You know one thing that occured to me last night while out scouting around the woods? I need more treestands now lol. Since I hunt northern and southern bow and the seasons are on top of each other I cant move some of my northern stands to southern tier when I start bowhunting there. Dang it I have to buy more stands. Bummer.

So he can feel good about him self agreeing with his own post through another name. Or maybe so it makes it look like he is not the only idiot with nothing good to add too any topic. I wont tell how I personally feel about the guy but most can already figure that one out. LOL Welcome Back WNYBuckHunter!

You guys do realize that we been hunting Sept. 27 on last years tag for years and years. Out west they have seasons starting in August. Planning ahead for a potential kill in the earlier season is a good idea. Be prepared to get the deer dresses and cooled off well before you get in the field. Talk to your local butchers if you do not process them yourself. Most around me are open and ready to go. I have always a few bags of ice in the chest freezer when the season starts as well. A body bag for the deer packed with ice if you process yourself with no cooler is a good idea too. We been doing it for a long time and have not lost any deer to spoilage yet. Plan ahead and things will be just fine.

Bill to raise hunting age to 18
wdswtr replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Dont even try to figure that lady out Grow she has no clue what the heck she is talking about let alone anything to do with hunting. -
Thanks sam. My problem was I planted whitetail forage oats that had some winter wheat seed in it. It was a fall planted food plot and the oats did fantastic. The wheat did not grow till the spring. It shot up faster than anything I ever seen grow. End of may the stuff wast probably 4 feet tall. It was not a planned crop. Its all been chopped and gone now anyways. Winter peas, soybeans, sunflower mix was put in last weekend. Thats suprised me how fast it germinated and is growing good already too.

So does running over 2 fawns with a riding lawnmower in 10 inch grass.

Bill to raise hunting age to 18
wdswtr replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Not the first time she has done this. She fought the lowering of hunting ages throughout the whole deal. Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk -
This very well could be the case, but I can only speak on behalf of myself and the people I personally know. The ones including myself that do have children do indeed take their kids out with them. And yes even opening day of gun. Until an accurate poll has been taken of fathers with honesty and accuracy we have no idea if its large or small percentage. I cant answer a question I dont have an answer for. But lets face it the decline in hunters number is showing that there is a lack of interest or involvment. Up to this point there has been little done on a statewide basis of getting youth hunters involved. Yes NYB has done some good in that aspect but its not enough. Unfortunately either parents or kids just lack the desire. Sad from a hunters standpoint. I dont think its a matter of force, I think its an attempt to raise some excitement with the kids. If the kids show a positive response to a youth hunt maybe it will get more parents involved. No one knows the end result unless it happens. I dont think its a hope someone else will take my kids out at all. I think its an attempt on the DEC part to get youths themself involved by making it something special for them. Yes its pathetic in my opinion that we have a generation that needs that special feeling to be part of a great heritage in this state. But if its not adressesd some how or alteast a start to something that changes can be based off of we will continue to see a decline. Another thought of what I see as a potential problem on a mentor aspect is liability. I would have to think the thought of Im am responsible for the neighbors kids and the liability of them getting hurt or worse falls into there hands has to weigh on people decisions as well. The motives behind being pro youth hunt on my part and others I know have zero motivations of redirecting our responsibility and pure enjoyment of being with our children. I would not call taking a kid hunting a burden. If that is the case and intentions of any pro youth hunt people then shame on them. A couple other things come to mid as well. I have read no regualtions on not being able to still bowhunt as an adult during the special youth hunt. If the youth hunt is already been deemed a failure by some it would seem the worry of youths in the woods at the same time as bow hunters, turkey hunters and small game hunters would be pretty minimal. Like it or dislike it the numbers in other states proves it not being a failure. Was the chosen date the most ideal? Probably not, but I already said I would of rather seen a youth bowhunt or a youth gun hunt in proper seasons. I have my reasons and some feedback on why I think that weekend was chosen but I wont get into that one. My pure intentions and reasoning is to get more youths in the woods. If this is a small step in any direction why is it so wrong? The first step can lead to many better changes to recruitment. We have to start somewhere, the numbers show the past no longer works.

You guys are not understanding what I am saying I think. When Skully comes on here and starts saying crap like Im selfish, I want the deer all to me, I dont want my kids in the woods with me, is plain and simple wrong. Those thoughts have not will not and never have gone through my head. Thats is my point. Dont make accusations that are untrue. Pretty simple. You can agree with his stance on no youth hunt and that is perfectly in your right to do so, you agree with him spewing crap about fathers being selfish and dont want to be in the woods with their kids on opening day or any other for that matter is just not right its a bold guess as to there true intentions. You Skully cant speak for my beliefs and my involvment with my kids. You have zero clue on that aspect. So that makes me a "baffoon" because I know your accusations against me are wrong? Hence the reason I said bring a semi intelligent response. I have yet to see one from you other than plain accusations against someone in favor of the youth hunt. This whole thread had a great discussion going and alot of respectful points made until you came in with the troll responses. Anyone and everyone has a right to disagree with me Fasteddie, perfectly acceptable and no it doesnt make them selfish, it brings a new point to the discussion or maybe an old one. Doc has brought up alot of great points, alot of diverse solutions, some I agree with some I dont. It sure doesnt make him selfish for pointing out his ideas and opinions. The thing that really gets me is out of the number of hunters in woods and the number of people saying they are against the youth hunt, versus the numbers that showed up to the public meetings or the amount of feedback DEC received. Why bitch about it after the fact, why did hunters not make their opinions heard if there is such a strong negative feedback as suggested? I dont get it, bitch and banter after instead of voicing when it was asked.

So you guys agree just because we actually like spending time with our kids hunting and they are excited about this that it makes us bad parents and selfish and we are going to rip the gun out of their hands when the big one steps out or we dont want them in the woods ith us when we are hunting? Give me a break. The more I read from some of you I have to wonder what the heck makes you people come to these conclusions unless these are your own personal things you would do or think. I will pass up a chance on ANY deer in ANY season to help a kid get more involved. It makes me sick people even think this way. Sorry but some of us actually love our kids and love spending time with them. Nothing but pure false accusations towards us fathers. Selfish is what is far from our thoughts, and incase you guys didnt read they do go out on opening day, and any other day they ask to come along. As a parent there is a bigger reward in seeing your child be succesful than yourself. It really amazes me how some of you hunters think and this is the problem in a nutshell. Trying to twist your dislike about a youth hunt and turn it into a father being selfish who actually support their kids and hunting activities is a cop out excuse for how you really feel but wont say Im thinking. Why not just say you dont want other peoples kids in the woods during your time in the woods, and that it will mess up your hunt, or they might shoot your deer? See a mentor isnt about me me me its about them them them.
-
Yeah okay you are correct Im the fool! Great post with some great thought put into them, when you are willing to bring atleast a semi intelligent response to the youth hunt discussion I will adress them. Until then, you have fun entertaining yourself.
-
Once again another brilliant post from Skully. NOT It amazes me how you think, you come up with stuff that you are thinking and we in favor of the youth hunt are not. Sounds like to me you are the one with the selfish me thoughts and no one else. If you have any common sense you might want to wear some orange while walking around in the woods during hunting season to begin with dont you think? You amaze me with the things only you can think up. You think it is any different walking around in your full dress camo turkey hunting while small game hunters are in the woods? Oh wait I forgot you probably dont think birdshot or a 22 can hurt or kill you either right? Yeah you are correct us dads are a selfish bunch of a-holes who are going to grab the gun away from our own kids to ruin there day so we can get a deer before they do. My god get real the only one not making any sense is you.
-
Thats funny Doc, Paula maybe I misread what you wrote but it sure does sound like you telling him how to think. Oh well got to go find my ass now I guess. Lol
-
Why because he does not think the same way you do? So everyone should have the same conclusion just because they read all the post in this thread? Excuse me while I go laugh my ass off now.

I live no where near the place, but at one point I was asked by a few different companies to take over service contracts. We opted for a trial period to see if we fitted well. After about 4 trips and a weeks worth of hours to get back and forth I would of been better off driving to Arizona and taking contracts on the west coast instead of in my own home state. I have no idea how any of you do this on a daily basis, I think the term road rage comes to mind as well. I will stay in my small country town where my nearest neighbor is half a mile away.
-
You guys all know my stance on the youth hunt already, but I just dont get the whole thing. I support a youth hunt but why not do a youth bow hunt in bow season and a youth hunt in gun? Keep the weapons where the weapons belong. Definately some things need to be worked on to get more youths into the hunt. I dont however see this as them trying to open the door for guns in archery season. Adding more days to it like they have might make some difference with archery harvest numbers. They have a tough job trying to please everyone. You know the old saying you cant them all, all the time but you can please some of them some of the time. We are all so divided on our personal stance of how things should be done its impossible to make everyone happy.

Winter wheat this year was a flop. I actually cut it and redid the plot. Was suppose to stay green into winter but was dead and dry by begining of July. Thick and atleast 5 feet tall and deer didnt touch any of it. Oats on the other hand was a huge hit and deer ate it right up into winter till it was gone. There is some rye in the replant with winter peas, and other seeds I forget at this moment.
-
I would have to double check but I do believe I was at 90 lbs on just oats alone and an oh man was that plot thick.
-
Heres a twist for you. What happens if you shoot that 6, and the neighbors shoot a 150? You going to second guess your decision? Now reverse that situation and your neighbor shoots the 6 and you get a 150. You guys have a set of bylaws follow them or its going to start you down the path of "is this one a cull buck". Which culling on free range deer on 300 acres isnt going to even work.
-
Dd I read this right? Thats 174 lbs of seed for 1 acre. Sounds awfully high number to me.
-
Dont forget the landowners permits. Cant remember the acreage number to qualify for the DMP but I think its 75. Get one every year for home due to it.

Yes you have multiple times where they are fidgety and asking questions. It might even be a couple seasons. But those things go away in time. I spent a few seasons with one of my kids and she just got bored after an hour and insisted we played tic tac toe in the dirt lol. I didnt care one bit and we played tic tac toe. Why because I was in the woods enjoying time with my daughter. Then one day walking through a store she picked up a deer call and said dad buy me this. So I did. That single purchase changed the whole hunting experience for both of us. She would sit in the blind learning ho to blow on that call. The 3rd time out she had a buck come running in and was so excited that she did that by herself. That moment forward she was now a hunter in her eyes and not just a tag along. One of the boys just couldnt sit still. I made him a deal if he could sit still and we seen deer he would see what its about instead of looking at woods all day. Thankfully it worked out very well, we had about 5 doe get run by us from a small buck chasing them. Those doe stopped and milled around us for a few minutes and one came so close to him he could of jumped on her back lol. The look in his eyes is something I will never forget and he tells everyone about that day. It does take time Paula but the rewards of watching your kids slowly turn into a hunter you mentored is worth every second of the WHY questions and the excuse of throwing there glove down that hill like it was an accident so they can get up and move around. Some of those hunts lasted 5 minutes some of them lasted a couple hours but now thats all they talk about come fall. Lets go hunting dad!
-
Heres what I am thinking based on what I have seen personally. Its not the mentors that are going to push the kids to go out that already dont. Its the kids that are going to push the mentors to take them out. I am willing to wager a bet that if I told my kids I was not going to take them out on the youth hunt, they would either force me and tell mom lol or disown me as there father. I could fight back with "I take you out already all the time what is the difference" Response would be because its my day. DOC you made a statement in another thread about it a "Me Generation" sadly it is true, if parents with this me me me attitude have a day where its about the kid and not them I think it will do good, and just maybe it will influence them after seeing the enjoyment the kids got to take them more often. The only way to determine if a youth hunt is a success is to implement it right? Once it is the numbers will tell if it works or not. And yes I hope this is not the do good feeling from the state to pat them selves on the back and move on. I hope they continue to evaluate and make inprovements to getting the youth out there.

Clearing Land? Tips Tricks Anything?
wdswtr replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
John I have done all mine with a semi larger compact tractor. No backhoe just a loader and attachments. It was a long term commitment I will say that. I attacked it this way with keeping in mind that this was going to take a few years. I had at the time (now all plots) a couple areas with less work involved, brushy, some small saplings etc but for the most part an overgrown area. Then the area that had the potential for the largest plot in that special area I wanted was a bit more tasking. I will call that the wooded plot for reference, some larger trees largest being about 10" DBH. Thats the plot I attacked first. The largest trees I cut off about 4 feet up. High enough for leverage but low enough so I was not using a chainsaw over my head. I cut those up for firewood and cleared the debree. I then went after the smaller ones with a choker and chain and pulled them out roots and all. Next I brush hogged as best I could around the larger stumps. Then I turned my focus on one of the less daughnting plots. Pulled up the saplings, brush hogged, herbacide later on. Took a soil sample and sent it out. Turned the soil over and dragged the heck out of it. Waited for soil test, did any additional weed kill that was needed. Disked the heck out of it next and applied lime and fertilizer as recommended. Was able to let that work its way into the soil for atleast 6 weeks and did a fall annual planting. Following year re- attacked the wooded plot again with brush hog and an additional weed kill later. Then moved on quickly to that second plot in late spring. Killed any additional weeds, turned the soil over and dragged again. Re-planted another annual there. Then moved on to the third plot. By the 3rd spring I had 2 seasons of planting in the second plot, 2 seasons of working the ground in the wooded plot and 1 season of planting in the 3rd plot. By that 4 season I was able to get after the stumps in the wooded plot. After 4 years of being dead they pulled out easier than I thought. A few stumps not so much. But the roots were weak enough that I was able to plow around the stumps with decent succes. After a bit they all ended up getting pulled up and now its a nice clean field. The biggest task during this whole process was rocks, they seem to appear out of nowhere and get larger and larger every time I plow. lol. Yep It was alot of work, and still are alot of work. But the end result was worth it for me. Takes several years but attacking it the way I did I was busy getting the 2 other plots in and working well while making small leaps on the wooded plot.
