  1. I like the idea of using a dummy camera, with a real camera perched and angled in a tree above it. That would give you some idea of who might do it. Or, if you know where they are coming in from (a drive/parking spot) set up a camera that can get their vehicle/LP. https://www.outdoorlife.com/hacks-to-keep-your-trail-cams-from-getting-stolen/
  2. I would be the guy who forgot it was there and nail myself
  3. I got my broadheads on and zeroed in last weekend. The only thing I haven't had time to (not like it's a big deal at all ) is give my new hunting ground a good scout. I kind of got the lay of things while squirrel hunting a few weeks ago, and have an idea of where I'm going to start. I think I'll try to get out on and afternoon this weekend, get in a tree and see what I can see. I'm very much looking forward to it!
  4. That is quite the haul! Several years back I worked on the University of Illinois hog farm. We were having a problem with coyotes coming near the farrowing barns, and since hunting wasn't allowed on university property, they hired an outfit to come in and trap them. They caught several, but one day they called us up to the gate before they left to show us this guy. The coyotes they "euthanized" but since badgers are protected, they had to relocate this one. He just looked like he was trying to figure out a way to take your face off...
  5. Re-reading these classic stories right now.
  6. Heck yeah, another Dresden fan! This is coming up soon for me!
  7. Maybe do a scavenger hunt check list of things he will see and can look for. That will help keep him observant and interested.
  8. Snacks, games, and short sits. Don't push them too hard, especially at 4. 45 minutes to an hour of sitting is plenty long enough. I would focus more on the positive experience than the hunt. As moog said, getting him out to walk around and look around the woods is just as important as taking a deer. No deer but a good time will hook him better than being bored and maybe getting a deer.
  9. Yes, decided to give it another shot, and am going to avoid the bottom of the forum, it gets me into trouble. I've got a lot of questions as I get ready for hunting season, and I figured there is no better source of information than here.
  10. Thanks! Simply floured, fried and with gravy (hands down the best part).
  11. I'm soon getting my first muzzleloader, a TC New Englander with both the 50 cal. and 12 ga barrel. I went through our 4-H course last winter, but need a lot of practice before I feel comfortable hunting with it. Any suggestions for a new muzzleloader hunter? I will say, I've got a few volunteers who have great experience with ML's, so I'm not stepping blindly into this new arena
  12. Put them on CL, eBay or Facebook Marketplace and you'll find someone who is willing to pay something for them. Not anything I would collect thought.
  13. Hi Everyone, Back again, and giving it one more shot. I know, it's annoying. Last time around I did exactly what I told myself I wouldn't and went down into the mud. Going to do my best to keep to the hunting/guns/outdoor section. It's getting close to hunting season, and I have a ton of questions, and quite honestly am looking to your knowledge of NY hunting and laws. I hope to stick around this time, and hopefully no one holds any hard feelings about past discussions that took place at the bottom of the forum. Feel free to give me a hard time, I think I've earned it. I will give one quick update on my hunting, as a few weeks ago I had my first hunt in NYS. Took my 10/22 (formerly my Dad's old 10/22) out and got a mess of squirrels. Cooked them up the next day on my camp stove (my wife wouldn't let me cook them in the house) and my daughter had her first taste of wild game
