New to bear hunting...looking for advice
Culvercreek hunt club replied to G-Man's topic in Bear Hunting
Typically a sow without cubs or a boar will be covering quite a bit of territory. Food sources will be the key if there is a resident bear. 500-600 acres is a great size area to hunt but depending on the make up...could be small to hold a huntable bear. Most taken in NY are a byproduct of deer hunting. A very underlooked attractant for bear is standing corn. On the property I hunt up north the farmer won't put corn in these 2 field anymore because of the loss to the bears. They had about 5 acres layed flat in the middle out of the 30 that were planted...lol one attractant I have used and seen used to some very good success...Honey burns. that sicky sweet smell carries like you wouldn't believe. If you are able and have the good fortune of some snow...tracking is probably the best bet. -

What is the kill range of a crossbow?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to First-light's topic in Bow Hunting
from what i have found and read it appears the general opinion is 25-40 ft/pounds for KE at impact for deer sized game. that really isn't all that much -
How many members do you guys take and do you have a cabin? We only have 110 acres but sets against 2500 of state land

If you are in a union I didn't think you could find your own work? They would have come down on us hard when I was in the operating engineers

I know probably most of the guys going down there are not fans of drives but it sure looks like some of those deltas would make some very nice still hunting to a couple buddies. Would that be a high fence hunt since the cliffs are that high...lol We use to hunt the islands of the Mohawk river this way when I was younger and had lots of free time. 2 cars...drop in the canoe...hit the up stream end of an island and drop one guy off.....the other swung down to the downstream end and got on watch. The deer stacked on those thing in late gun season was crazy. The flats of the river use to get hunted pretty hard and the deer would just take a small swim over to the islands to camp out

How much KE do you believe is required to take a deer? From what i have seen the bolts are at a higher Gr/inch than arrows. If the broad heads are comparable as well as the fletchings I hae seen them be damn near the same weight as what most shoot in the compounds. If the speed is similiar and the weight is the same the KE would be the same. I am not a big fan of long range shooting but I think you are really underesting the effective range of both weapons -
mine actually smokes better in the cold. I wish it had a bit smaller burner. I have to leave the damper full open in the summer to get the temp down to where i want it. This lets a lot of the smoke out. In the winter you can leave it all sealed up. Once it comes up to temp and you regulate it......put food in...the temp drop for a bit but comes back up to your setting before loading it. Once I do it I don't go out other than to check the temp of the meat a couple times....ribs are really "set it and forget it"...now where is my can of spray on hair

Doc, I guess if you want to look at it in a very literal sense...probably none of us are true hunters. I guess if I really want to evaluate what a true hunter is I would have to think of the native Americans or the pioneers of old. The ones that really had it as a survival necessity. For me...if I am not successful in my hunting I go home ...reach into the fridge and take something out for dinner. The very lives of my family do not depend on my skill as a hunter. I think that is part of the draw for us though....keeping us in touch with that tradition...the history...the sense of accomplishment and thinking we could if we had to.

The way that last guy was shaking befor ethe shot I would have bet he couldn't do it..lol

I agree...I am not capable of making an ethical shot at 60-70 yards. my equipment and skill level is not there. So I wouldn't book a hunt like that. I hate to put the word ethical into this thread as Geno mentioned but the KEY is your limitations and understanding them. I say if you can sit at the range and consistently dump arrows into a paperplate out to a given yardage that would be your outside limit on your BEST day under PERFECT conditions. Personally i wouldn't run over 75% of my range limit. So before I would start shooting at deer under hunting conditions at 45 yard I would have to be range perfect at 60...but that is for me

BS on the 100 yards...IMO

DEC “TIPP” PROGRAM GOES ONLINE
Culvercreek hunt club replied to HuntingNY's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
I am not afraid of approaching anyone on their offenses....but with a wife and a child at home you really have to think of the consequences. Most of these violations rarely carry any jail time and that is a perfect recepie for retribution. tough call -

Northe easten whitetails I would agree but western ranges are routinely longer. If you are limiting yourself to 40 yards and headed on a mountain goat hunt ....I would probably say save your money...you really just limited your possibilities. with my practice time this past year I was comfortable at 30yds......years with more time I was comfortable to 40.....but all kills have been under 30

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)

I didn't think he meant accurate killing yardage. This past fall I didn't believe in the 60-70 yard bow kills but a buddy proved me wrong on that. Mountain goat at 62 yards and he was unbelievable on the range. It meant crazy practice and he was vital accurate to 70 yards. I didn't believe it until I saw it. That said all mine are under 30 yard kills...lol -
What is the kill range of a crossbow?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to First-light's topic in Bow Hunting
It was bench shooting. I would bet in a true hunting situation it might still be pretty close. I can imagine in the cocked position those babies are pretty hard to lean up against a tree to steady yourself. the string is at an angle all the way back to the trigger area. Take an average hunter with a shotgun and put hi off hand and I bet a lot would have a hard time laying in a paper plate at 75 off hand.
