Its all good now,.... I hit pay dirt with 38.6 grs of Varget underneath a 200 gr Hornady Roundnose. It's printing an 1 1/4" at 100 yds. I don't think the little crank-fire carbine is capable of any better. The round looks to be a real sledge hammer. I will let you know how I do with it in November. It consistently went the chrono at 1996 fps. I'm sure in the thick brush this poison pill will put them on the dirt.

What do you use to clean Pyrodex fouling?
eagle rider replied to RangerClay's topic in Muzzleloaders
TC Foam and Birch & Casey Cleaner. The combo works well and gets all the fowling out pretty fast. I've never had the guts to submerge a barrel in soapy water.... -
Nope a 2-7x Nikon. There is no doubt that he rifle will be a little 35 Cal pump station disconnector inside of 100 yds for deer and bear for that matter.
-
Never loaded the flex tip, I did shoot them when I used the Leverevolution ammo. I think the heads are expensive.
-
Bought a box of 200 gr Hornady Round Nose. Gonna match the COAL of the Leverevolution, up the loading on the Varget for the new bullet to 39 grs and see how it does.
-
Thanks fellas. I did use the aol of the Hornady ammo. Same primer as well. The variations were big time obviously in the bullet itself and the powder. It wasn't that I wanted to better, but just as good. Hornady uses the Leverevolution powder, I am using Varget. They have a 200 Flex Tip, I am using 180 gr. Speer Hotcors. Maybe I shouldn't be whining about it. I am committed to trying it again. Hell I cornered the Market on Varget thinking it was gonna be my new fav.......

Well gents (and ladies) for those of you who have read my previous posts, I am truly pissed. My 336 Marlin in the beloved 35 Rem will not do any better for me than 2" at 100 yds. I can swear I was doing more like an 1" at 100 yds with Hornady Leverevolution, but with my hand loads things should have gotten better. Well they didn't. The easy answer is to switch back to the Hornady ammo, I just can't for the life of me think why my load ain't working. Anyone have wisdom on this it will be appreciated.

The Expanded Antler Restrictions - Who is excited?

Virginia uses spread. 16" outside = 3.5 years. Pop one smaller and it will cost you $500. $250 of it goes to the guy who reports you. Like I said in an earlier post between that and an aggressive doe cull season in December, and you see almost 1:1 bucks and does walking around. Seems to me like they got a handle on this. I hunt near Flint Township in Faquier County. This is not a poor county at all. Its a lot of vineyards and horse properties. -

I agree with the a general lack of knowledge when it comes to hunters aging deer. That said last year I shot a 3.5 year old 5 pointer, four on one side and the other was a long spike. He was genitically challenged for sure. I think the economy where we are is very much at risk. There are not a lot of jobs in the area. Every dollar spent counts. Start making things harder for hunters and they will just go elsewhere. The folks up there will just suffer more than they already have. I hope this isn't a myopic plan the DEC has, but something tells me it just might be. -

Calling the DEC. The issue in my mind, is bigger with broader impact, No DMU Permits + AR in 4W will likely drive hunters away from the area because they will not likely be able to take deer, or increase poaching. Either is bad, but the first is worse. The economy in Delaware County is very fragile. If you make is so that hunters move to different areas/counties local business will suffer even more. Residents of the county will loose tax revenue and County-wide services will become even more curtailed. Let's face it, most of upstate is hanging on by its fingernails as it is. I think this can be the final nail in the coffin for many upstate communities. -

Is nobody else getting this,.... 3 on one side plus low chances of doe permits in most of the 4's means no chance of venison on the Christmas table. Since the chances of seeing a shooter are already low to begin with. You want better genetics, it ain't only about controlling what bucks are shooters. You need to tighten the buck to doe ratio as well and cull older does out of circulation. Limited DMU permits make this nearly impossible for rifle hunters. Places like Anticosti Island, or the Sancutary or Tara Preserve have the genetics they do because the couple AR restrictions with doe culling. I hunt in Northwestern Virginia as well. They have AR's requiring a 16" outside spread. Fines start at $500 for non qualifying deer. We shoot beautiful deer there. They also have a doe cull hunt in December. No special tags and two Doe a day. Much different from NYS, you actually see as many bucks walking around in Dec as you would see does. -

The issue is bigger than AR's in my mind. The DEC is becoming more restrictive in area's where deer are plentiful for what reason. DMU permints in 4W are already low probability to be issued. Now we a shooter buck is 3 or better on one side. The rpple effects will be far worse than hunters not getting deer economically, I think. Who's gonna hunt there if you can't take anything in the rea unless its an older buck. Besides, plenty of us are still in it for theeating. So with low probability on DMU permits in 4W, thanks for a lot of hunters likely going hungry. I'm sure I will have many kind words to say about the DEC when I'm siting in my stand with NO DMU permits watching an endless parade of does walking by me. Oh and by the way,...... The AR's are a feel good with no bioloical benefit at all. Thanks again DEC. -

My two cents as a hunter in 4W,...... I honestly doubt we have the herd genetics to have AR's make that much of a difference in anything less than eight or ten years from now. I think it took PA bout that long. With limited access to doe permits were gonna be seeing a lot of poaching. I also think local businesses will suffer in an economy and an area where they probably counldn't withstand much more. With no real chance of getting dmu permits and 3 on one side restrictions the weekend warriors from downstate might just give up on Delaware Cty all together and go further north, or out of state all together. Once again NYS is being very short sighted and is probably yeilding to some lobby pressure. Makes you wonder if anyone from the DEC really knows what's going on in the Counties. Where we are all you see are does and they limit dmu permits, and we are not cabin hunters. We spend a lot of time in the woods. Want better bucks, I'm okay with AR's, but make the dmu permits more available. That seems like a reasonible balance to me,..... wait a minute we are talking about NYS here, forget I said reasonible. -
So hands down,... higher confidence levels for 7mm-08 Rem. over the 243 Win..... LOL. I was thinking about 42 grs of Varget under a 130 gr Sierra Gameking as a starting place for two reason. (1) I have two boxes of the 130 grs laying on my bench and (2) I have an unopened can of Varget.

Bought a TC Encore barrel new off ebay, 7mm-08. Gonna put it on the Encore Prohunter. I have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 sitting in the closet to mount up on it. Anyone have experience with this round. I've heard some really good things about it for deer.
-
Distance, accuracy and reliability make it hard to beat a both action. The 270 that's you asked about is awesome for anything on hoofs in North America. Ammo is accessible, it beat up your wallet or or your shoulder. The round is inherently very acurate. If it were me, put decent wood across the counter and get yourself something that you are going to enjoy owning (shooting and hunting with). If its strictly a hunter go for a synthetic stock and save yourself the headache of destroying a nice piece of walnut. Last point, the best scope you can afford with high quality bases and rings. If you are about making sure its the right shot, buy yourself a sweet single shot, you can get a TC Encore just about anywhere.

Eskimo's hunt Polar Bear with 223's and shoot them in the ear. Boers used to hunt and kill elephants with 7x57 Mauser's. I've seen two 300 pound plus black bears fall to a 25-06 and half a dozen wild boars to 243 Win. I paunch shot (by accident) a whitetail doe with a 270 WSM a few years back. It ran well over a mile on me. Its all in the placement. I think the bigger you get in the boiler room the faster it maybe. But dead is dead, and some guilded meatl going through the lungs will do it every time.

Thanks adirondakbushwack. Got the trigger done and its a great shooter now. How are the recoild pads on the regualr (not Flextech) stocks? Are they hockey pucks or something softer than that?
-
Don't get me wrong, in tight cover I will reach for the 35 Marlin hands down. Sitting up in a stand where there is more time to pick out a great shot, Well that's a whole different story.
-
I'm kinda of liking the way Bubba thinks too.
-
If you were following the earlier post I put up, I was getting opinions from you all about 243 Win for deer. The thing of it is, I got the TC Encore shooting great with this round using a 100 gr Sierra. I can just as easily slap a 30-06 barrel on the Encore and use that instead for deer. All things being equal, who would elelct to go for the heavier weight chambering for deer and why?

The Motor City Madman, Backstrap Assassin himself,..... Say it ain't so! Guilty plea planned in Ted Nugent AK hunt case ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Tue Apr 24, 03:30 AM Rocker and gun rights advocate Ted Nugent is expected to plead guilty Tuesday to transporting a black bear he illegally killed in Alaska. A plea agreement with federal prosecutors signed by Nugent says he illegally shot and killed the bear in May 2009 on Sukkwan Island in southeast Alaska after wounding another bear in a bow hunt. The bow incident counted toward a state seasonal limit of one bear. Nugent's Anchorage attorney, Wayne Anthony Ross, says his client didn't know he was breaking the law. The agreement, filed in U.S. District Court last week, says Nugent knowingly possessed and transported the bear in misdemeanor violation of the Lacey Act. According to the agreement, the hunt was filmed for Nugent's Outdoor Channel television show "Spirit of the Wild." http://optimum.net/E...Id=55807407-F0c
