  1. I ended up building a bucket stove . The chimney pipe stores in the pail . It can be burnt as a tent stove or without the lid upright as a camp fire . we have used it for a couple seasons . And it is now part of our big woods northern zone cache .
  2. A lot has settled all ready .Milford, roseboom , got about 12” last weekend
  3. Daveboone we are paddling south branch moose river .
  4. We are about a week out from opening day . Wondering what everyone is doing ? Who is sleeping in the woods ? Who is headed out for the week? . We are headed back to the moose river to paddle in and hunt .
  5. The dynamics of hunting within the blue line are complicated at times. The wild blueberries have done well in the southern Adirondacks this year from what I have seen so far . We will be headed up in 2 weeks to drop gear caches for early muzz and hang a couple cameras. Stand sitting is tough up there . Still hunting edges of soft and hardwoods has been productive for us . The more ground you cover the better your chances of finding ground to return to . We hunt public land only up north .
  6. Powely piseco area is 5j . And Ferris lake wilderness area . Just above little falls . You can access through Stratford . Lots of free camping sites . It’s all boots on the ground hunting. Pack a lunch .
  7. We live over the line in otsego county. I have been a builder in otsego and chenango for 30+ years . The chenango county and local town building /fire code offices are easy to work with for permitting . If you are making improvements requiring zoning approval they are easy to work with also. We have a good hunting and fishing community around here. Many rural residents in chenango and otsego counties are struggling to keep heads above water. As you ride through our counties you definitely see it . There’s is good opportunity in the area . hopefully with decent people transplanting themselves here we will be re-building a better rural ny. Good luck
  8. I’m going to build a couple new box and a couple pot calls with my son and then report back lol .
  9. With the breaks in weather and sunshine, I’ve been seeing more birds in my fields and hitting up the scrub crab apple trees. going to get started on making some new calls this month .looking forward to may .
  10. My father hunted with a bear recurve like that when I was a kid . This brings back memories of the my dad . I still have that recurve saved with some of his gear from back in the day .Thanks for sharing
  11. Packed and headed to the big woods. Gonna be a long day , maybe 2 sandwiches today.
  12. Pentax 8-16 x 21 adjustable zoom under $100 on sale Very nice size and clear pict think it’s called the UP series 5 years and no issues.
  13. Coyotes aren’t very effective against deer unless it’s a fawn or they are running them down in the snow . . Years ago when I was a predator caller we would see deer fox and coyotes all in the same field at the same time in the evening on the spotlight . Deer will stomp the crap out of coyotes and domestic dogs . The same way that a donkey does if left in the field to protect your live stock . Couple feet of snow on the ground and the coyotes will have an advantage if hunting in pac .
  14. Pre rut and post rut buck bedding is definitely different. Post rut I look for thicker cover close to food fringe areas . Try to catch him traveling to and from eats . There is a lot of corn field in my area that the farmers are harvesting now . That first 100-150 yards of crippling brush cover off the edge of theses fields is a favorite area of mine with the muzzleloader.
  15. I see a lot of open area bedding under cover of darkness . more brushy bedding during daylight .
  16. Have you considered making 3-4 mock scrapes down along the edge of that farm road 40-50 yards apart . . . Maybe some doe in heat attractant around a mock beding spot off the road 15-20 yards in the brush . Let the area steep for a day or two in sent , then Pack a lunch and sit . There has to be deer close by maybe you can get them there via their noses . You get one buck to slow down there he may stay close for a couple days .weather is changing Thursday maybe you will seal the deal fri-sun
  17. I would stay on the edges of the high elevations 16 to 1700 feet hard to tell from your map whether you’re dealing with hardwood benches or soft. We see a lot of activity from dawn till 830 9 o’clock in the morning . patriarch bucks heading to those elevations their highest points of view to relax for a few hours until dusk . The best is when they push a doe all the way up to that high ground and try to court and tend her on that Highground hideout. We’ve had some snow here in Otsego? County and schoharie county the deer are heading to the ferns to fill their diet in the highest hardwoods .
  18. Good luck We will be wandering the woods for muzz seasons week all so. Be safe
  19. 2 week count down . Final prep and pack for northern zone . These next 2 weekends will be busy . Weather is cooling so the excitement is building. Anyone heading out for bow today I wish the best of luck to you. Some waterproofing to do this weekend wipe a few pair boots down. Figure out the deer cart situation and how that’s going to break down and load in the boat this year . Then there will be another few things that will come up I’m sure. You never know what you forgot until you get there . I almost forgot I have to put a few loads through the smoke pole make sure that still shooting straight . I had ordered some stuff through midway hopefully that will arrive this weekend also . Nothing too excited in that order just a couple New York State compliant orange hats .
  20. Times have changed haven’t They. Used to hang them in the rear cab window and never worried about them .
  21. Couple pictures from paddling into deer camp this weekend. Water was a little low on some spots. We’re about 2 miles in on the river two sections about 100 yards each i needed to get out walking tagline the boats . Just an amazing Sunday on the water . Dropping supplies and checking what is for the remainder of the blueberry crop . There isn’t an apple tree to be found up there . We’re really chasing beach nuts blueberries and other soft browse
  22. 30.06 is a good cartridge. Though I don’t hunt with that caliber. I know many of fellow hunters a field use it . Sounds like you really have yourself a nice gun, losing that much weight off the rifle i is amazing . Should lighten you up a little bit at least give you the ability of a few more miles . I’m headed back in tomorrow to cut some extra firewood . If the water level is good there on the south branch hopefully I’ll be able to paddle it and not have to tagline everything and wade it.good luck be safe .
