5-6 yrs of having permission to hunt where I do, I only see maybe one desirable buck a year. Maybe. We have great genetics around the area. All the deer need is age. One of the problems is the southern border. Those hunters shoot everything with a 3 inch horn. A few years ago I watched a beautiful 6 pointer all rifle season. The last day of the season he got shoot. I don't expect anyone to set there standards high because I have, but wouldn't it be a great thing to be able to watch mature bucks run around the woods? Fighting? Rutting? I have never seen 2 mature bucks fighting only because theirs not 2 mature bucks in the area lol.. I put my time in. More then most. I hunt more then anyone I know. I love the woods and the animals. I shoot does every year. I have no problem with that. Why not want a better deer herd? Ok. I'm done rambling. Sorry. :-X
