So you guys are saying the same buck taken in 2 difffernt picture a day apart from each other have a 2 inh difference in spread. LMAO
-
Heres another thought for you guys to think over. I have multple different calls of different brands. I do not use the same one in the same area all the time. I rotate through them especially if I already used it on a deer and it failed or spooked it. It might be over thinking on my part but if they know that particular sound and a warning signal went off in their heads why would they come into that call again? I was told a long time ago if your busted by a turkey they will never come into that call again.

Had a fake rack for rattling hated it sounded well fake lol. plus just bulky to carry around. I use a real rack most often but if Im out for an all day and Im packing a bit of stuff I go with my rattle bag. Its an older one when they first came out with the mishaped hardwood dowels. I took 1/4 of the dowels out. I also use a small 6 point rack to rattle. I will tell you what I learned or well atleast I think I learned. Those rattle bags with a bunch of rods in them or those big old plastic racks or even big real racks have a tendancy to scare the shit out of some of the bucks that are inferior to the size of the sounds your making with them. Think about it here you are a decent 8 pointer and you here this massive fight with lots of antler point crashing together are you going to come in and get your butt whooped? I keep them small and not overly aggressive. I rattle in bucks quite frequently over the years. Done it teice this year out of three times I have used it.

The lable on my bleat can says good for all phases of the rut. Isnt PreRut a phase of the rut LOL.

You say Oddly for midday movement. So far I have seen 11 deer in 8 days in 7m and all have been between 12 and 2.
-
I have had pretty good luck rattling and my favorite call to use is when I see a buck that is not on route to me the snort wheeze has worked several times. It has turned a few buck to come in. I use my mouth and hand.

Im acually a little disapointed no one said Mountain Lion.

I think the problem with using the word Kill around certain people just paints a bad picture in their heads. Amongst hunters fine but when your around people who do not understand and think Kill is like murder well harvest is a much softer term to use.

When another hunter ask me why do you hate NYB inc. ? Im pissed off just thinking about it.

Some people just dont understand that concept. To them it has to be about now and not the future. It makes perfect sense to me.- 16 replies

Looks like porcupine crap but it looks like grouse as well. I think grouse has a more pronounced white to it than in the picture and normally not in a pile like that but scattered. Taste it and let us know lol.

Yeah what he said /\ LOL

its right in the syllabus on page 26 under deer tag descriptions look at the exceptions. It states Except: may be used for antlered or antlerless deer in late season with bow or muzzleloader privilege
-
Here you go straight from the NY State Police Department Q - Are antique handguns subject to the same laws as those applied to modern handguns? The Penal Law definition of antique firearm is generally applied to muzzle loading black powder firearms, but also applies to pistols or revolvers "that use fixed cartridges which are no longer available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade". Muzzle loading pistols or revolvers do not have to be registered on a pistol permit if the owner never intends to fire them. If they are possessed in a loaded condition or are simply possessed simultaneously with the components necessary to make them fire, they must first be registered on a valid pistol permit .
-
Be sure to look it up but from memory the answer is no, but you cannot have powder or bullets to fire it without the permit. So you can not use the pistol at all other than stick it on the shelf for display.

I have hunted 7m since opening day both mornings and evening and an all day sit. To my suprise the best and most deer encounters have been in the worst weather this year which was saturday and sunday, monday nothing at all, tuesday nothing, wednesday nothing. Be back to camp on friday. So far another tough year for me like last year. The sign is everywhere it should be. Apples are getting hit hard, today scrapes started popping up. Its still warm in my opinion as well. Most movement as far as I can tell is at night when Im fast asleep. But you cant harvest a deer sitting at home so the more your out the better your odds. Hope activity picks up this weekend.

Under Armour smell...??
wdswtr replied to mossy725's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
All I can tell you is that we have tried and tried many times over to get the awful smell of sweaty hockey boys stink out of their under armour. Washed in everything from hunters detergent, even fabreezed them and scent away spray. One season and they go in the garbage. Being a maple producer I have read numerous studies on poly equipment and its effects on contamination of sap. Poly tanks are cheap in comparison to stainless steel for example. But poly absorbs odors, retains bacteria that is impossible to rid itself of due to its micro pores. Basically what a scientist that studies such things tells me the best chances of getting rid of such contamination is through autoclad machines just like hospitals use to steralize surgical equipment. -
NY DEC Adopts Deer Management Plan

I didnt put the youth season in there because they judt have it listed as to be determined. I can take an easy guess at what that deal is about. I heard and read many complaints mainly by NYB members and their emails crying there heads off about the youth hunt is going to ruin bowhunting as we know it. Remember reading that I posted it here? What I presume they are doing is not putting the dates out there until all the dates and changes have been finalized to stop all the complaints about the youth hunt date. Then once it all has gone through you will see those dates appear right where they originally proposed. I personally think the youth hunt is a great thing. Yeah I skipped over the contraception deal as I was scared to even read that part and will wait till deer season ends so I dont get all worked up and pissed off lol.- 16 replies

NY DEC Adopts Deer Management Plan
wdswtr replied to HuntingNY's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
So if I got this right they are allowing Xbows to be used in all seasons, N.tier bow extends one week and they still left ML's in on the last week of bow. N.Tier gun season remains the same lenght and pushes it to a week later to compensate for the extra week of bow. 7 AR wmu to come. Tag structure remains the same with both an either sex tag and an antlerless tag for bow and ML's. Oct 1 bow opener for S. Tier. Hope I got this right. If not im sure I will hear aout it. Thanks for keeping us updated.- 16 replies

Gun shots at first light opening day of bow season sz
wdswtr replied to Dutchess hunter's topic in Bow Hunting
Sunday morning I setup in an old apple grove quite a long ways back in the woods. I heard the unmistakable sound of a beeper on a dog. Sure enough it kept getting louder and louder untill I saw the dog and 2 hunters. I thought great here I am in full cammo and they dont know Im here. I let out a whistle and the guy yells Im over here. I had to chuckle a bit as he thought his buddy was whistling to see where he was. After one of them finally spotted me they felt pretty bad. I assured them to keep on hunting its there woods too. They were a couple of good sportmen and think they felt worse about the deal then I did. Hell I had more fun watching there dog work from 25 feet up than they did I bet lol. They were grouse and woodcock hunting. Its all good in my book we share the deer season with small game hunters or do they share the small game season with deer hunters LOL. -
Oh I took full advantage of the windy rainy weekend and spent all day saturday out in it and all morning sunday. I used the weather as a tweeking stand day lol. Saturday I seen 9 deer 8 of them does and one dandy 8 pt. After a morning watch on sunday I moved my stand I seen the deer in saturday about 30 yards. Everything stayed out of bow range on saturday as I setup on the wrong trail going into the wild apples grove. I seen deer and tweeked my setup, rain was nice to wash scent away for the last minute switch up. Be back at it tomarrow afternoon through wednesday. I do have to say if I did have any shot opportunities I would of passed on them anyways, somethings you cant control and somethings you can but tracking a blood trail in rain, dont think so. Sometimes the perfect shot goes wrong and not worth the chance. Sure was a blast however you look at it.

Oh shit growalot I glad you said backtag. Damn near out the driveway without it.

Great point Doc that I bet a few miss. Iam all set did a test run with the new clothes and looking good and on target. Underarmour is so redicously priced. The good thing about it though is I have a buddy who is a screen printer and I can order the stuff through him at cost but its stil too much money. My boys wear it for hockey and thats bad enough covering that bill.

I think there is some confusion on Quality deer management and trophy deer management amongst hunters. Anyone dare take a poke at explaining it better? I understand both and am in favor of QDM. Trophy management is going to take a far lot more hunters to jump on board to make it noticable statewide. The DEC practices QDM take a look at their website and see the land improvement they have and are making on specific state land. They dont do timber harvest or do clear cuts for new growth or plant and grow grasses in fields for nothing. Heck you cant even call it timber harvesting as they leave the down trees in the woods for winter browse and cover. QDM does not mean not shooting the small bucks its about land management and sustaining an adequate buck to doe ratio, how many deer a piece of land can sustain for example. Why would any hunter not be in favor of a healthier deer herd in NY? Healthy doesnt mean seeing big nontypicals in the woods day in and day out and nor does QDM.

Bobcat. You ever hear one scream at you in the woods? Sounds like someone is getting murdered. Unreal.
