  1. I hunt state land that borders lake Ontario in the northern tier near Henderson Harbor. The hunters there are respectful to each other but the land tends to be littered with trash. I can't say who is doing it because hunters share the land with hikers and campers.
  2. I think I will make a pot of this soup too.
  3. I am pushing 64 and feel myself slowing down. I hunt, (alone) about 3 times a week and sometimes wonder if I shot a big buck just how would I drag it out of Cicero Swamp alone. Most of my hunting is for deer but would like to try the wild boar hunting down near Cortland. When younger I did a lot of rabbit hunting with a Beagle but just don't see many rabbits anymore, just the ones in my back yard. I feel I enjoy hunting more now, life is sweeter.
  4. I was hunting near Mexico, NY opening day with a couple inches of snow. Saw a few deer tracks, only a few shots off in the distance but no deer in my area. Fighting a bad cold with lots of coughing today but will be back out hunting Monday assuming I feel better. At 63 I need to take care of myself plus I don't enjoy hunting in the rain anymore. It is hell to get OLD!
  5. My rifle is a Marlin 30-30 but have killed more deer with my 16 gauge bolt action JC Higgens shotgun. It shoots as good as most rifles.
  6. After 43 years, I am retired but still can't find enough time to go hunting as much as I would like. NYDeere
  7. I hunt with a traditions, 50. cal carbine as well. I use the Maxi Ball with 90 grains of Pyrodex and it shoots nice out to about 100 yards. I have never had the need to shoot farther so am very happy with this load.
  8. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
  9. Do we have a classified section on this web site or am I just not seeing it? Thanks from Bridgeport
  10. Hi Guy, I have hunted some in Cicero Swamp, mostly on Island Road. I see a lot of tracks and see deer at night in fields when I drive near the area but never shot a deer there. I think the deer are nocturnal in the swamp. Larry in Bridgeport
  11. Thanks for the replys and your thoughts. As mentioned, my slug gun with the rifled barrel is my main gun and it does shoot a good sabot slug and most likely is the "cylinder" like Pygmy said. I have this other gun with the full choke and want to take a new hunter out with me. I will take it to the range and shoot it this week and let everyong know how it shoots a Foster slug.
  12. I have a older 20 gauge shotgun, 2&3/4" chamber with a full choke smooth barrel. Can I shoot the regular "Foster" type slugs with the full choke? My new gun with the rifled barrel I believe is improved cylinder choke and I use the new sabot slugs in it. This older gun I am asking about is a backup / rainy day gun. Thanks, NYDeere.
  13. Awesome, Thank you, I will pick some up and go the range to test fire.
  14. When using the pre-lubed maxi-balls, do I have to use a patch like I do with the round ball? Thanks, NYDeere.
  15. Thanks guys for your thoughts and suggestions. I will look for the Power Belt and Maxi-balls next time I am in Gander Mountain. NYDeere.
  16. I bought the old gun used and don't know the rate of twist. I think it best if I use round balls in the old gun and keep the sabots for the new in line rifle. Thanks guys for your ideas.
  17. I have a question on muzzle loaders. I have 2 of them, a new in line and a old cap and ball type. My question is: Can I shoot the new maxi-ball and sabot type bullets or do I have to use only round balls with granual in the old gun? Thanks, NYDeere
  18. I hunt deer with a 12 gauge Remington 870 with rifled barrell. But my faveorite shotgun is a old bolt action JC Higgens 16 gauge that has been re-furbuished and looks like new and shoots great.
  19. Nice deer Deerslayer. Is that a .50 cal?
  20. Hi everyone, My name is Larry also known as NYDeere. I recently retired from Deere and enjoy deer hunting. A little play on words but love hunting in upstate New York.
