    Last day

Good luck to all on the last day of firearms. Looks like I'm done for the season. Won't get the opportunity to go up again next weekend for muzzy. No worries, my freezer is stocked. May go up between Xmas and New Years for some Yotes. We shall see . . .
  2. Thank God you are ok. Could have been a heck of a lot worse for both of you. Had a scare like that myself few years back driving up the Taconic in the dark. Only two deer which I missed by a hair. Had to change my pants when I got to the house. Wont drive the Taconic in the dark anymore.
  3. Go ahead and use it. I put gut piles out as yote bait so rancid meat is no different.
  4. Hey Grizz, Where about in 4Y? That's my area as well off route 6 on private land. I tagged out on opening weekend - shot medium doe and 7 pt buck about 190lbs.
  5. Wait look he's doing the Achy Breaky Heart dance. LOL
  6. Found this floating on facebook Made me chuckle - Jordan Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. I've used Fins to Feathers & Smithpoint archery for tanning, but dropped off my first for mounting at Fish and Wildlife Unlimited in Oakdale. Came highly recommended by a good friend.
  8. I found a place in Great Neck called Repairsharks, LLC off 25A. It got some positive reviews and the cost is $160 for screen replacement. Apple did not offer screen replacement. They just offered a refurbished Ipad for $275. Considering the fact that the Ipad still works and is responsive, it looks like its just a digitizer screen issue and not the LCD underneath the glass. I think I'm going to go with Repairsharks. . . .
  9. damn thing was in a case but it slipped out of my fingers and hit my foot and then the tile floor cracking the screen. Needless to say I ordered an Otterbox defender for mine. I went to the Apple store today and they told me they don't replace screens but offered a reconditioned replacement for $275 including tax. I read online that there are repair places out of state where you ship it and they will replace the screens for you for anywhere from $25 to $160. Not crazy about sending it out. Anyone know of any local place where they can repair the screen? Anyone ever send their Ipad/iphone out for screen replacement? Also saw online instructions on DIY. Not sure if I want to do that. I would appreciate any advice on this as I feel horrible about dropping it especially since I'm always telling her to be careful with her phone and ipad.
  10. Funny you mentioned that. When I applied for my first job in the legal department of a major insurance company 20+ years ago right out of law school, during my interview I started spewing off my achievements, deans list, honor roll, mock trial team etc., The interviewer looked at me and said "I don't care about that, I hired someone last week because they played lacrosse at St John's". Thankfully his next words to me were - "When can you start?" I still remember that comment like it was yesterday.
  11. And on Long Island it's primarily football and lacrosse - where they hope they can get into college on scholarships but they don't know how to read. Truly sad . . .
  12. I agree 1000% and I am willing to lay out the upfront costs but the problem is that not too many people would agree especially in areas like where I live where there are still a lot of old timers (no offense to anyone on the forum) who no longer have kids in school and are living on a fixed budget. I'm sure some people will tell them it's time to move out. But is that the answer? Even younger couples who move into this areas are struggling to find jobs and make money to support themselves let alone have to pay higher taxes.
  13. Doe I disagree about cutting sports completely. Should they put more emphasis on education over sports? Without a doubt YES! But the students do need an avenue to relieve some anxiety, tension, and stress over the amount of school work they get. And yes I've seen it first hand with my daughter how her taking Advanced Placement courses in 10th grade puts a lot of stress and anxiety on her. When she runs for 1 1/2 hours after school with her Cross Country team and now winter track team how much more relaxed and focused she gets when she sits down and does her work.
  14. I agree. It is a double edge sword moving in an endless circle. If we try making education a priority in the US like in Europe and Asia, that involves dumping a lot more money into the system. Where will this money come from? We the people is where it's going to come from in the form of higher taxes. This will cause those of us who are homeowners to complain even louder about having to pay higher taxes. Then after we dump more money into the system and we don't get the results we want then we start asking what good did it do us? And the circle continues on . . .
  15. I read today that NY will be one of 5 states to extend the school days and hours in a trial period over 3 years. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/03/education/school-districts-in-5-states-will-lengthen-their-calendars.html?_r=0 I'm not sure if am for it or against it. Extending the hours may give students more time in each subject to understand the material better. But the work my 15 yo is getting in 10th grade AP courses today is so much more and even harder than what I was taking in HS 30 years ago and I was taking AP courses too. I don't know if extending the school calendar will help much with that but extending the hours will take away time from after school activities such as school sports, which I believe makes a well rounded student. It will no doubt increase school taxes even more to cover the additional hours. I'm sure I speak for most New Yorkers when I say I'm tired of paying the highest school taxes in the Country and not getting the results we should be getting from our schools for our kids. Based upon what I read, the US education system is so far behind many European and Asian countries. I am not sure who will benefit more from the extension - the school, the students or the taxing municipalty. But I'll take a shot in the dark and say the municipality will benefit the most. What do you all think?
  16. I never said to poke it with a "loaded" firearm. I usually throw a stone and if doesn't move then tap it with my "unloaded" rifle.
  17. A guy in his 50's shoots an 8pt buck in New Hampshire. He tracks it and finds it. Instead of using his rifle muzzle to poke and see if the deer is dead, this not so brilliant part of the gene pool kneels down and pets it between the antlers. Guess what happens next? http://www.unionlead.../NEWS/121209808
  18. Some nut job killed three people at Wyoming Community College using a "sharp edged wepon". Forget gun control. Knife control is on the new agenda. http://news.yahoo.com/wyo-man-kills-2-self-attack-locks-down-213946487.html
  19. Here is a video of a spike that came out from behind and to the left of my treestand about 5 minutes or so after shooting a 7 point buck that was about 50 yds out to the left of my stand.
  20. Venison & pork burgers for dinner. Sausage and peppers (jambolt) on the side. Home made red wine. Can't get better than this! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Great story! It's not always about the kill . . .
  22. I have mixed feelings about this season. Before bow season there were tons of deer moving about, as much as up to 30 in one field in my area. During bow, out of the 5-6 times I went up to hunt, I saw deer moving about but only two came within bow range - a fawn with spots and a small four pointer which busted me on the draw. Also saw a small spike not more than 14 yds from my stand in the woods. As far as firearms, I had the best opening weekend in my life - shot a doe on opening day and a 7 pt (biggest in my life) the next day. I expected to see a lot more deer this firearms season given the fact that the winter was very mild. I saw only a handful roaming about on opening weekend but far off from my set up except for the two I put down. Nevertheless I'm planning to go up for muzzy and hopefully take another doe to make jerky, sausages and ground meat for burgers.
  23. Usually around 6:30. Homemade wine will be on the table Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Grinding about 6lbs of venison and 2lbs of pork and made venison burgers for dinner tomorrow. Yum! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
