have you tested any of the old batteries for how long they will stay on?
-
gotta be careful with any of these believing the batteries are fine. I replace mine every year for one reason. I want them to burn as long as possible when trying to recover a deer. They are great to see the impact but their true shining (pun intended) is to glow and assist in a recovery. I like the firenocks options in how they light and burn. I bought the ones that burn constant for 48 hours, then they switch to a blink every 5 seconds until the battery wears out. That function isn't available anymore. The current big game hunting set up is solid light for up to 21 days.

The prohibitions contained in subparagraph 2 of paragraph a above shall not apply to: (1) The owner or lessee of the dwelling house, or members of his immediate family actually residing therein, or a person in his employ, or the guest of the owner or lessee of the dwelling house acting with the consent of said owner or lessee, provided however, that nothing herein shall be deemed to authorize such persons to discharge a firearm within five hundred feet, a long bow within one hundred fifty feet, or a crossbow within two hundred fifty feet of any other dwelling house, or a farm building or farm structure actually occupied or used, or a school building or playground, public structure, or occupied factory or church; In that same spirit of the law I can see a permission falling in this section.

firenocks are about $60 for 3 My set up is like tossing out a $50 bill every time I let one loose in the woods. I took 5 deer withe the same arrow though so it isn't too bad.

are you using the same ones on both?
-
they are not cheap as Chas said but he firenocks will NOT go on like that. it is an internal inertia switch that is triggered at the release. Then simply hold point up and nock down and tap on something and it turns off.

Seth, It really depends on what you want to get out of it. Membership get you access to branch education events. We have habitat initiatives that members take part in. In our specific branch we are hoping for a spring roll out where branch Officers, volunteers, members attending the banquet and members in general can have access to 4 wheeler size food plotting equipment at a very nominal cost. Specifically planter and lime spreader all set up on a trailer. New York has just put another member on the staff. He is a young forest specialist that is available as a resource to members in evaluating and best utilizing their habitat. NY is actually now 7th for membership in the nation. That is a huge increase and speaks to the strides made here. Depending on where you are located the branches have different focuses. The membership is National and NOT to a specific branch. In reality the membership special is worth it for the magazine alone. (83 cents and issue). The other thing that QDMA puts out that is well worth the read is it's annual report. This is actually available to anyone. https://www.qdma.com/about/whitetail-reports/ Members, volunteers, officers....your level of participation can dictate what you get out of it. $5 is a cheap way to dip your toe in the water and see what it is about in detail.

They make a deer sound like a marching band going through the woods. I have never seen such a large animal make no noise moving through the woods. Any I have had an encounter with was all sight based. I never heard one of them.

I'd rather pay and have it work AND not having to take things apart to use them. I've had the same 3 for 5 years. Just new batteries. Annual price isn't bad. I get a charge out of some guys I see that spend over a grand on a bow, expensive stands, sights, releases and then shoot junk arrows or broadheads. Cheap money in my book with a good arrow, good broadhead and a quality lighted nock. Im not saying this is you Chas.

Ever use Firenocks?
-
35 years hunting up north and took 2 without bait. One while I was driving woods to my hunting partners and one while just sitting on watch. Both byproducts of deer hunting.

My first year in Ontario I spent 40 hours over a pile and never saw a bear. it was hit between my first morning and evening watch and then never again. I am going to Quebec in the spring and thinking about taking my bow. (compound, not the recurve...lol) they have stands at around 20 yards at some. I think that would be a rush.

I can see how a maturing forest (little browse and food for the deer) and increase in broken up land by development could concentrate populations in areas with AG or fringe cover. That puts the population where it can be seen easily and in many case not hunted easily.

They don't make the muff I use anymore. It was replaced by this one. To me the neoprene is KEY. I have been in driving rain and my hands stay dry in there. Having the front accessory pocket is very nice to have other things you want to protect from the weather. https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/delta-waterfowl-deluxe-hand-warmer?a=1948788
