  1. I remember a study the DU did way back...70's 80's. I was not a duck hunter then and pretty young so I don't recall the detials but they collected duck wings to test for lead contamination. I think they were doing it to oppose the regulation to go to steel. I don't recall them finding the contamination they are claiming here.
  2. Mike...so you are for green shot for all sports even Dove hunting?
  3. Just FYI. it has nothing to do with the distance to the deer or even the shot path. it is the point of discharge. you can be standing at 501' and shoot a deer that is at 400...assuming you have permission for both spots.
  4. All the corn around me is still standing. The beans have been down since before Bow.in our block. The ears are very small on the stuff I have seen.
  5. I think owning is still the best way becasue you have total control. That said I couldn't afford property and you never really know how good the hunting is until you are in there...so my Father and I lease. You are basically paying their taxes or a portion of them. I went the route of leasing from a timber company because they really haev no desire to do anything on the land other than manage it for timber. A farmer could still be using it while you lease it. Must know all the details of the lease. The company we lease from if on this site (Cotton-Hanlon). THey have opportunities for leasers to build a small cabin on the properties after a few years. you post it and use it all year. They have been great to lease from and Bob O'Brien has been wonderful to deal with. There are rules but in a Readre's Digest version .....don't break any laws, don't mess with their trees and don't fued with the neighbors. The lease terms are3 year periods for us. (And while ours has gone up in price every lease period) It is fairly reasonable. We lease 110 acres and I think it is around $2,400 this lease period coming up in January. Google them I know they have southern teir property but I don't know how far west they go. Good luck
  6. I shoot 777 in my Encore. I can load 3 shots 250 gr TC Shockwaves. the 4th won't go without way too much effort. the difference between shot 1 and shot #2 is 4" of additional drop. SHot #3 drops an additional 3" is I don't clean. I think it is important to do that exercise because if you need a quick follow up you don't want to take the tiem to swab. I know 777 are dirtier but I just really like the conveinience fo the pellets.
  7. Very nice. WOuld make a perfect reloading room...lol
  8. And that 348 with that bullet would handle a hard quartering to shot with ease and anchor tthe deer. It has ballistics that will allow penetration to the vitals even through a shoulder bone. That was my point. A 223 will not have as easy of a time pulling that shot off. I bullet may not make it into the vitals with ranges over 100 yards. This thread is about a hunter getting ONE deer rifle. Inside of his parameters a 223 does not fit. (and he already has one of those) 22's can kill deer. But i think we are doing a disservice if we are selling them as anything over a marginal deer caliber.
  9. I have never had that problem with the Sierra Game kings. Out of the 270 and the 30-06 I have shot them from 10 to 250.THey have worked well for me on bear and Caribou. What bullet blew up at close range on you?
  10. That is bullet selection for the ranges you will be hunting.
  11. I thought back then a rifle had to be 25 caliber or larger for deer in NY. If it is all about placement and energy don't matter...why not just carry one of those 17 caliber center fires?
  12. I know you were...as was I But one thing that is not based on personal experience it ballistics. That is science and math. Ballistically the 223 in inferior to the 30/30 in the categories that count (aside from bullet drop). It is all about energy and the 223 doesn't stack up compared to the cartrige you don't like.
  13. It amy be the case in the shots you have taken in your life but I do not agree with your statement in general. I wouldn't hesitate taking a quartering to shot right through the shoulder with the 270 or the 308...or my 12 guage for that mater. I wouldn't try it with my 223 though. I certainly wouldnt try it on a bear. As in DOc's posts he already has a 223 for varmits so I expect he isn't looking for another. And like any round. the 30/30 is a great round inside it's limits. If it is so sub standard then most modest handgun cartriges should probably be shelved as well.
  14. Between loud construction equipment and guns I am probably a few years away from needing some help. On the bench I use plugs and muffs now
  15. 2 words.....Lead Sled...lol Worth every penny when dealing with the 12 guage or heavy rifles.
  16. FYI if anyone is interested in reduced recoil loads for reloading some popular calibers, I suggest viewing this sheet for H4895. http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/H4895%20Reduced%20Rifle%20Loads.pdf
  17. LOL. I was actually tryign to find a 7mm-08 when the deal on the 308 came up. I couldn't pass it up and once I found a good but fairly cheap 130 gr bullet in the 308 I went with it.

  19. Keeps bringing me back tothe 308. short action i you are leaning to a bolt gun. Military ammo is available. components hae a wide variety. It is a proven parent case. you can load up or down. what other rifles are you reloading for now Doc?
  20. Yes you need a permit in NY. those shots wereon a benck and a bipod. the gun is cpable...if I am ...lol
  21. Doc. This is out of the 308 pistol at 100 yards. 1" squares. It would have been better if I had done my part..lol
  22. Doc. I would suggest the .308 Winchester. reloading components are easy to get and there is a wide range of bullets. I have a reduced recoil load I use in my Encore pistol and i could shoot the pistol all day and not have a sore hand. Groups great to 200 yards. you can load up to loads capable of Elk / moose or bear.
  23. I have had a lot of enjoyment in the reloading the past year. I am reloading 4 out of the 5 calibers I shoot. Iwas able to take a bear with the -06 reloads and hope this southern opener will have a deer fall to the 308 reloads for my pistol. It is a hobby in itself. I hope Santa brings a chronograph this Christmas.
