  1. I have a better thing to contemplate. Imagine if the native population hadn't been ravaged by disease (estimates are anywhere from 70-85% population decrease) during the decade or so leading up to the start of European colonization. The Europeans would have had a much harder time "settling" if the bulk of the land was occupied instead of looking like abandoned farm land.
  2. Well, I for one, am not taking the bait. Can I get some troll spray over here?
  3. FYI: When I write something, and CHC and WNY "like" it, the argument is pretty much over. We win.
  4. BTW, the main point of this thread was not defending people standing over steaming deer at 8PM. It was carrying a loaded rifle out of the woods after hours. I never unload my gun until I'm back at my truck. I've had a couple of close encounters with bears, and if a coyote decided to cross my path and I had a safe shot, I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity. No one here is condoning shooting deer outside of legal hunting times.
  5. This thread has been amusing the hell out of me. I can't believe so many of you "dead red" hunters are so willing to roll over and not stand up for personal liberties and rights when it comes to an ECON officer. Remember, if you follow the chain of command up far enough, that ECON officer works for OBAMA! Maybe that will inspire you.
  6. Disclaimer: People who live in NYC call everywhere north of Westchester, "Upstate". Friday: 9:00AM: Get to work 11:00: Convince my boss to give me Saturday off (by volunteering to work 8AM-9PM Sunday) 9:00PM: Leave work 10:00: Get home 10-11:30: Pack the truck, shower, spend a few minutes with my family, kiss everyone goodbye. 11:30: Leave for Monticello (125 miles) 1:30AM: Arrive, decide to catch a couple of hours of sleep. 1:31: Zzzzzzzz Saturday: 4:00AM: Alarm goes off - So not happening. Snooze button. 4:10: SHUT UP YOU STUPID PHONE 5:45: CRAP, OVERSLEPT! 6:30: Ate, dressed, hydrated, slowly hiking in to find a tree for my climber... 7:30: Finally up and settled, too damn late. 9:30: Young spike crosses my stand. Cute little guy, would have earned a pass even if this wasn't AR. 11:30: Get up to put on my sweatshirt and a Coyote decides to cruise by my stand. Struggle to get my bow ready in time....aim...he stops on his own at 21 yards, broadside.... AND I SEND THE DAMN ARROW OVER HIS BACK, giving him a little hair cut. Next hour: Kicking myself in the ass for blowing my first chance to take a coyote with a bow. 4:30PM: 3 good size does pass at 55 yards. I grunt to try to draw them in, but they want no part of me. 6:00: Start heading down the tree. 6:40: Packed and changed, start heading home (125 miles). 9:30: Home. 9:30-11:30: Watched a movie with my sons and sent them to bed. 11:31: Zzzzzzz Sunday: 6:30-7:00AM: Up, showered, heading to work. 8:00AM-9:00PM: Work - Every second so far, still seeing that arrow graze over the damn coyote and thinking about how I can fit another day of hunting into my crazy schedule. But, as it has been pointed out more than once by people here, I shouldn't consider myself a hunter, because I'm a Liberal.
  7. Agree. Its pretty clear cut too, I'm not sure why you feel differently, Bubba. Its the "shooting a deer" part that makes it illegal, not carrying around a loaded weapon.
  8. Also, if you have a smart phone: Primos makes a little app to demo their calls. It has predator calls on it. So yeah, I always have my pred calls on me. Unless the DEC officer hears the shot before or after legal hours, s/he really shouldn't be able to fine you.
  9. I'm pretty sure, in this country of ours, at least, you have to prove guilt, not innocence. I'm surprised I'd have to remind you of that, Bubba.
  10. Worse comes to worse, I just took a glance at 3G on the DEC maps and there is some public land you could try out. Check out Great Swamp WMA or Cranberry Mountain WMA if you have no better options.
  11. Public outdoor ranges, yeah, LI is the way to go unless you live in the Bronx. Though they closed down the closest range to the city, so you'll be driving a good 1.5 hours to get to one. There are some private outdoor ranges on Staten Island, but you need to be a member of a gun club.
  12. Hey, we have at least 1 coyote on SI, there is still hope.
  13. I do not believe so, I think they are strictly carrion eaters.
  14. We even have them in Staten Island. I've seen them eating road kill along 440, and seen them flying over the former-landfill-soon-to-be-biggest-park-in-the-city. Pretty cool birds with massive wingspans.
  15. I know, I know. I was actually slowly trying to back out when that guy brought up the whole UN crap again. It aggravated me enough that I had to look into the specifics of it because I knew the claims weren't true. I deal with politics and electoral procedure all day long. I really need to avoid this section and stick to the hunting forums. This place is supposed to relax me and lower my blood pressure when I visit, not raise it.
  16. Wow...just looking at that makes me cringe. I'm actually hoping that's photo-shopped because I can't see that thin skin there being able to support the full body weight of that poor deer, unless he can touch the ground with his front legs.
  17. Bubba, if that is what you want to base your vote on, that is your right and I'm not trying to change your mind. If all I was looking at was gun control, I would vote for Romney too. For me, this election goes way beyond that. This thread was never about me trying to convince people that Obama was more pro-gun than Romney. That would be ridiculous. I can't, however, stand by and let people spread lies that try to manipulate voters into thinking something that just isn't true.
  18. I realize this will fall on a lot of deaf ears, but this simply isn't how our government works. The Founding Fathers were a damn smart bunch of guys, one man, even the POTUS, isn't making radical changes to the Constitution, no matter how he feels on the subject.
  19. LOL, that sounds like one hell of a plan, but I'd want to invite Felonious_Monk too. True Libertarians are a rare breed.
  20. Hey now, be careful about those predictions that can bite you in the ass. New York doesn't matter anyway, that was decided long ago. If you want to be catered to, move to Ohio, PA or Florida.
  21. CHC: I'm not disagreeing with you that in Obama's perfect world there would be more gun control. If you believe he can actually get something through Congress, that is your prerogative. I don't think he has a chance in hell of pushing through stricter gun legislation. What I can't stand are fanatics spouting lies and postulations about what the President will do if OMFG he gets reelected!!1??! It is just silly. Gun Control is a non-issue that the radical right wants to scare people into thinking is a prime issue. I'm not basing my vote this election on the gun control issue. I firmly believe its a moot point. I don't think either candidate will make any significant changes to existing gun control laws in the next 4 years. I'm voting for Obama because Romney scares the shit out of me on several other issues that I feel strongly about.
  22. I'm saying that he is an urban democrat, so he isn't exactly the NRA poster boy. I'm also saying that the 2nd Amendment isn't going anywhere. Anyone who says different is fear-mongering. Its survived every other Democratic POTUS and it will survive Obama. While President, Obama has done nothing to push for all the restrictions most of these websites claim he will do if he is reelected. Romney is no NRA poster boy either. He supported the Assault Weapons ban and the Brady Bill (5 day wait). He raised the fees on Mass gun owners 400% while in office. In 1994, he stated, "I don't line up with the NRA" on gun control" when running against Ted Kennedy. When running for Governor in 2002, he vowed not to weaken Mass' strict gun control laws. And his "Lifelong devotion to hunting" was proven to mean he went twice, to kill rabbits and "small varmints". Granted, he isn't going after guns at all since its now part of his voter base, but neither is Obama.
  23. I know quite a few liberal hunters, maybe you need to get out more? I'm glad I've done my part to broaden your narrow horizon. Don't worry, I didn't tell you anything about what I "think", I stated facts. I know this might seem like a strange way to prove a point, but it does indeed work for some people (though it seems maybe not so much so on the websites you visited during your scholarly BING search). Worst President ever? That's your opinion and you're entitled to that. I'll choose to disagree. I'm also not trying to change your mind about who to vote for, I'm calling you out for retelling lies and being a sheep to fear-mongering websites. I simply provide facts, if you choose to ignore them, that is your right. I do hug trees, why thank you. Just two weekends go when I was up in my climber, I had to hug the tree to clip my seat into place. You have a nice life too!
  24. NY State Penal Law, Section 265. Subsections 3 and 14 are relevant. From section 3 (definitions), "Firearm does not include an antique firearm." From section 14, " "Antique firearm" means: Any unloaded muzzle loading pistol or revolver with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system, or a pistol or revolver which uses fixed cartridges which are no longer available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade." As long as its unloaded, its not a firearm and therefore does not need to be registered within NYC. EDIT: I know that section specifically states pistols, I'm looking up to see if it states longarms specifically somewhere else or its just extrapolated from the pistol law. I do know for a fact though, that MZs do not need to be registered as long as they are never loaded within the city. However, as I mentioned, the powder is illegal if its not registered. Its mainly so that people who collect old guns don't have to register them.
  25. Ok, now to get started: 1) Congress has to ratify all treaties. It would need two-thirds of the Sentate to vote to pass it. Good luck there. 2) The content of the treaty hasn't even been finalized. The first draft was written in July, but the treaty was suspended indefinitely when the Obama administration (as well as some other countries) declined to support it. 3) The Arms Trade Treaty has nothing to do with the restricting of legal sale or ownership of guns within the US. The focus of the UN Arms Trade Treaty is to combat illegal international trade of arms through trade regulation. The current draft states that the treaty specifically "reaffirms the sovereign right and responsibility of any State to regulate and control transfers of conventional arms that take place exclusively within its territory". 4) The POTUS can not ban weapons through the signing of international treaties with foreign nations. Reid vs Covert establishes the Constitution supersedes international treaties, even those ratified by the Senate. Yeah, I think that just about covers it. As for calling myself a hunter: hunt·er/ˈhən(t)ər/ Noun: A person or animal that hunts: "a deer hunter". A person searching for something: "a bargain hunter". Yeah, that sounds about right. Sorry if I don't base my entire political views on one issue. Enjoy your tunnel vision.
