I should be getting about 1750 foot pounds with this load. I know its the bottom on the line up. Shot placement will be critical.

Anyone load 243 Win for whitetails? I'm looking for a 100 to 150 yd round using a Sierra Gameking 100 gr and Hodgedon Varget. The manual says I will get out of the barrel at 2838 FPS with 33.7 grs of Varget. I'll be using a 243 Win Barrel on a TC Encore.

thanks.

I bought a Encore Pro Hunter off a buddy for my son. The trigger on this one feels different than mine does. Its crisp, with no creep or slack but as it releases kind of heavy, Anyone else with a TC ever have this?

Muzzle Loader Season Success Rates- Souther Zone
eagle rider replied to eagle rider's topic in Muzzleloaders
Haha, I know it. So I'm hearing hunt over food plots for better sucess. I've hunted up there during bow season and see deer all of the time. So don't expect it to be like bow orf even gun season for that matter as activity goes throughout the day????? -
Ostego County what are the chances for a buck to show up during shooting hours in Dec? Better chances during archery

1 in 10's were designed around the 100 gr loadings.

35 Remington Lever Action Marlin
eagle rider replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Ants, there are a lot of stories just like yours out there. They are awesome rifles and a great round. -
The 35 is awesome northeastern whitetail round. It a rimless 30-30 case necked up to 35 cal and was invented as a semi-auto round in 1908 for the Remington Model 8. Its pretty acurate upto 100 yds. Mine is a Marlin 336 with a 2-6 Nikon on it, Its never been turned past 2x and I've anchored a lot of deer with it. The Whelen is an entirely different round. The brass is incompatible between the two.
-
So what did you end up buying? I'd say if you are buying only 1 rifle as a do it all kind of thing, the 30-06 or 308 bolt action is the way to go. If you are gonna be stomping through the northeastern woods and you're looking for a deer/bear rifle exclusively the lever gun Marlin's in 35 or 30-30 is a great option too. The new ammo options are awesome in either caliber.

I know I'm late to this party and not sure a reply even matters anymore. The 444's will be hard to come by and draw big money with Marlin canceling the loading last year. That said I'm sorry I never bought when when I caould have. The recoil is not any worse on a 222 than a 180 gr out of your 30-06 bolt action. Having shot both of them, the straight wall cartridge even pushing a big 240 grain brush bullet is okay to shoulder. Accuracy to 100 yds is pretty good too. When I had the chance to buy one, I opted for the 35 Remington in the lever gun. I would only use it for deer, black bear and pigs and honestly for all of those, the 35 has done just fine. Great in the brush or even 100 yds across a field (mine is about an 1" to 1.25" out to 100 yds). Recoil is less than your 30-06. Meat damage in minimal and it knocks them off their feet especially with the newer Hornady ammo. I hit an older meat spike in the neck (by accident) two years ago with it using the Leverevolution ammo. In a word it was devastating. He went no where but down.Anyways, if you are looking for a bursh gun in a lever action, my search would start and end there.

Anyone use a 243 Win for deer hunting? I ordered a barrel for my TC Encore Prohunter in 243 for 'yote shooting, but I thought I could double its purpose for deer as well.

We have 6 Dicks F&S ladders up for the last 4 years. They are holding up well. My only advice is get real rachet straps on them. Not the shoe laces they come with.

Pistolp, I did mean can't. Thanks for pointing that out.

I can also change my engine oil with a hacksaw and a pair of channel locks. It doesn't mean I should,.... right tool for the right job fellas. A 9 or a 40 (my personal fav for defensive shooting) are designed for close in combat. Which the last time I check is not what we are doing when we deer hunt. Lots of thinks will kill a deer. A well placed speer, a boulder, or a stick of dynamite. All three will kill a man too. It doesn't mean its ethical to use those as hunting implements. I have no doubt a Black Talon will kill a deer, it would kill any of us. I would not want to get hit by one, a Core Lockt bullet would ruin your day too. The Core Lockt is designed to have a more effective killing range for game. I fully understand why JJ needed to use his 40 S&W. Both were last resort kind situations. The way I read his post it wasn't his intention to hunt with the 40 as his primary firearm. I think handgun hunting is great, go out and get yourself a 44 or 45 Colt (not an ACP), and get a deer inside of 50 yards and you'll be having backstraps for sure with a single well placed shot. Upstaterifle, NYS law is you can own or have a pistol in your possession without a valid pistol permit in a class that is purposed for carrying it for sport (so a Premise Permit wouldn't be okay). If you were to have an unlicensed pistol in your posession, in my line of work we call that a "Gun Collar." Its a NYS minimum 1 year jail sentence (statutory). Keep that in mind even if someone wants to loan a pistol to hunt with. For that reason most issuing municipalaties have a "target/sportsman" license classification. It permits you to carry the pistol for hunting purposes provided its legal to hunt with a pistol in that area. For example, if you have a vaild pistol permit from Dutchess County, and you want to take your favorite 44 Mag model 629 in the field in Westchester County you will be breaking the law. Because a handgun is not a leagl hunting implement in Westchester County. Therefore, you just voided the purpose of your permit. Hope that helps clear things up. It wasn't a bad question at all, and most people don't understand the limits of the law with regard to possession of a handgun for hunting.

When I came on the job we were still carrying 38 Spcl six shooters. Then we went to 9's for fire power. It was about as good as the 38's some said, I never believed it though. My dept now has us in 40 S&W's and I finally feel that I have all of the man stopping power I need. All that said, I wouldn't use it on a deer. I hand gun hunted deer with 454 Casull and 44 Mag, they both work great and if anything the Casull is a bit too much. I'm now going to a 45 Long Colt. I much prefer using a rifle. Deer as tough as nails and don't respond to getting shot like people do. Its all flight with them and they will run through a brick wall leaking blood all the way and still get a mile on you before they look back. So no, 9 is no good in my book. I think I just dated myself. Suffice it to say that there are rocks younger than me!

243's exit, a good bullet will exit no problem. A kid in our deer camp uses one. Makes them leak out of both sides and they don't go far at all. I believe he uses a Sirocco bonded bullet, 100 gr.
-
What do you guys think? I can easily load the Blackhawk to the heels of 44 Mag, The single actions have a nice natural point to them. I was thinking a 240 Gr Speer Hot Core with 25 grs of 296 gives 1250 FPS and 833' lbs. Inside of 50 yds, that will anchor a deer. After this season a nice in-close sidearm in the treestand would be a nice complement to the 270 WSM. The end of the shooting lanes are out at 200 to 225 yds so the short mag locks those shots nicely. There are a few close in trails on these stands that will put deer in tight, some within 15 yds. My Ruger Blackhawk has a 5 1/2 inch barrel.

As with anything else shot placement is key. Hit them in the boiler room and teh 243 wil do you right.

They look awesome, congrats!
