Progression of a clover plot
dave6x6 replied to agross's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Agross, I know what you mean about the weather channel or weather.com . I can't help but check it about 10 times a day after i plant. When i put the clover in this may, it didn't rain for 9 days. I was flippin out. Then we got that good soaking last week and now the weather has been perfect. The client said the clover is doing great.. Wheww. I always say, just like when you shoot a good buck, you don't celebrate til you wrap your hands around those horns. Well when you put in a plot, no matter how maticulous you've been, you don't celebrate til it's thriving and mother nature has done her thing. -

Nice looking plot .. -
Although the polititians have made this a miserable place, there are still very few places in this country that are as amazing as the fingerlakes. If you like the outdoors, most anything you can think of is within an hours drive. Especially if fishing is your thing. From great lakes to small streams to flooded timber to raging rivers... We are also blessed with some great whitetail and turkey turf. Throw in the beauty of the changing seasons and you should never get bored. The only thing it lacks for me is that true solitude that you can get from the big woods of the north or from western states. Here you have plenty to do but your going to have to share it with alot of people. As for the site, i think it's great and i enjoy it a bunch. I also think there is alot to learn from the in-fighting that sometimes takes place. If everyone always agreed with the views that you already have, then your not going to learn anything new are you? And if you think your views are always the best ones then your dillusional. Seems i've learned the most and been challenged to see other sides by the people i've debated with the hardest. I'm grateful to them for that..

You're right and i appologize for the distraction so i'll try to get things back on track with this picture that seemed a bit strange. The first picture is just to show what the camera is viewing and the second shows some strange light..? Seems to close and low to be a plane so i'm going with space-ship..

Thanks Robinson, kinda surprised that we haven't found a new owner. I have a flyer at work with probably 30 pull tabs with our phone # and the thing is picked clean but only a couple calls. Had one yesterday but the lady has never owned a dog and has kids she wants to give a dog to. We didn't think Bailey would be right for that situation and suggested she try to adopt an older, more mellow dog from the shelter or something. With Baileys issues, we felt a more dog savy owner would be needed, or at least someone who would be willing to keep up with her training. We just finished a 6 week class and she was clearly the star of the class. She is so smart and picks up on the training very easy. The other 6 dogs in the class didn't have a clue.. anyway, thanks for asking and we'll keep looking. Here's Bailey at camp..

Also, Here's a true, no myth or mystery, undeniable UFO from one of our fellow members trail cams. A true Unidentified Flabby Object..

Pretty cool ufo. Here's one of Tinkerbell.

Had a buddy that worked for the company that supplied us with our meat at work. He lived and breathed hunting and i never saw him without some camo on. During the season it almost got to the point where i would be reluctant to share my hunting success with him because he had been at it for 20 + yrs, bow and gun, without having any harvest. Couple years back he went out to his favorite spot but as dark came, he never returned home. The family went out with some lights and there they found him. Sitting under a big oak tree, gun still in his hands and layed across his lap. He had passed away, just a young guy in his 40's, of heart complications. I often find myself thinking of him during the season when things are slow and in my thoughts i always picture him under that tree. I smile when i wonder if a booner stepped into view just before his heart gave out. RIP Bob..
-
Erussell. Some very productive shedding on your part. By the way, did your mysterious friend who shall remain nameless (and faceless) score that othe side? With a 20 inch spread or so, you got a bonified Booner running around. That'll get you fired up for the season..

Yes I do as a matter of fact, i just got home and my dogs love when i smell like Schaller's Cheeseburger's and Hot Sauce.. Better hit the shower. -
Culver, yes you are right that in most cases the DEC seems to need some sort of complaint or other violation before they investigate the baiters. That was the case with the salt lick guy. Seems the neighbor found a blood drag mark that started 30yrds out in his posted field, and led back to the hedgerow where the guy hunted. Because the neighbor never got a call (which is all he asked the guy to do if he shot something and it went on his property), he called the DEC to have them look into it. Thats when they found the guy in his stand with the lick 20yrds away. The apples and corn guy, from what i know was just a random discovery by the DEC and he waited for the hunter to show up and nailed him. First case was in the W. Bloomfield area. Second was in Victor.

Cant believe how in-expensive that is. It would cost you almost $650 just for a hotel for six days..
-
I agree completely Fasteddie, I don't get it. I haven't checked lately but are they still selling three blade Rage broadheads? What's their convoluted excuse for that. As for the DEC, in my opinion, they do a great job here in 8h. I know of two guys that were busted for baiting . One with apple piles and corn, the other with a salt lick in front of a trail camera and 20yrds from a tree stand. In that case they came right up to the guy as he was hunting out of that stand. I would bet that 50% of people don't know that you can't put those liquid type, pour in the dirt attractants in front of your trail cams, even in the off season.

I work at one of my families three restaurants. We've been in business almost 60yrs and i can tell you that this freegin' state is not going to stop until they suck every nickel out of the private guys back pocket. Hell their diggin in my front pockets now and I think they enjoy grabbbin' more then my money.. -
great job on a dandy bird. You were able to get a gobbler and a sweet new profile picture all in one morning.. Turkaholics everywhere salute you.

Weather worked out and was able to get the clover in the ground today. Just as you don't celebrate a buck when you shoot him but rather when you get your hands wrapped around his headgear, the same holds true for food plots. You don't celebrated when you put the seed in the ground but rather when the plot is thriving and deer are enjoying your plantings. Still I can't help but be happy about the results of this project. I'm pretty confident the hunter and his young daughter, who loves to go hunting with Daddy, will be making awesome hunting memories for years to come. Thats what makes putting these plots in for others so enjoyable to me.

It's always something isn't it. Weather looks good for the next few days, unless you got a bunch of rain today. Looked like the middle of the state got most of it from the radar i saw. Let us know how you did.

The brown spots are caused by the high levels of nitrogen in their pee. As far as i know, there are no cures but a few things may help. (none are very practical either, sorry)If you are fertilizing your lawn, try using a low or no Nitrogen mix. Saturate the area he peed with water after he does his thing. (not likely). Or try the suppliments that you can add to his diet. (not sure if these work). I just find myself buying some sod and cutting out the bad spots when it gets annoying or if were having a summer get together.

You big woods hunters have my complete respect.. And I must say that there is just something special about listening to and seeing pictures of life and hunting in the ADK. The history and legend makes time seem to stand still. When i hear a great ADK hunting story, my mind try's to picture it as i'm reading, but the date in my mind never seems to be modern times. It's just big woods mountain men hunting the same way it's been done for centuries up there... The hard way. and the way that seems to satisfy the soul..

Fantail, Great videos.. The plot looks super also. I particularly like how you worked it in and out between the trees. That tends to make the deer much more comfortable when they come to feed.

Sprayed in early april, then ripped it with the two bottom plow a few weeks later. Finally got the 6 ft. disc on it this past weekend. Dragged it today and am pretty much ready to plant tomarrow but the rain is starting. We'll see how things look in the morning.

Sounds like he was our kind of guy First Light. Prayers are with you and your family..

Here's a couple pics of the plot i've been working on for a client in 8h. This has been a bit of a challenge this spring but finally the weather cooperated with my schedule this week and i was able to get it whipped into shape where i can finally feel comfortable with the soil. It was in a hard to access area and was not able to use some of the heavier equipment that would make quick work of this once fallow field but the disc did a good job today. Was able to disc and lime and so with some luck, we'll be prepin' the seedbed and layin' down the seed sometime this week.

Nice pic Paula. I was out today working a food plot and saw a couple nice looking bucks in a group. I was really surprised at the head gear on two of them. Already 6 points with gear to the ears. Got me fired up and also lets me know i better get the cameras ready and in the woods.

Whats best to plant in a secret spot?
dave6x6 replied to TeeBugg's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Gander Mountain and Dicks usually carry Secret Spot as well as other Brands of no-til seeds. You can find many other ag stores carrying some food plot seeds as well and you can always have Secret Spot shipped from Whitetail Institute. Last time i looked they had free shipping deal going on.
