I think the NYS Parks are pretty strict about not possessing any firearms while in the park. The park cadre are usually right on top of anything bad that goes on inside the park. Travel to and from the park is an issue, but I really do think you are pretty safe traveling most places in New York State. If you believe you must go to a certain area armed you should rethink going there at all. That said, my daily 3 mile hike is across the street from my house on my hunting clubs property. There are two places I shoot at targets placed on piles of sawdust. (I also have 20 lb. dumbells stashed at two places I stretch and do pushups and water the dog). I shoot at least a dozen or so rounds every day. I've had two incidents with bears and one with coyotes in the 24 years we've been in the house. I always carry a "j" frame because of my neighbor's pit bulls that hate me and my old black lab.

When my children were little I saw on several occasions that the coyotes would come out of the woods/swamp at the approach of the school bus and follow the bus down the street to the bus stop. We always had an adult meet the children at the bus stop. Local fathers took up coyote hunting in a big way.

Didn't we all get a small check when President Bush came into office because there was a surplus? -
Worked in a German deli when I was very young. A kosher butcher shop on Ave B in Manhattan 7th and 8th Grade. Supermarkets and the garment district through high school. Worked at the corner newspaper/candy store/soda fountain on weekend nights. After a semester of college unloaded vegetables from freight trains at Hunts Point market. 4 years active in USCG, almost 2 years active reserve. 30 years FDNY. 10 years Army National Guard. Now I go to college and write short stories.

I have three children who have been to college. One is finishing graduate school in Montreal, one is going to graduate school in September, and one is finishing her sophomore year down at James Madison U in Virginia. They have mixed it up between public and private schools. I think you should always take advantage of the best scholarship offer your child gets. Cortland may have a reputation as a party school but I know they have a great library and my eldest's contemporaries who went there went on to graduate school and good jobs. St. John's is a great school with a great alumni network

Started seeing 4 hens in my area near Bullville about 3 weeks ago. Last week the group grew to be 9 hens. This morning was the first time I saw a Tom with the hens and he was a pretty big one. Must be related to the one I saw a few years ago. It was so big it looked like a walking boulder.

I had a deer with a busted up rear leg hide on my back acre for at least 3 years in a row. She produced a couple of fawns too!

Saw two of the smallest fattest spikes running full bore for about 1/4 mile from one field to another across the road. They were so fat their legs looked short. Wasn't hunting, driving my daughter to an audition in NYC. (3M)

when my children were little, various coyotes would show up when the schoolbus was driving around the neighborhood, the yotes would follow the school bus down the street

There's a sisterhood of does that regularly bed on one of my acres in the back. It's not huntable land because of the locations of houses and roads, but it's nice to observe the coming and going of bucks and does.

I was thinking of a AR platform to keep the recoil from making the gel in the back of my eyeball from coming loose. makes it lok like it's snowing dark snowflakes -

Ammo in your safe,really safe?
cityboy replied to Single_shot's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I did about 30 years in the FDNY. I remember reading one article in one of the trade journals Fire Engineering, WNYF or the old Fire Journal about the behavior of ammo in apartment and vehicle fires. Ammo in a 20 round box tended to cook and detonate without lethal force as the projectile was not confined and directed in a barrel. Ammo that was in a revolver with all cylinders loaded had the one under the hammer cook and detonate with a lethal amount of energy, the rest cook and detonate without the projectile achieving a lethal amount of energy. My experience as the "hot shell man" for the 5" gun mount on the ship was that I was told to get the cooking round that did not go off over the side before it detonated. From my experience for a misfire in the Guard with the 105 artillery, the TOW missle and the Stinger missle we were told to keep it pointed in a safe direction for two minutes and let the round cook. Attempt to remove it once to a safe area (a pit youwould dig) and call EOD. You're not allowed to have large quantities of ammo in your home in NYS, even if it .22LR. I think its close to the basic load for an infantryman of 210 rounds. Its been a while since I read that law. A large amount of ammo in a safe could build up enough pressure to be a serious, lethal problem. At shipboard and aircraft firefighting school the drill was to get water from a hoseline onto the 500lb bombs on the planes to cool them off. I'd be pissed if I was crawling through your house and your safe full of ammo detonated, could be construed as a boobytrap for first responders which is why you're not allowed to booby trap your home. There are laws and firecodes for storing large amounts of ammo, yellow, metal signage, distance from other buildings, and you'd probably need a permit. Ease you mind any? -
had a bear kill one of my neighbors goats a couple of years back. big old fella. my kids woke me up about midnight crying something was eating the goats. I got over there with a 44 and the bear is walking away with the goats head in its mouth dragging the body between its legs and my female neighbor is beating the bear on the back with a rake cursing at it to let go of the goat. Cop showed up and told me if I get a shot at it take the shot. I figured too many houses around I'd let them handle it. over the next six hours they must have shot it 30 times w/ 223 buckshot 9mm and 40. the bear would hide for a while under the trampolin and come out and try to move around again. the bear looked like a hole in the night it was that black

Are you FOR or AGAINST a change?
cityboy replied to nybuckboy's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I've considered hunting with an AR type rifle because my right eye can't take the recoil of a bolt, lever or pump gun. The jell in the back of the eye that hold the retina in place gets dislodged and it looks like rain falling. This doesn't happen with an AR. My wife thinks the AR is perfect size and power for her. The issue really is not hunting though. The 2nd Ammendment doesn't say anything about hunting. The 2nd Ammendment recognizes all citzens as members of the militia and as such the right to keep and bear arm to augment the regular Army, or to act when the gov't can't or won't act, or to defend yourself and your community if the Gov't ceases to exsist. You don't need a military rifle if the gov't is doing its job. You sure as heck will need one when they don't. I got my only standing ovation from a Manhattan Grand Jury for helping to stop a madman with a gun soon after I got out of the service in 81. The first cop I encountered and told about the guy with the gun said he couldn't help cause he was doing the bag(the dept mail). Right a uniformed NYPD in a marked car. The bad guy called me the day after I testified and described what he was going to do to my wife and kids while he made me watch. It didn't worry me then cause I wasn't married. But sure as heck, a coupleof years down the road he called me to congragulate me on the wedding. Several other calls over time what car she was driving or what she wore…. Told the cops and the DA and nobody cared. "Call us when you see him." I bought my first handgun. -
Push To Include Big Bore Airguns For Big Game In New York?
cityboy replied to 13BVET's topic in General Hunting
I'm pretty sure airguns are not considered a firearm in NYS. Also you are not allowed to use a .22 for a coup de grace on a down big game animal in NYS. Some convicted of "serious" misdemenors cannot possess rifles and shotguns in NYS but can get pistol permits. -
my wife had one run into her van on 86 one night near the casino. said it looked like a big black wheelbarrow coming at her
