Sounds like either bad glass, possible rings misaligned which are straining the scope or ammo. Remount the scope, lapp the rings if needed and make sure the ring allignment is dead on. Try different ammo as well. Have you called Savage yet?

in case anyone is interested,... new trigger arrived. Installed in about two minutes. Zero creep, two pound break is sweet and the safety slides in and out of position silently.

Y'all.... I have a 270 Win, Weatherby Vanguard Back Country in the safe I bought back in 2008. I like the rifle because its light weight and stainless, so crappy weather is not an issue. The trigger, no matter how much I adjust it is always a little creepy. I took the plunge and ordered a RifleBasix trigger on Thursday. It seems to be as good a the Timney according to the reviews. Its advertised as zero creep with a 2 pound break. Anyone have experience with these????

What caliber to complement a 30.06 ??
eagle rider replied to mac's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
223 is fun to shoot and good for varmints, but too light for deer. 25-06 will easily do both. -
Shot at a huge 8... Please tell me I'm not crazy
eagle rider replied to Geno C's topic in Bow Hunting
I would say mixed metal heads can do this. No blood but gurgling is strange. Let us know if you find him tomorrow. -
Read Chuck Hawks post on recoil..... Rifle weight is a factor, but more of felt recoil has to do with recoil velocity. If a rifle is heavier more of the recoil force is taken up. What folks complain about is the sharp snap of recoil. Weight of a rifle has less to do with than cartridge selection than stocks do. A 270 WSM has significantly more felt recoil with a 150 gr. bullet than a 30-06 with a full house 180 gr load. The reason is recoiled velocity. That said,... IMO shoot what you like and get a good recoil pad. It will take a lot of the sharpness away. I have a 300 Wby Mag in my safe. The felt recoil due to the pad and the geometry of the Weatherby stock is only slightly more than a model 700 30-06.

45 Long Colt, Ruger NM Blackhawk

Thanks Warren,.. Your rig looks sexy scoped. I have handgun hunted but his is my first time with a single action. I had a Super Redhawk in 454 Casull and a model 529 in 44 Mag. I sold both and (although I regret getting rid of he S&W 529 a lot). The Super Redhawk was just ridiculous. I did take deer with both. There is something more nostalgic with he single action. Thanks for the thumbs up on the load and my accuracy. -
I dunno,.... It took NYS a long time to fess up to the wild boar issue after sightings were reported from Erie Cty all the way east to Broome and Cortland. Adirondack area folks have been talking about big kitty's for the last decade. I have seen them in the flesh (or fur as it would be) in the South Carolina Low Country. They are no nonsense animal. That said,... It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the good folks at the DEC were trying to keep a lid on this.

Okay,.... Load is 250 gr Nosler HP on top of 26 grs of H110. Revolver has a 5.5" barrel, it's printing 2 3/4" group at 25 yds (iron not scoped). I'm using it for in close whitetails. Do you all think I should try for better?

The upper left limb on my Bear Strike began to split..... Don't understand why.... It was replaced with a Legion,.... Anyone have experience with his bow?

Okay y'all almost that magic time to get in the woods with our 35's.... It can't come soon enough. -
good luck fellas...... let's get some deer on the ground.

To Tink's or not to Tink's, that is the question....
eagle rider replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Deer Hunting
Yup,..... trial and error. They work but its never just one thing that does it. Its always a mixed bag (IMO). A little on te bag, stink on the ground, some grunting and maybe then. Like the expression says, you gotta make your luck. A guy uses stink, smoke a carton of chesterfields on the way to the stand, is noisey, fidigity, reaks from a bacon and egg breakfast and is silouetted in the tree,... brother you can put out a gallon of stink, there will be no honey in that hole. -

eagle rider replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Deer Hunting
My honest to goodness recipe is light rattling over a mock scrape inside a well hit rub line. I will hang some Tinks nearby or use a Tinks fog can. Then I just sit in the stand and wait for the action to start. I've been fortunate with this strategy. I will rattle every 20 minutes or so for two minutes lightly on a rattle bag and use a buck bawl call in between with a grunted that can develop some volume. Deer will literally appear from anywhere, bucks will come in either pissed or nervous. I guess everyone likes to see a good fight,.... The Tinks stink in the air just seems to help to convince them to come in. I did this once on the ground and wound up with a monster eight pointer practically not stopping his sneak into the rattling until he was practically standing on my boots. It works well, do it up in the trees and your gonna get a better view and give yourself a few seconds more to pull off a better shot. During bow season, same combo of stink and noise had six bucks in front of my stand throughout the day (average)...... I'm a believer. -

TnT .... Tinks n Tampons..... Last year I went through more rags than Mrs. Eagle Rider did. Got the dead deer to prove it was money well spent. -
Yeah they are particular about what they spit out. Overall, I'm not a big fan of Varget. I thought I would be and bought two pounds. Now I'm he'll bent on using it up and moving on from there. I know the feeling, I can get RL19 to lace 30-06 150 gr Noslers through the same hole and RS Magnum to do the same in 270 WSM and Win with 130 gr Sieras. Those are running through two different custom rifles and one very high end Weatherby. All bolt actions. I don't expect a crank fire 20" rifle with a trigger that feels like I'm breaking glass when it's squeezed to perform like the other three. I own this thing for in-close work in swampy brush and drives. For that,.... Its been good enough. Like Guns&ReligonCop said, its 9" to worry about,.... Not 1 1/4. Hopefully, come 11/16 I'll have something to brag about.

Anyone else starting to feel the craze......
eagle rider replied to eagle rider's topic in Deer Hunting
That's great fellas. I thinks it's gonna be an awesome season. Seeing lots of deer moving around. Just need to get a pin on one first. -
Nov is around the corner..... Soon enough we'll all be taking to the hunting woods. Anyone else getting fixated besides me. Got my stands ready, I've mentally packed my gear at least 50 times. Got a new round working in the 35 lever gun.
-
Yeah, I hear you fellas! I love zippy speedsters, but there is definately a charm to these old relaible rounds. I like the 35 in close and in light brush. I can realistically count on one hand the number of times in NYS that I had opportunities to take 100 yd or better shots over the last 30 years. I think the 200 gr SPRN will befinately be a show stopper at impact.
-
Actually I believe 63.5 is the max loading in the Nosler Guide. Hunting in NY and Virginia,... Usual stuff. The ranch in Virginia will give me a chance to stretch the legs on the 30-06 with this load.
-
Yeah it is..... I plan on using this in load in Maine in the spring for Black Bear as well.
-
Can't you just hear he creepy organ music and ominous laughter in the background..... For my brothers of the 45 Long Colt.... 26 grs of H110 and a 250 Nosler is a real sweet spot load in my single action Ruger. I'm getting 1415 fps and tremendous accuracy out of my Blackhawk which only has a 5.5" barrel. The recoil isn't all that awful considering this is a full house load.
-
If anyone is looking for a great load,... This one is a jackpot.....62 grs of RL19 beneath a 150 gr Nosler BT. Primer, Win LR. COAL 3.35. This shot consistently through my Red Hawk Rifles Alaskan, and my friends Vanguard S1 Backcountry. Accuracy was within a tenth of an inch between the two rifles. MV in the Vanny was 2984 and 2996 in the Alaskan. Both groups were well under SubMOA, and in the neighborhood of .5".
