Either stand with us or get out of the way

You do know the DC sniper used a Bushmaster XM-15 .223, right? Anyway, I'm going to gladly step out of your way, since I'm a firm believer in banning high capacity magazines. Although, since we live in NY, they are already banned here (barring anything grandfathered in). Out of curiosity though, how many criminal vs civilian AR-15 battles have you read about recently? ever? -
I'm thinking about purchasing one in .223 and looking for anyone with first-hand knowledge.

Unbelievable... but not really.

I know, but it still had nothing to do with the fact that I was trying to point out that the information in the article has always been available to the public and is not protected. Other subjects that are or are not available with a FOIL request just detracts from this particular subject. Again, I wasn't debating the merits of the article and the map, I was just educating people that the information has always been available. I personally think it was a publicity piece that was published knowing full well it would incite anger in many people, and thus increase web traffic for their site. -

I'm not debating the fact that this information is available is good or bad . I'm saying it has always been available and this is nothing new. Some of the people who posted on this thread clearly did not know that. Your last post has nothing to do with anything relevant to the topic. -

Kick people out who disagree with your views, that's what America was founded on after all! Wait...wha?? -
2 dead, 1 wounded...previous thread about it on the board. What the hell is wrong with some people?

And this is interesting, its actually MORE private now than it use to be. Once again, quoting from the article: Access to information provided on pistol-license applications — such as the permit type, models of guns purchased and number of weapons owned — changed in 1994 when the state Legislature rewrote sections of the penal law covering licensure. Before the amendment, the law said “the application for any license, if granted, shall be a public record.” The law now reads “the name and address of any person to whom an application for any license has been granted shall be a public record.” Many counties have interpreted that to mean any information beyond names and addresses is barred from public release. -

From the actual article: Anyone can find out the names and addresses of handgun owners in any county with a simple Freedom of Information Law request, and the state’s top public records expert told The Journal News last week that he thinks the law does not bar the release of other details. But officials in county clerk’s offices in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam maintain the public does not have a right to see such things as the specific permits an individual has been issued, the types of handguns a person possesses or the number of guns he or she owns — whether one or a dozen. Law Enforcement doesn't have the same kind of permit. Also, a private organization made that map, you'd have to ask them why they excluded some addresses, if they did. -

None of this is new. You can get any of that information with FOIL request. Its not private and never has been. Do you really not know how much information about you is public? http://www.oms.nysed.gov/foil/ -
about sensible reform. I'm not usually a big Schumer fan, but he seems to be fairly level headed on the subject. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/charles-schumer-after-newtown-pursue-a-middle-ground-on-gun-limits/2012/12/19/69e36a98-4964-11e2-ad54-580638ede391_story.html

Just a little venting...

You are completely right, I want some people to not be able to exercise their 2nd amendment right. Of course, that list of people includes felons, drug addicts, mentally unstable individuals, and people who have no idea how to use a gun properly. I love how people think that owning a gun or two with 30 round magazines is going to protect you if the "government" comes a-knocking. Didn't work out so well for the Branch Davidians. (Google, you'll get it). -

Doc, I stayed away from this post on purpose because I wanted to see where it would go on its own. I never once claimed to have all the answers. Why would I take the time to post actual ideas when most of the active posters would respond as eloquently as our good friend Grouse? Lets dissect my post and see what we can extrapolate from it. Gun registration and no more high capacity magazines/drums. Though as I said later on, I want a clear definition of what "high capacity" is. Personally, I think NYS 10 round limit if a pretty good compromise, although if it went to 5, like NYC has, I really can't say it would bother me. This loophole needs to be closed. Self explanatory? On top of that, I like Steve's idea of a Federal Gun Card that takes a little more than a 10 minute check to acquire. I'm for including some sort of mental health check before a person can drive into their local Walmart and walk out with a firearm and a couple boxes of ammo. How about a written test on gun safety that must be passed? Maybe even throw in a drug test? For a pistol CC, there should be all of the above, plus a skill test that needs to be renewed. I'm for a forced delay (10, 15, 30 days?) between gun purchases. I think it should be mandatory to own a gun safe/locker if you own firearms, to cut down on theft. Reread the above before listing all the scenarios you can think of where none of this will help. It will save someone else the trouble of thinking up just as many scenarios where it would. I wrote my original post because despite my best efforts, I've been bombarded with images and stories of the Newtown tragedy and I used this forum as an outlet. Believe me, I wasn't looking to convert anyone. I thought my post was fairly even-keeled, though I guess the center is still way off to the left of the average poster in these parts. -

Just let that one go. I did. When someone starts off a post with a seemingly post-apocalyptic scenario, its just going to detract from any useful conversation. -
As many of you know, I am one of the more liberal members of this site. I think our country needs stricter gun laws. That is not to say I want law abiding citizens to lose the right to bear arms. I'm an avid hunter. My sons just turned 12 and I can not wait to be able to take them out this spring for their first turkeys. I live in NYC, where gun registration and 5 round max magazines are already the norm, and I'm OK with that. I think private sales at gun shows with no background checks are ridiculous. I believe fully automatic weapons should not be in the hands of private citizens. I don't think a fifty round drum is a necessity to have fun at the gun range. I could list more examples, but I think that is enough to give you an idea of where I stand. That being said, I also hate people who turn a national tragedy into disaster-porn, and use it to push an agenda. I despise articles that blindly condemn firearms, written by people who have absolutely no idea about how a gun works. Every time I see current buzz words like, "military-style", "high-capacity" or the ever popular "assault weapon" without any quantifying guidelines about the definition of such words, I cringe. Seriously, how is one supposed to interpret what a "military-style" weapon is? Last time I checked the M24 was still used by the Army. Does that make my Remington 700 "military-style"? Where is the line that separates "high-capacity" from a normal magazine? More than five? Ten? Twenty? I won't even comment on everything that gets called an "assault weapon" these days, it would take too long. I believe, as a nation, our gun laws are too relaxed. I believe there are measures that can be put into place which would help prevent tragedies like the ones that happened in Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek and Newtown. If you are of mind set that any restrictions are evil and against our rights as citizens, you are a dinosaur and useless to this discussion. Equally useless is the other side of the spectrum. If you tell me "Weapon Free Zones" are the answer, I have two words for you, "Soft Targets". Banning responsible, law abiding citizens access to firearms should never, and will never, happen. Both sides need to come together and work towards making our country safer. I hope that our elected officials can focus more on common sense, and less on political posturing. No law can be passed that will completely eliminate the possibility of another catastrophe like this from happening. However, I do feel that changes can be made to lessen the likelihood. Our country is in mourning. Again. I wish that all of our representatives have the wisdom and the desire to help us heal. Edit: Fixed a typo.

So, Dick's isn't allowed freedom of choice, but if anyone impedes your choices in the slightest way, they are evil? Gotcha.
