  1. I see your situation better now. Just throwing an idea out. What about a French Drain from the NW corner of the coop running to the SW? Could that eliminate half your problem now for much less cost?

    A/C

I used mine a few times over the past week.
  3. Talking cooking game with a very old neighbor a long time ago. She said for the tough cuts use a covered cast iron pan with the lowest heat you can arrange, cook for 24 hours. Worked well for pheasant legs. Use some wine.
  4. Did you get an estimate to repair/expand the leach field? No real problems with mine except 30 years old. Figured it was time, especially because we've made the last college tuition payment on the youngest child. Cost me 3 grand for a local contractor to put in a new field. Done in a day. Put on a new roof a few months later. No leaks, just 30 years old.
  5. I hear target cadence shooting in the woods around me quite often, not just on weekends; not rapid fire. Heck I contribute to the sport myself. I have one or two spots on my hunting club's property where I put a couple of sporting clays on a pile of wood chips as targets. I'll shoot at the end of my 2-3 mile hike, maybe 50 rounds 1-2 times a week. I have spots for doing pushups and watering the dog also. From what I hear around me I think some guys have dedicated ranges on their property. Good for them!
  6. I bought a brand new recently made Marlin 336 30-30 4 months ago. I looked it over pretty closely before I put my money down. I couldn't find anything wrong with it. It's dead nuts accurate like my 336 in 35 Rem that I've had for 25 years.
  7. When the weather gets cooler I usually put an old army blanket in my pack just in case. It doesn't take up much room and in a pinch it's worth it's weight in gold.
  8. A guy I hunted with for a while used an M-1 carbine all the time. It was the only gun he owned, and he always got a deer. I never saw him load anything but ball. He had to track a few, not far. There was never a deer he did not recover. He was a one shot kill hunter. He was also my platoon sergeant in the reserves. He taught me a lot about the woods, taught me a lot about hunting.
  9. We had a lot of apples last year. The cold snap after the warm snap killed this years crop. We have blueberries, but not as many as years past.
  10. Crown Heights is in Brooklyn. Why are people talking about Manhattan? Any urban living is different than the suburbs or rural experience. You can't be nonchalant when going about town. Most people in NYC are good people, but if you make yourself out to be a mark .. well you'll get taken advantage of. I grew up in downtown Manhattan and worked all over the city. If you are from out of town and moving in, learn how to cross the street and learn how to walk on the sidewalk. Don't walk close to buildings, things do fall out of windows or off buildings.
  11. Grilled boneless chicken breast, roasted asparagus, mixed salad
  12. over the counter pain meds can also raise your blood pressure. dessert and booze increase blood sugar
  13. 9mm usually costs a lot less than .380
  14. "J" frame 442 or 642. I feel it hides and rides better than my shield, not that the shield does it badly.
  15. used to find more. 2 yrs. ago march snowstorm with heavy wind at least a foot and a half of snow, lots of trees blown over... found a pit in the snow 6 ft across covered in blood and hair and deer bones. whatever got that deer just hunkered down for the two day storm and just ate.
  16. Boneless sirloin grilled over charcoal, grilled asparagus, salad with carrots and radishes, two short jameson w/ splash of water

    Coffee

8 o'clock coffee columbian peaks grind it fine at any supermarket
  18. Had a shoulder surgeon tell me most guys over 50 have a couple of partially torn rotator muscles, wouldn't try to surgically fix them. Even if one rotator was completely torn he wouldn't try to fix it in a guy over 50, odds are it would just tear again. Exercise with rubber bands and light weights like a pitcher would. Shoulder injuries are among the most painful and difficult to live with. Typically guys can only get some sleep in their easy chair. On an upbeat note an old timer I know told me his surgeon said bow shooting was about the best thing for a bad shoulder. I'm going to approach an older buddy whose career was athletic trainer about putting out a manual for how to work out as we age. I've been learning through the years as I get older I have to exercise differently from when I was young. My workouts are mostly now in the pool or the gym so I can get one or two days a week in the woods.
  19. I like the older army surplus aluminum snowshoes with the beavertail. I use bindings I found online, the surplus ones are very frustrating. These snowshoes don't make noise like the hollow aluminum frame ones, or the ones that have the stretched fabric instead of shellacked leather weave. Not near as quiet as wooden and leather snowshoes, but they don't break crossing over rock walls and crossing plowed roads. I also use a pair of short fat cross-country skis that have a "skin" on the bottom. They glide pretty good and you can use your regular winter hunting boot, the bindings are kind of like snowboard bindings but have a free heel.
  20. Before the children all went off to college they would eat 3 deer a year.
  21. I have 2 in 30.06. A beautiful old one, blued, wood stock and engraved receiver that I picked up used about 20 years ago. The new one has the bolt lever, black plastic stock and a flatblack finish. It was on the rack at Gander Mountain with a small scratch on the barrel. Every few weeks I would point out the damage to one of the clerks and mention a deeply discounted price to take it off their hands. One day they took the bait and it was mine. Strange they use different magazines. Both are very accurate, balance nicely when carrying, come up easily and solid to a spot weld to the cheek and shoulder. I have a 3x9 scope on the new one and I definitely use that one more than the other.
  22. Got medavaced off my Coast Guard ship via a USCG helicopter. don't remember a single thing because just before they hoisted me in the stokes (to rough to land) our medic ran up gave me a shot off something and said"enjoy the ride!" Remember coming to briefly in the Naval Hospital in Puerto Rico with a very angry Doctor yelling "IF THIS SAILOR LOSES HIS LEG SOMEBODIES GOING TO JAIL!" Woke up a couple of days later getting wheeled to the beach in an enourmous wooden wheel chair.
  23. I have arthritis (osteo) in my knees and lower back. I've tried lots of things over the years, and this may sound crazy, but what worked for me for a while was raw milk. My supplier got shut down , but I found a new one today and will pick up my first gallon from this new source tomorrow.
  24. Great pictures! Nice looking animals.
