Shorten the NY Gun Season?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Helderberg Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
well that was a very soft underhand pitch I threw you...I was hoping you could hit that one out of the park...lol -
And that is a topic for another thread. I would agree that the costs are high and they shouldn't be. the counrtryclubs we are building and the amenities that are afforded the prisioners are crazy. I really believe we need to go back to the cahin gangs and license plate factories. I think it is in Michican there is a precast concrete company that specializes in making prison cells....know who the labor is.....the prisoners....now that really gives me a warm fuzzy

best gun to shoot rabbits
Culvercreek hunt club replied to nonnie's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
If I am jumping brushpiles myself it is my .410....if I am hedgerow walking on a nice sunny warm winter day it is the .22.....for cottontails with dogs it is the 20...and for whites it is always the 12 -
Oh, May be a little too far west for any suggestions I have. I know of a great preserve and they train year round because they use chuckars as well but it is in Bloomfield NY, She specializes in Springers and GSH's. No frills and great folks

I even have a better analogy-----I am betting there were as many deaths and probably more injuries due to treestand accidents. Won't know til final numbers come out. Do we legislate and ban the use of treestands?

Shorten the NY Gun Season?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Helderberg Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Correct. Shortening the season would drop the pressure by quite a bit and the deer would be out and about more during the daylight hours. If you can only get out gun hunting 2 or 3 days, then pick up a ML or a bow and up the time you have in the woods. Its a pretty simple concept really. I actually started bow hunting for just that reason, to get more time in the woods. I started ML hunting for the same reason this year too. great as long as you are physically capable of bowhunting...no so much if you aren't -
spike,4pt,6pt, all 1.5 Yr old----genetics?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to arrow nocker's topic in Deer Hunting
It is probably a two way street though...right?...Might be a simple view...but if some bucks are leaving your place....wouldn't others be coming in? Is this an evolutionary adaption to avoid inbreeding? -
Not to bust your chops....but did you confront them on how they set up teh drive and why they would accept that as a safe shot?. The biggest part of my post and I probably dind't make it clear, is we need to police the ones we hunt with. If you see someone doing somethign stupid....call them on it...question them. Then toss them to the curb...lol

Just realized this about your regular season tag
Culvercreek hunt club replied to First-light's topic in Muzzleloaders
had a couple threads before the season started talking about this. really you could fill every tag you had and never shoot a buck -
Jim, you looking for a floor mount or wall mount?
-
one thing I forgot to mention. With a littel research you can usually do a nice combo hunt for not that much extra...maybe add a pronghorn...or yotes or really step up and do a elk/deer combo...lol

any of the states out there have areas of good hunting. I would start with what type of hunt and their expectations on harvest.
-
And I am betting if you do include a new person in the group...friend....child becoming a hunter....They are instructed on what is acceptable and you put those people in the watches with the least possibility of a shooting incident'.

you can't fix stupid! and no law change will make these fols that don't identify their target any safer. I have participated in drives and over the years they have been very productive and very safe for us. We don't do it much anymore...more of a still hunt to guys still on watch kind of thing now. I am not for imposing any more regulations and trying to legislate to majority for the inability of the stupid few. What I think needs to happen is these clowns that shoot other unters should be strung up and do some serious jail time. Then ehy MIGHT think about what they are doing. I would think their mourning and remorse would be a big weight on them but if they aren't smart or moral enough to exercise the required caution they probably are not affected as much as they should be by their actions. The problem is the "hunters" themselves that do the shooting and to some extent the group they are hunting with. ou know the guys you are hunting with...or should...and they chose to include a clown like this in their group. We must police ourselves. Driving game is a very old and proven method and tradition. It has been done safely for hundreds of years. Changing the laws due to the actions of a few is just not right. We all see stupid drivers...agressive making unsafe lane changes...not leaving proper distances...drinking and driving. Bicycles and walking are far safer and if there is an accident doing one of those they are far less serious. Do we legislate that cars be removed from the roads?

swamps are hard. the terrain differences are much more subtulie that in other big lots. a 1' differece in topography can mean the difference in an area holding deer or not. That goes for above the water line and below. and the latter is much harder to find without actually putting you feet on it. Identifying travel routs in a swap, for me is best done after season. If you can luck out and the water is not frozen but the deer are still hanging in their safe havens after the season, you can let them show you the routes. I have had luck following their tracks then to see the easiest ways in and out of their areas. the open water is key for me doing this becasue once it is frozen they can easily take any route they wish.

Now this is a Christmas greeting!

I know...should have been at lest 5 in my book. -
Jim, you really have to narrow it down a bit because there are so many variables. are you flexible in when you can go are you just looking to hunt or are you wanting to focus on a trophy do you want guided...semi guided or a DIY hunt what weapon do you want to use they all factor onto where, when and how much buddy of mine entered into a lottery I think it was Utah...wanted to ML hunt and wanted to DIY. the area held huge deer and had just been reopened to hunting. Saw a lot but got skunked. which he was OK with because he wanted the trophy. All said and done I think he had about 3-4,--- into it

squirrels how to hunt them
Culvercreek hunt club replied to nonnie's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
agree with the guys here....movement can be your worst enemy. I have noticed that it takes about a half hour after I get in my deer stand to start to see squirrel movement again. I have also had luck using a chatter call as I approach an area. sometimes they will give away there position to see what made the noise or even call right back. Mine looks like a duck call with a rubber ball on the end you tap to force air through it. -
Shorten the NY Gun Season?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Helderberg Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I don't see a problem with the season the way it is. By switching weapons I we can hunt from October 1st...assuming you don't have last years tag.....until about the week before Christmas If you think the deer numbers are down on the land you hunt....get out and do a little leg work to get access to new property. The days of deer running over your boot tops every time you went out wasn't the ideal situation. It was a problem...in herd size. A herd managed to controlled and ideal numbers won't have the kind of sighting numbers we have grown accustom to. My view -
