  1. Can anyone tell me about state land opened for deer hunting near piffard in Genessee Cty. My goal is to ultimately get access to private land but I wanted to break the ice up there this season. I believe its a shotgun area.
  2. It was a Sierra Game King. I'm thinking about switching to the Speer Deep Curl in 150 gr. i will still be up around 3000 fps. The 130 gr was 3208. I'm also switching from Ramshot Magnum to Winchester 760.
  3. Hey fellow New Yorkers, been taking some time off the blogs, but I'm back now. So time to refelct, I shot the 6 this year at 100 yds with the 270 WSM headon. I was using a 130 gr bullet. It totally decintrigated inside of him. It liquified his heart and a half a lung. I'm thinking about going up to a 150 gr as a deer round in that rifle. Its my go-to-gun (Weatherby Vanguard). Anyone out there have 150 gr in a 270 Win or WSM experience for deer. I just want something beefier. Don't misunderstand, the 130 gr worked fine. The deer took two steps and went down. But I want a bullet to stay together too.
  4. AR provided that Doe Permits are more realistic.
  5. depends on how much deer movement is going on. If they are chasing hard, then all day long. I get in about 45 minutes before firts light and still until last light to keep the stand unspooked. If its mid season, I will sit for a few hours at a clip depending on the deer travel patterns in my loaction. I have some afternoon spots and some morning spots.
  6. The issue with the higher powers in our woods is that they come at the expense of the lower power magnification which is often more favorable to have.
  7. Just thowing my less knowledgeable two cents out there,..... I hunt in a rifle county and usually shoot a 270 WSM with a 130 gr bullet. In most cases the deer fall whithin a leap or two of where they were shot, if they didn't go down in their tracks. That said I couldn't imagine putting a vitals hit on a deer with one of these howitzer sized rounds and not having a DRT deer. I am curious about this because I am in a situation where I might be joining a club with land in a shotgun county. My limited experience with slugs are a long time ago. I used a 3" Federal Sabot that is no longer made. I hit one big doe head on at 70 yards and flipped her A$$ over Tea Kettle. Needless to say she never got back on her feet.
  8. MAKE SURE ITS UNLOADED WITH THE ACTION OPENED!!!!!, Half hitch behind the front sling swivel and a clove hitch midway up the barrel. Haul your pack up with a separate rope. You can just use a figure eight on a bight for that knot through the straps.
  9. I like this response. I would add, just make sure you have a nice high percentage shot! Good vitals. I do go out west every year for something or another. I mostly use 270's out there, but no matter what stouter bullets for just about anything that is approaching deer size game with moderate velocities and your good to go. Certain rifles will prefer one commercial ammo over another. So try a few different boxes to see what shoots best.
  10. Welcome to he world of arguing versatility!!!! I have a bunch of 30-06's. I also handload, here is 30 years of my logic,.... In bolt actions I use a 150 gr bullet of moderate construction and I load it up around 3000 FPS at the muzzle. You can get the similar results in Federal Fusion, and Hornady Customs. I would STAY AWAY from the SST Polymer Tipped Hornady loadings. They are too light construction and explosive at impact when speeds are too high (like they will be under 100 yards). Energy is shed too rapidly and there is very low weight retention. In other words, lost deer can be be an issue. The basic logic being in this simple rap (LOL) A BULLET HEAD WITH EXPOSED LEAD MAKES A DEER DEAD. Thanks for liking it, I just made it up. In a semi-auto where I am more likely to shoot in lighter brush perhaps in a deer drive situation I use a 180 gr Speer Hot-Cor and load it so that I am 2600 FPS out of the muzzle. The rifle cycles great at these velocities and the accuracy is exceptional. The negatives are that it has more of a rainbow trajectory but inside of 200 yards its just fine. The reason for the speedy, flatter shooting loading in the bolt action is my thinking that there is more time to be precise and I have the advantage in my favor. I can take a longer shot and usually have time to line things up better sitting in a treestand or still hunting, than you would driving where action is exploding around around you. A happy compromise is a 165 gr factory loading. Good luck and let us know what you settle on.
  11. Regular season only,..... 4W restricts the permits and makes them impossible to get without preference points. The WMU is full of does. Its rare to see a mature buck if ever (31/2 year old or better). What you do see are herds of does running across fields, in church yards, cemeteries etc. The other tell-tale sign, road kill, is everywhere. I don't understand the logic of managing them this way. Getting the genetics of the location to a higher level by giving out antlerless permits is a widely accepted approach of biologists. A tool of better management is taking the does out of the population. I also hunt a little in Rockland a little, its the complete opposite. Permits are easy to get and does are better managed. More roads, more people driving and probably fewer collisions per capita.
  12. Yeah I've seen that happen too. You might want to take that rifle to the range this spring just to be 100% sure its spot-on. Sorry you got skunked. It happened to all of us at some point. Next season you'll be in fat city with venison in the freezer. That's just the way it goes.
  13. Guys, thanks!!!! i might just give it a shot.
  14. Thanks, I have an opportunity to join a club that has a land lease in Genesee. I was just trying to get a feel for it. I've never hunted beyond Ostego and Delaware Counties.
  15. Anyone deer hunt in Genesee County? What can you tell me about buck to doe ratios?
  16. Funny I was thinking the same thing. A buddy uses a pair of amber/copper tinted polarized glasses and swears he sees sharp as a tack with zero glare.
  17. A Nikon Prostaff Slug Scope and a Bushnell Rangefinder with ARC.
  18. Thanks guys, I find good glass make ALL the difference when the light isn't perfect and bright. The rifle I used is topped with a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40. The scope even at that part of the day was clear and fairly bright. He was a chunker of a buck.
  19. Got this guy up in Deleware County on our land on Sunday. He was a six but broke off a tine. 110 yds at fading light head on. 270 WSM round entered in the base of his neck. Blew out his heart one lung and a third of his liver before exiting on his left side. One leap and he piled up. He also came into some light rattling and a Tinks 69 Stink Bomb that I tossed out 20 yards in front of my treestand. He walked up hill following the scent like he was being pulled on a rope.
  20. I'm told is the real deal..... Josiah Cross, Texas Ranger, Clairmont Garrison Supervising Ranger, Ret. (a letter found in his desk drawer the morning following his retirement roast) Things that I found helpful by living this long and being honored to stand, work, friend and fight shoulder to shoulder with the Texas Rangers for 35 years. If you ever need my services, I'll be drunk in my goose blind. In the meanwhile contemplate my advice below. I will miss all of you, but don't be strangers. Show up at my cabin with your goose guns, dogs and finest bourbon. Josey Cross, T.R. Ret. The purpose of fighting is to win. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either... The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental. 1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you. 2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck. 3. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy. 4. When seconds count, the police are just minutes away. 5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.' 6. An old Ranger was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm ‘Ranger, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.' 7. Beware the man who only carries one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!! 8. Second place in a gun fight is first loser. Hopefully the undertaker has the skills needed so your casket can be opened for your family and friends. 9. The round comes before the sound,.... Always keep a loaded chamber. 10. I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, it can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all, I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' The last bit of advice I can offer,..... 11. Never get into a poker game with a guy named after a city.
