No idea. Only tape that was on it was when my buddy measured the inside spread at 19". I am dropping it off at he taxidermist tonight so I will try to measur them. I hae never really been into scoring but I can't imagine he will doo really great with the short brow and one brow broken. the symetry isn't too bad except fot the G4 on the right is couple inches smaller than the left. My buddy wants to score it but I don't think he will catch up with me b4 I drop it off

Congrats VJP...very nice bear. the one my fater got last year was the same size. it makes a beautiful rug. and unlike all of our other mounts....you can get your money back out of a bear rug. If you plan on wall displaying it let me know I have an article I can send you with directions on how to do it so you don't have to depend on the little loops they give you and the rug lays very flat with no sags. agin...very nice job

In the Z it is open during ML in the appropriate areas. My father shot a bear during Northern ML last year ...It was his first year with a ML. after I heard him shoot I called him on the radio to ask if he got anything....he was a nervous wreck and trying to get a second shot loaded....hands shaking and the whole bit...lol. it went right down but a very calm day....and while that white cloud was hanging there between him and the bear blocking his view he was thinking ..." I wonder how it would take that bear to cover the 65 yards"....lol. The bear had dropped in it's tracks though.

Well if I shoot one you can have it...lol

And you should be!...gloat away...you deserve it

I bet the DEC would have the same response as the architech that was telling me the raised bed leach field was dumping drinking grade water into the lake. It was on a project I was working on ..the outflow from the leach bed ran down a very nice looking water ladder into a stream leading to the lake....I bent over...dipped a cup and offered it to him to drink...he turned around and walked away. I bet those DEC that said it was ok wouldn't sereve it to their kids.

Sorry all guess I ws suppose to post this here in a new thread. Well I finally got it done. I had to take the long route to the stand I was going to hunt because there were so many does in the field along the trail I normally take. I made it in and didn't bump any that I knew of. It was a beautiful morning to sit...very light breeze in my face...field at my back and over looking a creek bottom that is often used as a travel corridor. the opposite hill across teh creek is heavily covered with saplings and very thick. No movement until 10 am when an eight pointer came walking left to right up the creek. His rack was just at the ears with times about 5 inches long. I had passed him during archery but I have had a very slow season with nothing on the ground yet. He would be coming out of the thicket in the bottom at about 50 yards and that is a chip shot with the ML. I was having the shoot him...no wait....argument in my head and was really paying attention to him movements. He was 5 steps from hitting the opening and I was going to have to decide quickly. I noticed he kept stopping and looking up over his left shoulder...up the hill into the sapling covered hill. ...step....look back. step....look back. since we had 100% snow cover I picked up movemnt at the top of the sapling hill. 3 deer came trotting left to right with another following behind. they turned and headed into the creek bottom and I thought they would be crossing and coming into the field behind me. This would drag the 8 out of the cover he was in. When they hit the creek bottom the 8 bolted towards them and they ras into thick cover as far to the right as I can see. I could see them moving but there was no shots. I went form very excited to "I can't believe this happened" in seconds. I heard a loud low grunt on top of the hill and a deer came trotting down. I pulled up and this must have been the 4th deer that was trailing the other 3. I cranked up my scope to 9 and could see rack coming down the hill. Since I hunt ofter from this stand I knew the only shot I would have if he trailed the 3 does and the 8 was at the creek at 140 yards. I cocked the encore and steadied into the opening and he cam in at a quartering away. click....bang....big poof of white smoke and I can't see anything. I reach for my speed loaders and there is a buck running right to laeft right domn the creek bottom. I get loaded ...he stops....it isn't the buck I shot at. It was the original 8. Where is MY buck. I see movemnt where I shot and the buck is trying to get up. Shot number two on him and I can't tell if I hit him....he jumps up on his feet and my heart sinks. He trotts up the hill and heads towards a golden rod field. by the time I am reloaded he is out of sight. I regroup and get out of the stand. I call my buddiy and tell him to go out and get the wheeler....I still think I got a good hit on him and we will need it for recovery. The blood trail is great and I am looking at blood 50-75 feet ahead of me ...not at my feet. across the golden rod field....into the connecting hardwods...into the flooded timber. Now I am getting worried. I tell my buddy where to meet me and we meet up. I am very nervous because now we are near property that is heavily hunted and I am betting someone will end up shooting this deer. Plus we are coming up to a road and if he crosses...he is lost. It is very hard to make a quiet track and I am worried about bumping the deer...that darn sqeaky packy snow. about 200 yards and there is very heavy blow down and I do not see any blood out in front or any side of it. "he has to be in there" I slowly approach and just as I see the tips of the tines he bolts from the bed. I was ready and put him down just as he hit his feet. My buddy went for the wheeler and I may have just hurt my effort to get him to wait on bigger deer. the two of us had all we could do to lift this guy on the back rack. After a few pics of course. He is convinced now it is much easier to shoot small deer....both our backs are killing us today...lol He got a nice 1-1/2 YO seven in the afternoon and I still did not get to fill a doe tag. I have included a pic of the two together....9 point----broke of a G1...19 inch inside spread.....scaled at 185 pounds dressed. Oh...as a note...either I jerked the trigger or he hesitated. the first shot was top of shoulder and into the neck. When I put my finger in the hole I could feel the neck bones. 1/2 inch lower he would not have moved. the second shot was a bit back but hit the liver. when I was caping him I noticed a nickle size scabbed up hole in his ear. It is not a tear from a fight...a clean hole with ear missing. either he had one of those peircings done or some hunter came very close to a head shot on him....hate to say this...but I am happy he missed I couldn't be happier. I think this is also one of the deer we had on the trail cams in August. the date o the trail cam pic is wrong...lost the book and can't get it to change...lol

What is wrong with hunters these days
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Caveman's topic in General Hunting
I agree...don't read any attitude in my comments. I am all about choice. was just pointing out what the regs use to be and MY preference in caliber choice. I just think that folks that are not familiar with all the round and caliber options out there might sell them selves short it what they CAN shoot. If someone handed them a 300 winmag to get a feel for a rifle I can understand their hesitation but a moderate round with a moderate wieght bullet I don't think kickes more than a 20 shotgun with a slug. my 2 cents -

the reduced recoil rounds are great. I have shot a few to try them out in my Brother in laws gun...what a difference and not that much loss in ballistics....at our normal hunting ranges anyway. I know they will take them down VJP...just stating my preference . I have a 22-250 but wouldn't carry it for deer. I know it will do it and always thought about trying it but just seems like too small of a bullet to me. I have always looked at low end energy for whitetail at around 1000 ft-ps. what would you consider adequate energy to effectively kill a deer sized animal? -
Great buck NY ...nice to see things come together even if it is late in the season.

personally I like to see a 1000 ft-ps. of energy...that would make the .223 a 100 yard gun...round depending. I wuld really like to see 25 caliber or higher. with the managed recoil rounds anyone can find a gun to shoot comfortable in that calliber or above. The .243 has taken alot of deer though and a well placed bullet inside most NY hunting ranges it will work fine. Like any weapon...works within it's range...in the proper practiced hands -
where do you hunt that you see devastation?

well guys hate to contradict some here but there are two cases that CAN get either sex permits. Orchards and tree farms/nurseries. they are goot for does prior to the season and the bucks can only be taken once rubbing damage starts. There are TONS of hoops to jump through to get these but I hunted on them for a nursery and theyy we specific that either can be taken. This one nursery had $75,000 just rubbing dammage. whole rows of 1" caliber trees scared and no market value. I have never heard of them extending to include after the regular season though. I would confirm that if you are interested. And my 2 cents and the biggest reason I do not do those permits anymore. I really hated some of the guys that were filling this were the drop them ...strip the backstraps and drag the rest to the hedgerow types. I protested and was told by the owner they didn't care...so I was out.

I do apologize. My mistake. Of course a .17 caliber is a rimfire. I must have had a brain-cramp It happens every so often. :-[ Doc I don't think you were totally wrong Doc. I seem to recall there were or are still a 17 that is center fire. way undersized for sure. I alos remember years ago that the regulation for a deer hunting round was 25 caliber or larger. so teh 22's ...243...and such could not be used. -
Since you seem fairly new to this I woudl suggest getting a round that you can comfortably shoot---easily find ammo and will do the job. All the rifles here that are mentioned will do it. I would suggest what you plan to do with the rifle. if it will be a hunting rifle and you will only put 2 to 3 boxes of ammo through it a year between sighting and hunting....probably any will do. If you intend on a lot of range time as well as hunting...check out the ammo prices and make sure the prices ranges are there. When I got my very first rifle to hunt deer I wanted on e that I could cheaply shoot and that I KNEW would have easy ammo access. That is why I picked the 30-06. I was shooting a bolt so military surplus ammo is available...hunting rounds can be had at probably every gun shop in North America. Do a little home work and you ca't go wrong. Good luck

An AWESOME weekend!

Conograts on the tests and the deer...sounds like a wonderful fall! -
I chuckle every time I see them in line at Gander Mtn. and the use of anything as a cover scent or scent attractor is NOT illegal. the line is drawn when you are using it to entice deer to feed on something eitther natural or unnatural to them. spray it on your clothes or boots is fine.....unless you sit in your blind and let them eat your boots ..lol

Are you bow fishing for carp?...LOL

I don't know how big it was but if it was under 3" it technically was a legal deer...assuming he had a DMP -
Damn, WNY. sorry to hear this. I responded on the other thread because i was on my phone and it is a pain getting to threads I haven't responded too. Good luck man I hope you get another run at him

I have always said hunters choice Steve....to be honest....glad that first smaller 8 made my mind up for me or I might not have gotten that buck... My wife is FIRMLY against taking of big bucks....BUt that has more to do with the Taxidermy bills I think....lol. Headed there after work with the rack and cape
