Whats best to plant in a secret spot?
dave6x6 replied to TeeBugg's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
All the companies out there have a throw and grow that would work in your area but my personal favorite is secret spot. With a leaf blower and a rack you can get down to the dirt and thats really all thats needed for these seeds to grow. (good soil contact) I think the only delemna you will have is your desire to put the plot in this early. If it doesn't have some size to it, you run the real risk of having it eatin' down to the dirt before the season rolls around. Your in Newark which is not far from me and i know there is alot of great deer turf out there with good deer numbers. Thats why most often we like to plant these annuals late in the summer and hope the deer are busy eating the farmers soybeans and clover and soft mast thats pretty abundant that time of year. I have planted two secret spot plots in June before and they both made it just fine into the season but they were both more than 1/4 acre plots and they weren't far from 13acres of other planted food. I guess it can't hurt to try it youself in June. You won't know until you see what happens. If they do eat it down, you may just have to rough it up and overseed it in mid to late Aug again. -
Clovers, lime and fertilizer.
dave6x6 replied to erussell's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
LOL, Thats so true. Clover all over my yard and never put lime on it ever. Maybe thats why it never grows over 3 inches high in the yard though.?? Still, I never plant it in my plots without doing the soil test and adding lime to try to get it as close to 7.0 as i can. Don't know if i'd say it "won't grow" without it but i do think that you may end up with a weaker planting and the weeds will have an advantage in poorer soil. -
New to this site...Not a new hunter by any means
dave6x6 replied to 2BassTurds's topic in Introductions
Welcome to the both of you to the site. Jump right in and give us your 2 cents. You'll find that it's like one big family here. Thats why we bicker sometimes. And as family it should be perfectly ok to just check out the members site map and pick a piece of property that looks promising in those counties you listed. Then just show up on opening day of bow. I'm sure that will be just fine with the guys/gals on here.. -
Growalot, Good point and let me just clarify my last post a bit. I'm not accusing Ted of trespassing, I simply was stating that ussually we all are pretty outspoken about what should happen to your average Joe hunter when they break a game law on this site. Clearly Ted has done that and i just think consistancy would be nice. And also for the record, I will state what i said earlier in that I do believe Ted has a role to play in this fight, but I'm just not sure it should be in front of tv camera or radio mic. Firing up our base at conventions or speaking at gun advocate events are great because he certainly motivates the troops like few others can. And I also applaude him for the work he's done for kids and the less fortunate. Just imagine how powerful he could have been if he didn't make so many other poor decisions. Believe me, I take no pleasure in the loss of respect for him. I will be open minded enough to let him try to EARN it back. Unfortunately from his press release that Grouse posted, it doesn't sound like he's interested in my jealous, cheap feelings. LOL

Yea Wooly, you do have a talent thats for sure. Great pics. I said A talent.. singular. LOL

He could have asked his buddy for something that wouldn't have hurt so bad like " i wonder what it would feel like to sleep with you sister" ? Wait, that wouldn't have worked because the buddy would have said " I've already slept with my sister and it wasn't that fun..."

That sounds like it will be good watching. I have to admit, i'm a bit of a survival show junkie. The critics love to point out all the flaws but you get a good deal of good info, and if you watch enough of them, as i do, you weed out the made for tv stuff. Been honing some skills lately. Nothing that involves nudity and ice water though..LOL

Paper tuning is a real debate these days isn't it? For me, I just can't sleep at night unless i know what my arrows are doing 10-20-30 ft down range. It just makes me feel better. LOL. That being said. Grouping with broadheads trumps all paper holes at the end of the day. Fortunately with my bow and set-up and form, bullet holes make the tightest groups. I've heard certain bows like to shoot better without perfect holes but that would drive me nuts.

Don't make me look up all those posts on Tresspassers and baiters and spot-light jackers and game law breakers where there was not much "forgiveness and glass houses talk and we've all made mistakes." I remember it like this. " Strip their hunting privledges for life and confiscate all their guns." Double standards are for the Libs...

Yea, i thinks it's too late for her to grow on me.. The two of us are linked at the hip. She is definetly Daddy's girl. We would let her go still but we've said that the situation has to be perfect or we'll just keep her. Still very tough here at home with the two dogs but we've been working hard to get them to be friends. Not even close yet but much better than over the winter.

Well, Good debate. I'm sincerely glad we are all so passionate about this issue even if we disagree about how the message should be spread. I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to this issue and i believe good will triumph in the end. Thanks to all of you for doing what you can..

Doc, Thank you for solidifying my point. Even in my sleep and with my closed loop, naive mind i can see that Ted meets none of the criteria that you yourself are calling on us to do. And I quote, "reach out to voters who don't hunt or who don't have cast-in-concrete views on guns and hunting." Does He??

WNY. The legend continues. What a great bird. Thanks for the awesome pics..

Thankfully i am blessed to spend today celebrating 3 wonderful gun supporting mothers. My mom raised 4 boys, all hunters, 3 concealed carriers and one working towards his. My mother-in-law was married to a police officer and raised 2 daughters. Jackie is now the only women in the state of Pennsylvania to have reached some pistol certification for training(i honestly don't know which certification? ) and my beautiful wife who is a writer, concealed carrry permit holder and a great shot i might add, will be doing an article for Rochester Womens Magazine on women and guns for next months issue. Through their love of country and family, they managed to very quietly foster a 100% pro-gun family tree. Well I guess there were a few Ted Moments along the way LOL.. Happy Mothers Day to you all..

It's 1 am and no one's on line so i'll add this. I'm not saying that Ted doesn't have a role in this fight. Entertaining he is. But for God sakes, we are talking about an issue that is the linch-pin of freedom and American greatness. The 2nd amend. is the fibre that holds the entire constitution together and in turn holds the goodness of this country together. The leader of a cause that great will have to have goodness in his fibre as well. History has shown that leaders with anything less have only led to the destruction of themselves and everything around them. I just dont see the bloated sence of worth that some of you have for what Ted has brought to gun owners?? Or what you think he may be able to do for us in the future. Actually i see a net loss for our side. And i got news for you. A one minute sound bite from George Clooney is ALWAYS gonna trump Teds routine. Sorry, just giving you the facts from Real-ville USA. You can look through some rose colored shooting glasses if you want but thats a glimps at non-gun owners for you all out there. Some mega star would help our morale maybe but the battle will take the masses rallying around someone special. Freedoms greatest fights have been won by great leaders who always had the strength of character and integrity to carry the weight of the fight on their shoulders until they defeated their enemy. Washington, Adams, Lincoln, Reagan, Susan B. Anthony, Churchill, Martin Luther KIng, Margret Thatcher.. These are the giants of Freedom and giants of mankind. 2nd Amendment deserves better. By the way , i think Tom Selleck could be that next great NRA leader in the same way Charlton Heston was. Could be??

my 2cents. Nuge is the worst thing to ever happen to the gun rights community. He has never turned one anti to our side in his whole career as far as i can tell. And he will never be Charlton Heston even if he lives to be as old as moses lived to be. In true Ronald Reagan form, Heston slapped the anti's and the lefty media around without breaking a sweat and did it with a class that made people want to hear his message and wanted to follow him because he was a good and decent man and he was fighting a good and decent cause. Even if you weren't a republican you liked Reagan and even if you didn't own a gun , you liked Heston. Someone will step up and lead this fight but unfortunately when Teds involved, there is only room for Ted. We have freedom, facts, goodness, integrity, and history on our side. We don't need the Freak.

I have always used a loop and i tie my own as well. It's very easy to do and i'm a bit fussy about the length of the loop. Mine needs to be as short as i can get while still being able to clip on the release. Just as your string will stretch, so will your loop and if you don't notice it your shooting may become inconsistant. At least thats the case with me. With a short, tight loop, I can see the suttle stretch and re-tie when it starts to cause my draw and ancor to be out of sinc so to speak. I suppose thats one advantage that the solid loops have but i've used them briefly one season and they have a tendency to put accuracy robbing torque on the string if you don't have really solid form. A loop will be more forgiving to minor form flaws.

You certainly do want to give the lime time to raise the ph but there are ways to lime, fertilize and plant in the spring. I'll be doing just that in the next few weeks in a clover plot i have going right now. I'll be discing in the ag lime this week but knowing full well that it will be at least 6-9 months before it really effects the ph. So i'll be spraying Aggrand liquid lime into the soil bed at planting and again after the plants are growing. The liquid works much more quickly and actually acts as a buffer, fooling the plants and allowing them to absorb the nutrients in the soil better. The liquid will buy me time until the ag lime kicks in and does it's thing..

Deer Management Radio Debut
dave6x6 replied to dave6x6's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
No I wasn't on at all. I got bumped. LOL We taped the segment on thur. night and they told me that might happen depending on how the other segments and interviews go. Thanks for checking it out Paula. I'm not sure when they plan on airing it but i'll keep ya'll informed. Kinda bummed, I told everyone and their brother that i was going to be on. Funny thing was I overslept this morning and wouldn't have even heard it if i made the show.. -
If access to your plots are pretty easy then buying the ag lime and renting the buggy from your local fertilizer wholesaler is a great way to go.

E and splitg2. You've convinced me to try the rye/oats mix in the fall. Got some new turf to hunt and been laying out the future plot sites so this will be going in 1st of sept. Thanks for the good info.
