  1. Condolences. He will be right next to you hunting, fishing and in your heart. Deepest sympathy. May his spirit live on through you. Always a shame when we loose a loved one, especially someone so close he is refered to as Dad... God Bless May he rest in peace.
  2. Love the reply's guys! Figured some others have a similar view. In so far as the trophy/meat part, we need you meat guys that’s for sure!!!!! If everyone did what I did we would be overrun with deer and considered Tropy only hunters by all... Only 2 out of 8 have the trophy view in my camp, all others are meat 1st like many here. That second guy has yet to get his first deer, my partner since 1988, passed a 4 pt on a ridge with in arms distance one year. Elmo my 1st buck was 12 years after I first started hunting yes. Taken in Moose River on a snow covered sunny day around 11:45 am. Since then I have spent many years hunting Moose River and loosing 2 other bucks was such a disappointment after so much work. Sent me to the next level... The next one was in 2010 making a 10 year gap between ADK bucks with one Catskill 4 pointer in 2007 that is the extent of my used tags. I would love to take an ADK buck with a bow yet it seems a myth, so I try harder... I have been shooting my bow with consistency at many ranges, taking 2nd in this week’s club shoot and wining a 10$ bet between 4 shooters at about 78 or 80 yard caribou hitting the 10 spot for the 40$ pool which was a better prize than the 2nd place Giants hat. Made my day! Taking 10$ from the guy that beat me by 1 point was nice too... He got the camo hat, arg. LOL The best thing about hunting the ADK is just that Dave6X6, It”s is just as our four fathers might have encountered which adds to the enchantment. Rugged, brutal, vast and unforgiving nature at its purist. No matter what happens you will have a story to tell. If you hunt those woods with that attitude it does not matter if you get a deer just that you enjoyed the moment and the day! The beauty of the ADK's nature, landscape and pristine quality of vast seemingly untouched lands make any trip in it a journey into the unknown adding to its mystic. It has taken many lives which adds to the element of danger. It is not a place to get lost in and has the ability to take the unprepared and prepared alike by surprise. DEC reports of hikers in distress are excessive as many come unprepared and calamity follows... Rangers, supported by a vast network of search and rescue teams are at the head of these rescues and are true woodsmen of the ADK; I always try to start a conversation with them as their exploits are vast and knowledge even more so. OMG defrazzle I think I looked at that property on ADKbyowner.com, beautiful area, loved the house!!! Land looked extremely promising!!! Ended up staying on LI because Mom was very upset I was going to move upstate to hang out with the deer... Love my Model 94AE, it's in 44 Mag. Great gun! Just like Defrazzle said, easy to carry,(with barrel pointed down it doesn't hit the ground requiring no shoulder harness) and no scope fogging or leaving on 10X power issues with open sights, follow up is easy making it an ideal stalking/brush gun for long distance hiking with low weight and ease of use. I used it on both ADK bucks. My 2000 buck was taken due to a truck "pushing" the deer into me. (I had hiked about 350-400 yards in 14 inches of snow to get back to this dirt road we drove in on trying just to escape my hunting partners lol, no GPS as this point so I had no Idea I was 100-70 yards from the road.) My 1st perfect broad side shot missed as the hammer block was on and only drew one ear in my direction from the deer. At this point I am saying "OMG 10 + years and I am going to miss this deer", shocked he did not run I squeeze the trigger and pull back the hammer to make no sound when recocking and take the safety off. Steady on his back shoulder I fire, kaboom he takes off. This is my 1st ever shot at a buck and he is running like I missed. I fire off 4 more rounds as he bolts and I am empty as he rounds a bush just out of view. I hear Ding Ding Ding like a key is still in the ignition and then I hear "He is down!". I walk up to the area where the deer went out of view and see a guy and kid come off the bank from the road about 50 yards and the deer on the ground. They said it was like watching ESPN. Guy states "had I waited 5 more seconds he would have taken that deer"... First shot was a heart shot with 4 lines from follow ups with hair missing and no penetration on any of them. Heart shot was found on discovery only with my friend pointing it out in astonishment. Sometimes it good to be lucky! Less then 60 yard drag to the road was simple as he was about 165 dressed. 9 pt with one broken G1 making him a 8 I estimate at least 2 1/2. Don’t get me wrong as much as I love the ADK, hunting for deer in any woods gets my blood going and is just as much fun and valued as being five miles deep in the ADK!!! The ADK just has that extra wildness that is so alluring. I can only hope I still have many years of seeing it's beauty, experiencing it's nature and introducing it to others so they can have their eyes opened to its vast space, beauty and disregard of man... PS: Thanks for the complements on the writing!!!
  3. My name is Jeff Calderone and I am addicted to mature whitetail deer hunting. With the exception of being on top of a mountain or fishing, I get no greater feeling then when I am deep in the woods. ANY deep woods... Any time... I was never formally introduced to hunting but at 18 years old (1988) I purchased my first rifle (savage model 110 in 30-06) with one of my best friends and we started our 1st hunt in the Catskills with his family friend who lived upstate. To say things did not start off good was an understatement. We found out how to poach from a truck and trespass on private property which is all I learned from this idiot. That was the first and last time we hunted with him. I took my 1st deer in Moose River in 2000 and have tried to up my game every year since. In 2001 I purchased a wall tent to eliminate the 45 minute drive to a motel. That was the year I purchased my 1st bow for extra time in the woods. Since then I have fallen in love with shooting my bow... I try to hunt as often as possible yet that is usually only 2-3 weeks a year. I have never shot a doe yet I have practiced drawing on them due to getting busted during a draw on a practice buck from a stand. Now I do not draw on many deer as I usually do not hunt from a stand. I have passed on more deer then I have ever seen hunting in the ADK. I hunt an area with very few deer and hunters, yet this is part of reason I love it. Usually if you get a deer you earned it. My biggest accomplishment was getting lucky with a mature 8 pt that I called back with a doe in heat call in 2010. Getting posted on NYantlers web site www.nyantler-outdoors.com and www.adkhunter.com was an additional highlight to a spectacular year!!! My biggest disappointment was losing 2 mature bucks in Moose River on 2 dif. years that I had tracked the day before and ambushed at 1st light, one due to a fogged scope (Now I do not wait for anyone to come with me…or hold me up…) and one due to calling in a deer too close, 10 ft away with a gun sighted in at 50 yards No buck fever just did not compensate... Soooo upsetting... Third was shooting a 4 pt that I thought was a 6 pt again I was very upset… I have hunted Green, Long Eddie, Roscoe, Port Jervis, Prattsville, Cooperstown, Brewster, Catskills, Moose River, Long Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mt. Lake, Lake placid trail from Indian lake to Long lake areas, Tupper Lake, Newcomb, Warrensburg, and the cold river. I have hunted other spots but those are the area's I have hunted more than one time... I do not hunt for meat yet I do eat my kill with pride. I pass many deer a year waiting for that one particular one with my name on him. I have been told I am a bad hunter due to this yet after explaining the concept of fair chase, exceedingly high ethics and a passion for observing deer behavior I am usually let off the hook. Although I have had many doe in my sights I have yet to be able to pull the trigger. I realize as a hunter doe need to be controlled yet the area's that need control have owner restrictions on killing doe preventing me from taking one... Will I ever shoot a doe? I figure when the time is right it will happen... I am usually the last person back to camp and beg my hunting partners to keep the radio on for me as I always get back to camp in the dark. I do not always get up early unless I have an ambush area I plan to get to... Those area’s are hard to find and change yearly, yet when I find one, look out!!! I read many books on hunting especially during the off season. I never read while in hunting camp, I sleep, eat or hunt. I have gained a vast amount of knowledge though books. I figure if one books gives you one good pointer that you would not have thought of, it was worth it... Even with all this reading I find additional information that is gained while in the field is always the most reveling. The knowledge gained from books has helped me tracking more than anything else, with low deer population some times that is all I get to see… I hunt from 10 am to dusk on a bad day and from before first light to after dusk on good days, depending on how much my hunting partners make me drink the night before… (I am not a big drinker at all, so it kicks my but!) I never come out of the woods for lunch and bring extra clothes for rain/bad weather. I never used a GPS until I purchased my 1st boat. After seeing how effective it was I started using it hunting and never leave camp without it now. Map, compass, GPS, extra food, clothes, deer calls, rabbit in distress calls a 2 way radio (no cell towers) and multiple fire starting tools and flashlights w/extra bat and bulbs. Day pack gets heavy but when it is time to eat lunch in the heavy rain or hike out 1-5 miles in the dark that extra protection is invaluable!!! I shoot often as I feel I owe it to my prey and experience has taught me is needed to become a good hunter. As my age has gone up so have my morals and standards for hunting. Safety is a factor I will never compromise and rule with an iron fist at my base camp. The woods can play games with your mind if you let it as many back country ADK hikers have found out. My first entry into Moose River Plains taught me to respect the woods and nature as David Boomhower was found that opening weekend, dead, on a remote mountain top, miles off his original course. His story still baffles many, including me!!! The ADK can take you to extreme levels of euphoria then slap you back into the pool of reality. With this the NFA No Fooling Around club began (Polite version). Respect Mother Nature, your physical abilities, your fire arm and your prey. These are things I value most as an ethical NY hunter. PS: Sorry so long yet I figured since I post here often It would give good insight. NFA GETSOME Jeff Calderone Proud NY Deer Hunter
  4. My answer is this: While he is not converting many people, he is making it a point that WE as owners of fire arms will NOT let our rights be taken away or degraded in any way. And that is a message we can all agree on I hope...
  5. Wow awsome bird Congrats!!!
  6. Welcome aboard. Hope you like the site! A lot of fun and experianced people with good advice! Check out Ninham Mutltiple use area, I hunted thier a few times, nice place, thier are a few other huntable parks in the Brewster area. Many are listed on the DEC web site. That was funny Dave!
  7. Scot you should do some research on our elected officials. They are the dirtiest bunch out thier and they represent us all... They make Ted look like a ANGEL!!! Yet people still vote for them... It is not his character that represents us, it is a voice in the oposition of the 2nd amendment degradation. And as long as he keeps on fighting for my rights as a gun owner I do not need to know the type of person he is, that is irrelevant when compaired to my right as a citizen to own a fire arm... As long as he fights for that cause I do not care how the media portrays him or that I am not a big fan. Untile we get someone to step up to the plate, I will continue to support his effort to keep my guns in my hands... PS: dont let this get to you, you seem to be harping on this, you will not change anyone's view and I think you have stated your point. Now lets go get a beer!!! Just my 2 cents. :-)
  8. My buddy the milk man does that in Caumsett and finds nice sheds Im told. Caumsett is a great excuse for shed hunting! Round swamp borders west hills wich I am told has deer. I wonder what the populations like. Makes me wonder if it is out of balance with no predation and prime food sources. Are these deer getting pushed out due to over population? I will get in thier soon, I hope. Just need to make some time...
  9. I knew I liked her for a reason! Whoopi you rock!!!
  10. Welcome aboard. Great site HOPE you love it like I do. We always like having people with experience for added input for us newbies... I shoot at Suffolk Archers and when it rains for a long time C & B Archery. Might have some questions for you about the dog as I am looking for one, or two. That dog looks so happy!!! Note, we argue a lot of dif. subjects yet at the end of the day we say, "see ya tomorrow..." Post your oppinion we value it, but do not get upset when someone disagree's and do not take anything said here personal, we are passionate about our ways yet we try to see the other persons perspective, even if we do not agree with it. United We Stand!!! Again I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!!!
  11. It takes a little more than web site info to hack some one's bank account, while age and name help it is a serious offense that most crooks find is not worth the risk. Most Facebook user's post age so what's the big deal... I realize your concern yet if you have a home phone, your name and address are posted, age is not too hard to find out. Maden mothers name, personal bank info, passwords to web sites or e-mail and Social Security # are things you never reply to in a e-mail or by phone. I recommend having up to date Virus, firewall, spam and spyware protection if you do any online banking. Always make sure your computer is clean before logging onto a banks web site!!! Always inform your bank and credit cards of any foul play or suspected unauthorized use of any acounts. Buy credit protection if you suspect you are a victim or want to be protected it's realatively cheap. Posting the location of a known firearm owner is usually deterant enough, this is not exactly a kiddy forum and we are adults even though we don't always act like it. Many of us have stong connections with the law and anti hacking enforcment. I find most personalities are strong willed and would prosecute a bank hacker to the fullest... I am 42 my name is Jeff Calderone, I live in Huntington Station NY and I took a nice buck back in 2000 that sent my hunting passion to obsession, I love stalking monarchs of the woods... And posting on HuntingNY.com. Hack some one's bank account in NY and you get to meet my good friends the NYS Police or a Federal agent, hack mine and you will see it was not worth it, lol. Next day my bank account went from 200 to 2 and I was like DAM! LOL Want to prove your a good hacker fill my bank account, that would impress me, yet it will still land you in jail... If someone thinks they are that good at hacking get a job at a security company, they pay well and it's better than jail time... Computer Tech 10 + years, when was the last time you updated, scanned AND backed up your data? Is your data worth a 100$ back up drive or 2. (pictures anyone?) Are you protected if you bank online, or if your house is hit by lightning and every connected device fails?
  12. Amen Growalot. We can only do what we feel is best at the time. I commend you for your effort, hold your head high!!! I always think it is so wierd how we are such conservationist, yet the PETA types only see us as killers... They will never understand our love for life even if you saved 1000's of lives that one deer you kill makes you a bad person... You did the right thing and that is all you can do, GOD bless you! Don't let it get you down Robinson446, the world is filled with jerks. Be proud you are one of the great people on this planet!!!
  13. That is a very good posiblilty WNYBuckHUnter. I just want to verify my form is good, proper arrows, and elliminate any tourching of my bow before changing anything. After reading a few things about paper tuning, I tend to agree with the guys down at C&B that a bow does not need to be paper tuned. After I verify no form issues and proper arrows, if I still have any issues, that will be my next step. I see my form needs some work and I have a tendancy to tourch my bow, once I resolve these issues I will see if a tuning is still needed. Hard for me to loosen my grip on the bow, another part of my form I am working on...
  14. Congrats and best of luck with it!!! Hope it takes you safely many miles and many adventures!
  15. Very cool congrats on a outstanding weekend! Wow that IS the oldest Turkey I have ever seen! Awsome!!!
  16. Most of the conversations I have are very casual. If I feel too much resistance I back off because no matter what I say that person will not change how they percieve hunting. Many times it is just a passing conversation. I will be in a office and someone will ask if I have been hunting at all. Then the person next to them asks if I am a hunter. This is when I proclaim that yes in fact I hunt. The 1st question is how can you do that, or how can you hurt them. That is when I explain my reasoning and the justification of hunting... It is alway easy when you have answers like these examples to reason with a non-hunter, NOT to make them into a hunter themselves but to explain in rational thought and reasoning behind allowing hunting... I am not saying I can convert but if I can make them understand why hunting is so importiant, thier acceptance for it becomes based on information and facts and not "How can you kill Bambi..." Working in a environment filled with women it is usually a casual conversation and many are willing to hear me out. Great point with the city Elmo, and Scot you are right on the lines I usually provide. While I know most will not be converted, I try to expand thier view on the subject. From a ethical, conservationist type of view. Some hear me out and understand yet like Landtracdeerhunter and Dave said some are set in their ways and will never change. They still listen to my point of view and some then realize how hunting helps the environment but it is a uphill battle. Once I am sucked onto the conversation I just can not stop, especially with the misinformed...
  17. Thanks G-Man I will have to check that book out. Thanks Doc, anything that helps prove our side is helpfull... These points make my discussion easyer to explain... Especially to people who do not go into the woods and have no real concept of nature.
  18. I would hope this post would get more hits as we all have moms to thank. Love you MOM! Happy Mothers day to all the protectors out thier, threaten a child and you will learn. Thier is no wrath like a moms. Defenders, protectors, and hierarchy of the house and family... God bless all Mom's!!! THANK YOU to all the "second" Moms of the world who treat us and made us feel like family even though we were not. I love you.
  19. I work in a area with little woods and a large sump next to a mall... We have a whole bunch of geese that come every year and have babies... This year one of the adult males apparenty broke a leg, the girls I work with have called many animal protection groups for help to no avail. He can still fly they say... I try to explain how crule nature is and how this animal might die a horrible death. Then I explain why hunters are such a importian part of an eco system. We are good stewarts of our land and keep populations under control. Better than any Vegan who fences thier garden to prevent nature from eating thier food. We live off the land instead of enclosing it. We are animal lovers who will go through great personal cost to have well balanced food for our animals even if we do not hunt that particular game. I explain how cruel mother nature is and how the world is not alway picture perfect especialy in nature. I tell of deer killing deer for the love of Bambi. I explain how starvation hits hard and winters even harder. I explain how population control is needed to keep nature in check and how hunters are the only ones who are capable of this. Yet I get a wierd look at times when explaining... When this happens I direct my attention to that person for they are not seeing my point of view. As a person with company run by woman and dominated by women I am usually the minority. As much of a ethical hunter as I claim to be this does not change thier point of view and I am now the enemy... I wear my camo hat proud and with dignity and will never let anyone enfringe on my personal ethics or moral for hunting. It is real easy to say hunting is cruel from a person who never entered the woods and experianced what nature is all about. Or someone who never worked on a farm or a butcher shop and seen a animal go from live to your plate, that is a wake up call all meat eaters should go through, IMO. And IMO is the reason why so many humans see hunting as cruel, they never saw the meat they eat live... I explain to my coworkers that nature is cruel and inhumane. This is what nature is really about, survival of the fittest. And all those baby pics we send out of animals on the internet is cool and cute but threaten one of those babies and see how mom reacts. God bless all moms!!! My question to you is this. When confronted by a anti-hunter or someone who is on the fence on which side is right. How do you explain your ethics for hunting and can you get your point accross to that person so they understand a hunters point of view?
  20. While Ted is not the best rep. and I think we all agree on this, he gets us talking. Does he represent me as a hunter NO, but you can be dam sure I back him 100% with the 2nd ammendment. The fact that he is a draft dodger, poacher, and acts crazy does not change my point of view on my right as a gun owner. The media hates him so anything that he does bad is viewed by all. The people in Hollywood, the media and politicians with a voters mentality are our enemy, most have no concept of hunting and probably never go into the woods or have ever fired a gun or killed a animal and gone through the entire process of cleaning Apreciating and eating our food. Due to those facts they will NEVER be on our side. Bambi has won thier hearts and they will never understand what hunting and nature is realy about. This is why we will never have another Hollywood rep in the NRA, It will kill thier carrier................................................... We are seen as a blood thirsty trophy hunters by the anti's who kill for pleasure. When was the last time you saw a hunter take a nice deer and then thank the lord? Does not happen enough. Next time you make a video will you think about how well you represent hunters? It is so easy for anti's to say hunters are a bad people who hate animals. YouTube shows many bad hunters with no respect for thier prey... Yet those same people would complain if we did not hunt and thier auto rates and price of food went up due to crop decimation/over population. Untile we get a better rep. I will not advocate Ted yet I will not put down his points on the 2nd ammendment, he is right... As much of a black eye that he puts on us all he still gets our point accross that we will not stand for our rights being overrun. Do you know the anti's want to allow the UN to take over our rights making guns illegal except for law enforcement. While I do not like Ted as a representative for hunting, his points on gun rights are sound, that is enough for me untile I see another person who will step up to the plate for us he has my full support as a 2nd ammendment advocate... No one else has the you know what to do it... And for that he has my respect and support on my rights as a gun owner. Happy Mothers Day!!!
  21. Tried out a new release today. T.R.U. Ball B.T. Gold Ultra 3. WOW talk about form! I shot a 6 inch group at 40 yards then went on to shot some 3 D. After missing 2 targets I started to dislike this release, lol. It is all about form, after my form started to get worse as the day progressed my shooting became horible. I think it is a great tool for working on your form yet I dont like it's position on my face or the inablilty to "snap shoot" or follow up quickly, not that you can not do that its just I can't... Still seeing the arrows wobble, picked up 8 Beman ICS Hunter 340 - 9.3 gpi 0.003 tol. l"ll try them out but as this release has shown me I need to work on a more consistant form... Easyer when Im tired to "snap shoot" the target rather than hold a good form and steady pin in place over the target. This release has shown me that even though I can shoot good my form needs much improvement, Ha and I thought I was doing so good, lol...
  22. LMAO Steve! O MY that last line was funny... We all have our own oppinion on him, good bad or indifferant he is not going away anytime soon...
  23. Agreed CulvertCreek, I don't like the way he says things at times but I am glad he is saying them!!! If he did not who would?
