    I remember

I remember when crossing the road out front we used to stare at any car that happened to go by because chances are it was somebody we knew. Now it seems that that same road is just a constant stream of cars. And when the fall leaves are in full color, you may not be able to get across the road at all without a good long wait. I remember climbing half way up the huge hill in the dark on opening day and looking down on the highway below, seeing the continuous long line of headlights that looked like a huge snake coming down the valley. Now opening day traffic doesn't look much heavier that normal work-day traffic. I remember back in the early 60's, it was kind of unusual to ever see a bowhunter in the woods on state land. It almost seemed like a wilderness hunt (35 miles outside of Rochester). Quite different today. I remember when we didn't have to lock the door to the house. I remember when most of our neighbors were small family farmers. Those lands are being covered up with houses now.
  2. Yes we can guess, but soon we will know, one way or another. I know that all through the crossbow arguments, everybody talked about all the old guys who want to hunt during the warmer weather. Well, now in those chosen areas they can. Is that argument really true? Well I guess now we will put it to the test.
  3. Well finally something we agree on. The bow season will indeed morph into whatever technology that we can come up with and there really is no limit on that. Nobody will draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. That is why I believe that with these kinds of attitudes, we will see everything imaginable (including firearms) thrown into our so-called bow season eventually. It is getting harder and harder to justify any need for a special "bow season". Yes indeed, the precedent was set with the compound, and the crossbow will set a whole new round of precedents. Each step leads to the next and nobody has will to say, "Enough!"
  4. Ha-ha-ha-ha.......This Trump Derangement Syndrome will never end. He certainly got under the skin of the socialist wing of the party, to the extent that they can't seem to shake it.....lol. Actually, I can understand their all of their blathering about Trump. The fact is that the only way they can try to coverup the endless parade of screw-ups by poor ol' Sleepy Joe is by non-stop filibustering about an administration that no longer exists. Don't you people realize how pathetic you all sound? My gosh it is time to confess that you voted for Blundering Biden simply because he pulled one over on you. He hid in his basement and everybody treated the election like a popularity contest. And now look what you all did to the country. This is Biden's administration that we are stuck with, not Trump's. Let's see if you all can keep that straight.
  5. Is that what determines whether or not a person is anti-crossbow? I believe that the crossbow is a perfectly acceptable deer hunting implement........In the proper season. I hate to say it, but that was a rather stupid question given the context of the discussion.
  6. My biggest curiosity about a gun season occurring before bow season is the question of will the deer go into their survival mode early because of it. Part of that "survival mode" is nocturnal activity. This is something that I have noted in our area every gun season. The deer take on a completely different attitude after opening day. Will this now impact bow seasons? We'll see.
  7. You have a real happy birthday Eddie. You're one of the few here that's actually older than I am and another long-time member too. I don't celebrate birthdays anymore, but I have to admit that another birthday sure does beat the alternatives......lol.
  8. There is another thing that occurred to me. We have some state land that is heavily used by mountain bikers and hikers. In the past they have ceased their activities when the firearms deer season opened up. They probably will not be aware that the DEC has snuck this early firearms season in. Also, I doubt that any of them will be wearing blaze orange (the law does not require them to if they are not deer hunting.....right?). I suppose as soon as the guns start blazing, they will be fleeing the woods. I imagine that the deer will be taking the hint and go into their survival mode like they do during every regular gun season. They should be completely nocturnal by the time the bow season opens. Can't say for sure..........I guess we will have to wait and see.
  9. I may go out during the early season for as long as I can before the skeeters drain me of blood. No, it would be interesting to check out the activity to see just how badly bow season may be screwed up. I also want to see how the regular opening day is impacted by this new season opener. I think it may be interesting. I know that other years, once opening weekend is finished, things go pretty silent. This early season may dull the usual participation that we normally see on the regular opener, and prove to be contrary to what they are trying to do. I guess we just have to wait and see.
  10. It is amazing how many died-in-the-wool socialists are now heading for the hills and denying all support of Biden. What???.....who me?......Oh no I never even voted for the guy.....Oh no, not me.....Honest. I don't blame you. It has to be terribly humiliating the way everything is turning out for you all. Those people who hated Trump's personality and saw the election as some kind of popularity contest instead of looking at Biden's record an conduct during the campaign have got to be completely embarrassed.
  11. Who ever said I was anti-crossbow. I don't believe I have ever said anything that anyone could call anti-crossbow. I do have opinions on proper bow seasons and safe-guarding the intent of that season without cramming every weapon that nobody knows what else to do with into that season. I was unaware that members here were assigned certain forums that they can use and certain ones that we cannot use. Is someone making up new rules now?
  12. It is good not to become so focused on one thing that you miss out on all else. As an old fart, I can tell you a bit about how fast time flies by, and how so much of life gets lost zeroing all of your attention on just one thing. I see your attitude as being very flexible and able to grab onto the important aspects of life before they slip away forever. That is something that we don't all have the foresight to do as the years quickly tick away.
  13. Why would anyone fear the "Trump vaccine"?
  14. I haven't had a vacation day for 17 years ever since I retired. Every day is a vacation day......lol. That's the good news. The problem now is that the older I get, the more that "killer hill" behind the house takes out of me....ha-ha-ha. It's too bad we can't retire first while we're in prime condition and then start working as we get old. I guess it really can't work that way.
  15. You don't even understand that no one is really arguing about whether or not we should have been pulling out of Afghanistan. Let me see if I can clarify the controversy for you. It is all about the backwards way this stumbling, bumbling simpleton has gone about it. I hope this reply is not too long for your reading capabilities.
  16. Sorry that the logic of my posts are too much of a challenge for your reading skills. I was not aware that you were literacy challenged. It is a shame that discussion of current events can't be reduced down to your level of reading. That is probably why you are completely unaware of Biden's plummeting poll numbers. Too many words for you to comprehend in those articles too.
  17. Don't worry too much about the afghan people who assisted us. We'll be doing good to even get our own people out of there. In fact, even that doesn't look too hopeful anymore. The time to remove Sleepy Joe and his giggling Vice-President was back during the election. We had a pile of voters who thought that the presidential election was a popularity contest and voted for a candidate that hid in the basement for fear his senility would become an issue. Well today it IS an issue and a deadly one at that. He has caused international damage that will take decades to undo. Who would have guessed that ignorant voters and our own communist Pravda could create so much havoc and internal strife. All I can say is what I saw on a lawn sign: "Don't blame me.....I voted for Trump".
  18. And it kind of livens up these hunting forums too......LOL.

    I remember

I remember when there was so many hunters that you could track the path of the deer on the far hill just by listening to the path of shooting. I got one dandy buck just by listening to the direction all the shooting was going, and positioning myself in an escape route that I knew the deer used. Now, after 9:00 or 10:00 am, the shooting is so sparse that you would think the season was over.
  20. Spoken like a true Biden Democrat.....As if that is the only option. Funny you have no problem with importing 1/2 of Central America. Now-a-days, you are the only one that I hear supporting the idiot that you people voted in. He is doing a splendid job of destroying the country, which may actually be the goal of all you libs. But take a look at those polls you mentioned and try not to get too lonely. Even the majority of libs are starting to turn of stumbling Joe and his laughing hyena of a vice president. I'm thinking the only thing that is saving the guy from impeachment is the realization of who would take over if he went. Well now we have dead marines and stranded Americans who the Taliban will be using as bargaining chips for even more of our treasure (good job Joe). And yet even with the Biden socialist idea of paying people not to work, the border debacle and the socialist spending agenda, and the inflation, and the loss of our energy independence, and the botched foreign policy decisions and now the screwed up withdrawal from Afghanistan, and "Sleepy-Joe who spent the whole campaign hiding in his basement for fear people might figure out his senility, there still is 20-something percent of his dedicated loyal followers that can't see him doing any wrong. What the hell is the matter with you people? The fact is that it is not Biden's fault. It is the fault of all the people who voted for him without ever looking at what he is. You people and your sycophant mainstream media have become our biggest threat to our country. The creeping socialists. It became a very scary world in one election cycle and there are so many people who either don't see it or don't care. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be so blunt, but it sure does seem as though there needs to be some straight talk around here.

    I remember

I remember when I was about 12 years old and built a pretty nice long bow out of a hickory stave, And with some willow arrows, went up in the hay loft of the barn and killed two pigeons, cleaned them and ate them. That was my first bow hunt..... I remember my first deer hunt with a gun when a high school buddy and I camped out up on the hill in a lean-to for a week. I missed my first deer that week.
  22. My goals now are pretty modest. They amount to just being able to place one foot in front of the other and climb that "killer hill" out behind the house .......lol. I won't be worrying about counting points or scores or anything like that. I just want to keep a strong bow arm and participate and, add another year of hunting to the others. Keep 'em coming!

    I remember

I love these reminiscing threads. It is so great to enjoy the times that so many of us experienced growing up. It does help understand attitudes and where people are coming from with their opinions.
  24. All this makes you wonder why we have ANY "special" seasons" at all? Why not just have "Deer Season", and use any weapon you want? Isn't that what crossbow hunters really want anyway? Some of you crossbow proponents must kind of have that feeling. Why do you want to exclude guns from a certain part of the deer season. Isn't that a bit of an elitist and exclusionary attitude and perhaps showing a bit of selfishness? Let's really open up bow season and stop hogging up the woods for the elitist bow and crossbow hunters. I know a lot of rifle hunters that would love to have that nice warm part of the year to use their guns on deer. Of course I say all this with tongue-cheek, but when you listen to the arguments for demanding full inclusion of crossbows, that thought of an "any-weapon" deer season has to cross your mind.
