Spiker. I don't believe that meets DEC's definition of a legal crossbow. I think there is an issue with the limb length -

The hunting season is long enough and we should be content with its length. I would bet that any attempts to lengthen the season would be met with severe oposition and polarize the anti hunting community that much more. I would bet if it were proposed to lengthen it ....it might meet resistence. I think a pull back of an earlier bow start to Oct 1st might go fairly un-noticed because of the hunting that goes on in the state in that time frame anyway. -

It is a tough rope to walk. I have buddies that snowmobile...their trails are closed until we are done with deer season. -

I think that is a perfect way to approach it because it leaves it up to choice...your choice to manage the property as you see fit and the choice of those hunting with you ...if they want to use one....they can choose to go elsewhere or comply -

OK, genius....now that we have handloaded our cartridges so they launch different weight bullets at the same velocity......calculate the rest of the equation and derive the answer to the question. Which slows faster (falls more?) Hint: Consider a tractor trailer and a honda civic, both going 65mpf on a flat and straight interstate. We simultaneous slip both into neutral....which coasts farther? off the ballistic charts Muzzle/100/200/300/400/500 180 grain-2750/2550/2359/2176/2001/1835 150 grain-2750/2552/2361/2197/2005/1840 throw a pile of variables in like Ballistic coeff. sectional density, bulet constructiion....much the same as an arrow. broadhead design...shaft construction and size...fletchings. It isn't a lab out in the woods and the comments on how a crossbow bolt drops is accurate...science or practical experiece...it does.... -

Want to bet on that? Newton didn't know squat about firearms or cartridge's. I can make a lighter bullet the same velocity as a heavier one. The bottom line is: if it has a string and limbs it's a BOW. LOL...I agree bpb....only thing I can comment to that..."no child left behind"...sad really -

Arrow, I wanted to make sure you didn't miss this post since you didn't comment on it. Was this the survey you were refering to? -

You are not getting it. The heavier bullet cannot be launched at the same MV from my .44...it will always start slower. But you can learn something from gun ballistics. Look at the rate with which the two weights are shedding velocity....which loses its velocity more quickly? That's right....the LIGHTER one. We are talking about the physical principle of inertia....bodies in motion tend to stay in motion, etc. That Newton was one smart dude. I totally get it. both bullets can be fired at the exact same velocity...I guarantee it. the powder charge would be the variable. just like the poundage setting on a bow. a lighter arrow and a heavier one can be launched at the same velocity from teh same bow. -

single shot VS multiple....breech loaded and the season was set aside for the primitive style to start with. It has evolved with the inclusion of inlines and then allowing optics use....that season has undergone changes to meet the needs of the State and the participants. Much like the bow season will be doing with the inclusion of the crossbow -

The survey was sent out to ALL license holders, not just bowhunters. Pure fabrication. Pure lie. Do some research. I have....me....I never got one and I don't know anyone that has? did they pass them out at a NYB meeting? -

No. If the two different weight projectiles are launched at the same velocity the lighter one sheds its velocity more quickly. If we were to shoot a light arrow and a heavy arrow from the same bow, the light arrow would be launched at a higher velocity....but that is not what we are talking about here. let's make this simple.....pull up a ballistic chart for your 44RM. look at a heavy bullet and a lighter one with the same or close muzzle velocity, then check the down range ballistics -

Now I think you better check ballistics to back that up. A lighter projectile will be faster down range. the heavier one will retain more energy but will be slower -

If the survey you have refered to is the DEC 2009 survey...let me recap 53% believe crossbows shoule be legalized that includes 53% that identified them selves as bowhunters and 54% of other hunters. there was only 32% of bowhunters that said it shouldn't be legalized This held consistent for the specific question on wheter it should be included when any bow was a legal implement 53% legal for bowhunting When questioned on use only 21% of bowhunters said they definitely would not use one. 43% were in some form of YES Was this the survey you were refering to? http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/deersurvppt2010.pdf -

Great point G-man. I have shot both and I would never take the crossbow up to hunt with over my compound....as long as I was able to draw it. I have more confidence in my compound and it is by far smoother and much quieter. -

It is not surprising that gun hunters wanted extra advantage. But, according to surveys, there is no desire for crossbows from bowhunters. I would bet that those that segregate and consider them selves "bowhunters" would oppose it. those that bow hunt and consider them selves hunters would not have the problem. I can only hope that the number that are in the first group is not that high. I know you took offense when the previous post called your attitud elitest but you have to be able to see how a position such as this can come across this way. Those that voice the opposition seem to have this in common with the posts you have made and it seems to be a common thread with NYB members. You commented that NYB was fighting to preserve bowhunting.....not sure of the exact quote....I would thinnk that a group that has it's roots in NY's hunting history would want to see it fostered....as a whole. Does anyone know the exact number of members in NYB. I am curious how it relates to the entire bow hunting licenses issued? -

At the expense of bowhunters?...and there in lies the problem....we are hunters...the attitude to seperate us so totally bu what we hunt with will hurt the sport more than any included weapon ever could -

Doe, there may be an initial increase for the ones that gotta try a new thing and buy into the hype about there effectiveness. themn there will be a declline...and really nice used ones for sale cheap...lol. I heard that happened in Ohio. I think the major influx would be from hunters who physically can't bow hunt due to disabilities. And that proposed bill would encompass them. Will it bring new hunters in or some back....maybe a few back but chances are those folks are gun hunting and some would migrate back to bow hunting. I have one old hunting partner of ours that would be in those ranks because he has a condition that makes it so he can not tolerate the cold. he gets out very little gun hunting anymore....mostly up north early season. He would be able to participate is this was passed. so that is one...lol
