  1. My dads up there now mowing the clover fields, but hes not too technologically advanced to retrieve the SD cards for me so it will be a couple more weeks before I retrieve some more pictures.
  2. I ride a suzuki 500 quadmaster. Have had it for 10 years now and is a complete workhorse. Helps with ALOT of chores around my property. Use the quad almost all year until snow gets too deep.
  3. I use the grim reapers, they do devestating damage. I may be switching to the rage 2 blade, just to test them out.
  4. small plots (1/2 acre or smaller) with cover that surrounds the plot on atleast three sides is ideal. Small plots in the middle of your property would best, especially if there is thick cover or ridge not to far away. My 1/2 acre clover/turnip plot is surrounded on three sides with 2 sides covered with large conifers and 1 side has tall grass, young pine trees and apple trees, deer like to feed close to the tall conifers for safety and they will skirt the pine trees for security.. several smaller plots are more ideal then just 1 large plot.
  5. I love my Mathews Switchback XT and have had super success with it, its super quiet, fast and very accurate. Not because I have a Mathews , but they always appear to be on the forefront of innovation. Would love to get my hands on the new mathews Z7. Anyone try the Z7 yet?
  6. Very good info. Fairgame. Thats how I hunt my property, couple hundred yards off my plots and always go in from the backdoor. I never approach my plots or go near them in the morning. I can however hunt close to the plots in the afternoons. Thats how I got my 4 pointer with bow last year, I took him about 150 yards from the plot. My dad is the only one that actually hunts the plots all day, but that is during the rifle season.
  7. Yes, I love the rabe myself. We grow tons of it and eat alot of it. We plant extra just to make seed. My dad grows everything, he has huge gardens in brooklyn and upstate. BTW the deer love the rabe as well
  8. Its a Massey Feurgesson 1531- 33 HP Diesel, 4WD with loader, R4 industrial tires (rear tires loaded) and hydro transmission. That thing is a beast.....had tires 1/2 burried in muck...lock on the differential and she came right out. I was honestly amazed at what these machines can do, but you have to realize their limits.
  9. A6A6: Too cold upstate, fig trees have no chance. I would be hard pressed to see if anyone is successful with fig trees upstate. They grow beautifully in Brooklyn, my dad has both the purple and large white ones and they are absolutely delicious.
  10. Well all I can say is that I was going to take on my endeavor with just my quad and a few attachments, boy I would have been wrong and that would have been my worst mistake. So what I did do is went out and got myself a tractor, not that I knew it then but that has been one of my best investments. Not only does the tractor do my plots, but it keeps the driveway clear with the tons of snow we get. Even though my feilds may have been cultivated in the past, after I plowed and disked the two plots I took out about 20 buckets of rocks out with my loader.Something that would have taken forever (I literally mean forever) with my quad.A tractor just makes life alot easier. Also I cant stress enough that each piece of property is different and in my opinion if you dont get a soil test done and dont put into the ground what is needed then dont bother. Depending on the size of your plot, I wont lie in that its alot of work but I assure you you will sit in amazement when all things come together. Ask any question and I'll try to help to the best of my ability. Heres picture of tractor and me working on the turnip plot last year and then the results of that plot, unfortunatly turnips never got to big because contrary to what I have heard the deer devoured my turnips well before the first frost.
  11. Fairgame: I agree with you 100%, conversations around the butcher table are priceless. For me its all about spending quality time with the people you love.
  12. Very nice, even better that your documenting the entire build. Great looking start. Cant wait to see more pictures.
  13. Yeah, i put my cameras out early this year I couldnt wait any longer...lol.
  14. JC the GC: Thanks, I love posting pictures of plots and deer on my property makes me proud. Its amazing the gradification I get from seeing the results of all my hard labor.
  15. Burmjohn: I like many got caught up in the hype of comercial made blends, however my first ever food plots I did a test where I used 2.5 lbs of a comercial blend of clover/chikory mix that cost me $40 and my other plot I used a mix of ladino clover, birdsfoot treefoil, rape, red clover and yellow clover that cost me half that of the commercial blend and If I remember correctly I got 5 lbs of the agway mix . Both plots have and continue to work equally well, but there is absolutely no need for commercial blends. Just go to your local agway and if they dont have they can get any seed for you. If you dont have an agway near you, let me know and I can get any seed for you and then you can pick up in brooklyn. The plot in my pictures is the agway seed mix. The turnips (Pasja Turnips) I put in last year came from agway as well and my turnips (Purple Tops) this year will come from Agwayl, we will also be planting broccoli rabe from seeds that my father made.
  16. Not a problem, what I have learned I'm more then happy to pass along besides gives me a reason to talk about something I truely enjoy doing.
