New Field / Foot Plot plans
NYBowhunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Hey John, I have seen that video a while back. Seems impressive, but I dont have any experience with that product, but seems thats about one of a few options at this point. You would want to turn your ground, disk it then get the seedbed as flat as possible, then add your lime and fertilizer and then you can harrow the fertilizer and lime into the ground. The key is to get the lime and fertilizer to go down into your seedbed only a couple inches so they can be properly utilized by your plants. You can make your own harrow and save yourself alot of money by getting a hold of an old piece (approx.4'wide X 8' long) chain link fence that is weighted down with some heavy lumber. I have some old huge heavy floor joists screwed into a chain link fence that I can drag behind my quad or tractor. If you want shoot me a PM with your number and I can explain. Are there any farmers nearby that you can pay to prep the plot for you, lots of people take that route.I helped one other guy by answering questions, however the major work like turning the ground, disking, adding lime was done by a farmer. -
Wow amazing pictures.

New Field / Foot Plot plans

Yes clover can be planted in spring or Fall, however I never planted a fall clover plot. I would think if you planted in the fall, you will see the best results of that clover plot next spring and thereafter. -

Not always the case, I have had deer dig through a foot of snow to get at the clover underneath. My clover field looked like a bomb went off, there were huge holes in the snow everywhere. If at all possible its a good idea to have a clover plot and a late fall (brassica ) plot.My intentions are to create a healthier deer herd and I'm not overly concerned at my surrounding areas. I'm surrounded by farms and Ag, I dont let that dictate what I grow. Lately there has been standing corn well into the gun season in nearby farms and if I let what I gow get dictated by whats around me then I would have no need to grow anything. -
Maybe this site should be named "Deer Hunting NY"

Welcome aboard buddy. -
Iam more prone to believe there are cycles in small game populations. If it were true with coyotes and hawks being the cause of low small game populations then my area would be void of small game as we have high populations of coyote, fox and hawks and contrary the rabbits and grouse populations in my area continue to rise.

I would have to say that using a walking tiller to turn a 1/4 acre is a huge undertaking, even more so if you have rocks. Rocks will destroy a tiller in no time. Unless you were talking about a tiller for a tractor, then that would work. At this point you would probably want to go with a Brassica plot. Get the plot tilled, add lime and fertilizer by mid to end of July and then plant your seed in the 1st week of August.Good luck.

I think with the ever rising prices of property and tax hikes, farmers and owners alike may look for hunting clubs or few people to pay to hunt to help subsidize their farming and or pay taxes. Years ago by me you could go anywhere and get permission, now everything is about the money and I think rightfully so. Its not cheap to buy, maintain and pay taxes on NY property. I felt the same way as you that is until I became an owner. Even though I hunt mostly on my property, I still have a couple parcels that I can hunt for nothing based upon relationships that I or my father have fostered over the years. You have to keep at it and keep asking and you never know. Dont give up. -
Very nice picture, makings of a real nice buck.

Not yet, I heard they are good. My father wants to try one this year, we will see. I have plenty by me. How did it taste Dom and how did you cook it?

You can try rape which basically ia a type of Brassica that should be okay to plant in Sept., to be honest I have never planted anything that late in the year. I think rape might be fine at that time. -
Maybe this site should be named "Deer Hunting NY"

I'm also confused, I think there is a forum here for almost every facet of hunting. -

You have until the 1st-2nd week of august to plant your Brassicas/turnips, preferably seeded by the 1st week. Thats assuming you have a good seedbed to start with, how do you plan on preparing your seedbed? You dont want brassica or clover seeds more then a 1/4 inch under the soil and I dont bury them at all, I top cast them and let the rain do the rest. That is why its important to have a well prepared seed bed, too many crevices or if they get buried too deep and you will loose the seed (they wont be able to push out of the ground), burry the fertilizer and lime too deep and they wont be utilized to the best of the plants ability. Lets talk before you get started. Let me know when your ready.I know you want to do this for this year, but you really dont want to waste all your hard work and money by rushing the process. But i do think if you have the right equipment you have plenty of time to get this done before August, the other question is you will need the time to get this all done, that is if your planting this year. Let me know. -

Typically would plant your clover in April/May. Allow a month prior if you need to add lime, so the lime has a chance to get absorbed into the ground before you seed. Let me know when your ready for either this coming august or next April and we can discuss over the phone in detail, as there are details that I would need to explain and my typing is not the best and I'll be here all day typing. -
Pick up Trucks, SUV's, etc. - What are you driving?

Okay dont laugh, but with 4 little ones I'm cruising around in a chrysler Town and Country. Gave up a beautiful white ford expedition with 5.4lt. engine to get this family van, sacrafices of parenthood. It does have a roof rack to tie deer up..hehehehe. -
I used my local agway and their testing was pretty detailed, the test results will dictate how much lime you will need. You can put in a turnip / Brassica plot and you have until the first week of august to get the ground ready before you add your seed.Best of luck. Where will this field be situated?

Anyone hunt grouse or woodcock on this site?
NYBowhunter replied to Setters4life's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
After the deer season, in Jan. and Feb. I really enjoy getting out to do Grouse and rabbit hunting, took about 6 rabbits this year and a few grouse just walking around. Grouse populations have been pretty high by me for the past 10 years or so. Not uncommon to hear the males ruffing their feathers during the breeding season, on a good morning you can hear them all over. And they also scare the crap out of me when they flush when im on my way to my treestand in the early morning darkness. -
Hopefully in next couple weeks I can get up there. My father was just there, but I couldnt expect him to pull the SD cards for me, he was too busy mowing my clover plots.....hehehehe
