If anyone is around the Potter / Naples area , you might enjoy this . Dear Co-op Member, We hope that this finds everyone well and ready for the upcoming deer hunting season. We have scheduled an informal fall meeting for Saturday, September 25th to provide everyone with an opportunity to get together to talk about hunting and the deer that they’ve seen or caught on trail cam. The meeting will start at noon and will be held at Ken Frearson’s hunting camp at 1625 Italy Valley Road. Lunch, including hot dogs, salads, etc will be provided. In addition to providing an opportunity for everyone to get together before the season starts, we will also kick-off our deer hunting contests for 2010 and provide some information about the importance of maintaining and submitting observation and harvest information. Contests As last year, we will feature both a “Big Buck” and a “Dough” contest during the 2010 deer hunting season. The entry fee remains $5 for each, and the rules for both are unchanged from last year. You may enter the contests either in person at the meeting on the 25th, or if you cannot attend the meeting you can mail-in the entry slip and fee by October 15th. For those considering the Dough contest, please remember the importance of fully completing the “entry slip” including doe age and indicating whether or not the doe was lactating if a 1 ½ year old. The percent of yearling does found to have been bred as a fawn is an important indicator of local herd health. Last year’s contest data indicated a 20% lactation rate among yearling does, however the small sample size makes this number suspect. DEC biologists estimate the doe fawn breeding rate at about 7% in our region. Information for both contests is attached. As determined at our spring meeting, last year’s Big Buck contest winner was Ken Frearson, and the three Dough contest winners were Charles Stackhouse, Larry Hann, and Roger Smith. Observation and Harvest Information As always, members are encouraged to maintain and submit observation and harvest information as this is the only means by which we can judge our progress in improving our local deer herd and our deer hunting experience. This is how we know that mature buck sightings have increased by 30% on member properties since our inception in 2007. About 36% of member properties submitted data last hunting season. If you participated last season - thank you, and if you didn’t, please consider doing so this year. Observation and harvest data submitted by members is never shared with other members in a property specific fashion. Observation and harvest reporting forms and instructions are attached. Hope to see you at the meeting on the 25th! Please call or write with any questions. John (585/554-3336) & Ken (585/636-4264)

Butchering my own deer takes a day of hunting away from me . I almost always process the deer the day after I hang it up . So , it's skin , cut , grind and vacuum seal in one day

I purchased the photoshare unit from the Sportsman's Guide . My member price was 35.97 but the shipping charges jacked up the price ($9.49) plus $.99 insurance . I had a $10 coupon so my final cost was $36.45 . IT had a unique battery that is rechargable . You can tak it in the woods and check out the SD cards from your Trail Cam . That's why I bought it . It also hooks up to your TV or computer . It's 9" X 5 1/4" X 7/8" .

The biggest problem I have butchering deer is being able to grab hold and cut off the "silver skin" . I have arthritis in my fingers and one of my fingers locks up quite often . Other than that , no problem .

Make a fake scrape . Rake leaves , debreis so you leave a 3' bare circle in a spot where you can hang the bag overhead . You want to simulate it looking like a scrape .

Early/Mid Bow Season Boots
fasteddie replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I bought a pair of Itasca 400 gram knee high boots at Gander Mt a couple months ago . They are reasonably comfortable . I got them because they aren't tight at the ankle or leg . They have slots in the sides so I can grab them with my arthritic hands . I had previously owned a pair of Guide Gear boots that I got from Dick's . They cracked from top to bottom in the front and back . Only had them for 3 years . -
"I think it should be up to the parent as to when the child is ready" ?????????????? I don't think so . There are a lot of stupid parents out there .

Well I got the stand up today . I couldn't put it where I had planned as the fenceline was on the wrong side of the tree and if might have caused a riff with my sister in law's neighbor so I found another spot Check out a couple other stands I have there and did some trimming . On the way back from the stand I had just put up , I spotted a couple deer . I approached them slow on the ATV and got within 40 yards , stopped and took a couple pics .They were fawns and bolted when I started up again .

Awesome pics Dave !

Anybody have a decent Venison Chili recipe?
fasteddie replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Similar to SlowHand's I cook up 3 - 4 pounds of ground venison . While I am cooking the venison , I open a 28 oz can of diced tomatoes and another of crushed maters and dump them in the crock pot . I dump in 3 cans of chili beans and a green pepper cut up quite small . When the ingredients in the crock pot get warm , I pour in a package of McCormick hot chili mix . After the meat is cooked , I drain it and mix in a pack of McCormick regular chili mix and stir well . I then pour the meat into the crock pot , mix it up and leave it on high for a couple hours . When Football season rolls around , I get things ready on a Saturday night . I don't add the meat to the other ingredients . I put the crock pot with the heated ingredients in the fridge and do the same with the burger . On Sunday am , I plug in the Crock pot , pour the meat in , set it on low before we leave for church . I may turn up the heat when we get home and by the time the game starts at 1 pm , it's more than ready . The Italian bread goes real well with chili . I use to have season tickets at the Ralpf and the chili was always a hit when we tailgated -

Another site suggestion would be HUNTING GEAR . Much of this gets inter-mixed with various forums and gets lost in the process . Just a suggestion . -
Lower the legal shooting distance for bow????
fasteddie replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Bow Hunting
Posting your property doesn't mean anything to a lot of people . If you don't hang the posted signs high enough , some violaters will tear them down . As a hunter and someone who supports hunting I wouldn't want someone hunting in my back yard . -
Yupper . That little metal clip (ultra nock) made a Ka-zing sound when I released the string . The string loop makes a very light pfffffffffttttt ! No comparison ! : Now that I have hearing aids , I can tell the difference between the ka-zing and a pffffffffftttt with no problem .
