I would have to say that using a walking tiller to turn a 1/4 acre is a huge undertaking, even more so if you have rocks. Rocks will destroy a tiller in no time. Unless you were talking about a tiller for a tractor, then that would work. At this point you would probably want to go with a Brassica plot. Get the plot tilled, add lime and fertilizer by mid to end of July and then plant your seed in the 1st week of August.Good luck.

I think with the ever rising prices of property and tax hikes, farmers and owners alike may look for hunting clubs or few people to pay to hunt to help subsidize their farming and or pay taxes. Years ago by me you could go anywhere and get permission, now everything is about the money and I think rightfully so. Its not cheap to buy, maintain and pay taxes on NY property. I felt the same way as you that is until I became an owner. Even though I hunt mostly on my property, I still have a couple parcels that I can hunt for nothing based upon relationships that I or my father have fostered over the years. You have to keep at it and keep asking and you never know. Dont give up. -
Very nice picture, makings of a real nice buck.

Not yet, I heard they are good. My father wants to try one this year, we will see. I have plenty by me. How did it taste Dom and how did you cook it?

New Field / Foot Plot plans
NYBowhunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
You can try rape which basically ia a type of Brassica that should be okay to plant in Sept., to be honest I have never planted anything that late in the year. I think rape might be fine at that time. -
Maybe this site should be named "Deer Hunting NY"

I'm also confused, I think there is a forum here for almost every facet of hunting. -
New Field / Foot Plot plans
NYBowhunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
You have until the 1st-2nd week of august to plant your Brassicas/turnips, preferably seeded by the 1st week. Thats assuming you have a good seedbed to start with, how do you plan on preparing your seedbed? You dont want brassica or clover seeds more then a 1/4 inch under the soil and I dont bury them at all, I top cast them and let the rain do the rest. That is why its important to have a well prepared seed bed, too many crevices or if they get buried too deep and you will loose the seed (they wont be able to push out of the ground), burry the fertilizer and lime too deep and they wont be utilized to the best of the plants ability. Lets talk before you get started. Let me know when your ready.I know you want to do this for this year, but you really dont want to waste all your hard work and money by rushing the process. But i do think if you have the right equipment you have plenty of time to get this done before August, the other question is you will need the time to get this all done, that is if your planting this year. Let me know. -
New Field / Foot Plot plans

Typically would plant your clover in April/May. Allow a month prior if you need to add lime, so the lime has a chance to get absorbed into the ground before you seed. Let me know when your ready for either this coming august or next April and we can discuss over the phone in detail, as there are details that I would need to explain and my typing is not the best and I'll be here all day typing. -
Pick up Trucks, SUV's, etc. - What are you driving?

Okay dont laugh, but with 4 little ones I'm cruising around in a chrysler Town and Country. Gave up a beautiful white ford expedition with 5.4lt. engine to get this family van, sacrafices of parenthood. It does have a roof rack to tie deer up..hehehehe. -
I used my local agway and their testing was pretty detailed, the test results will dictate how much lime you will need. You can put in a turnip / Brassica plot and you have until the first week of august to get the ground ready before you add your seed.Best of luck. Where will this field be situated?

Anyone hunt grouse or woodcock on this site?
NYBowhunter replied to Setters4life's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
After the deer season, in Jan. and Feb. I really enjoy getting out to do Grouse and rabbit hunting, took about 6 rabbits this year and a few grouse just walking around. Grouse populations have been pretty high by me for the past 10 years or so. Not uncommon to hear the males ruffing their feathers during the breeding season, on a good morning you can hear them all over. And they also scare the crap out of me when they flush when im on my way to my treestand in the early morning darkness. -
Hopefully in next couple weeks I can get up there. My father was just there, but I couldnt expect him to pull the SD cards for me, he was too busy mowing my clover plots.....hehehehe

Correction, the 8 pointer on the extreme right was taken on my friends place with my bow in 2007 in an antler restricted zone (Ellenville, NY). The horns are not that far off from the three other deer taken in my area, however the body size of the three other deer are exceptionally larger.Just something about large bodied deer that get me worked up as much as the horns. -
Whats a Big NY Buck? Whats an Average NY Buck?
NYBowhunter replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Seen some pictures of bucks taken in my area that were pretty impressive, but you need to be realistic and a 90-100" NY deer is pretty good in my book, one thing I like about my area being in a farmbelt and mountain area, the deer are huge. Not uncommon to take a 3 1/2 yr.old buck that weigh over 200lbs. I shot a 6 pointer years back that I swear went 250lbs live weight, we shot a few bucks that went 185 field dressed and that 6 pointer was much larger, unfortunately I never weighed him. Attached are pictures of bucks that I call trophies in my area. That huge bodied 6 pointer is 2nd from the left and to the right of him is a 10 pointer, other 2 on far right and far left are 8 ponters. Enjoy. -

ATV Spreader / Seeders suggestions?
NYBowhunter replied to JCTheGC's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Can buy a tow behind trailer at your local TSC, home depot, lowes for about $50-$75, I have used my trailer for the last 10 + years from hauling equipment, hauling bunch of kids...haha..., hauling fire wood, hauling lime etc.... The tow behind spreaders would take forever if you need to spread couple or more thousand lbs of lime and the spreaders are useless when it comes to brassicas and clover seeds being they are so tiny and besides you will probably loose alot of seeds with those large spreaders. Much more easier to control and see your broadcast from a handheld spreader. The only time I think the spreader would come in handy is for spreading your fertilizer, but even that I do by casting with my hand. -
Now a days I like country, Italian and classic rock. Go figure, coming from Brooklyn I grew up on disco, rap, raggae, hip hop-cant listen to it now.

ATV Spreader / Seeders suggestions?
NYBowhunter replied to JCTheGC's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
No real need for a spreader. Me and my father spread out 3000lbs of pelletized lime using my quad with a tow behind trailer and couple shovels, got all done in about an hour or so. Would have gone much slower with those small ATV spreaders. With spreading small seeds like brassicas and clover, you want to use a hand held spreader. Can walk a 1/2 acre and spread Brassica or clover seeds in 15 minutes or less with a hand held spreader. -
Fairgame, now that would be cool. Similar to what Moultrie offers with their live feed cameras.

Sound advise from others, your grip should be loose enough just to balance the bow in your hand.I usually have a couple fingers that dont even wrap around the grip but rather extend outward away from the grip. A loose grip is what works for me and allows me to be more consistent.

Do you pee in a bottle or right out of your stand
NYBowhunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
I have used both methods, but have shot some of my biggest bucks while letting it rip.
