Tomorrow is our Hunter's Safety course. One of our volunteers has opened their camp for us to do it there. We'll have the class, enjoy some venison chili I am making and have a chance to actually walk the property to see deer sign, get them into different style stands and enjoy some fresh air. (maybe not so fresh after the chili). Since range day was almost entirely bench shooting, we will be doing a little off shooting sticks and off hand. I really want them to have some more practice and have a firm understanding of their limitations and the advantages of some sort of rest. I'll post up some pics on Monday

Last year Ryan shot the biggest buck that has been taken on our place. I had my hand on his shoulder while he aimed. I thought about pushing hem out to the way since my gun was in my hand...lol. Just kidding, I was happier than if I had taken it myself. For me, seeing that "rush" in them and feeling proud that I helped is what it was all about. I told Matt that I'd send all the presentations ans stuff we modified and used if you guys want. I know National hasn't gotten to set up a "complete package" to just hand over to the branches.

I've had it before. Very good. Under a nuisance permit I believe burying or burning is what they want done. We never recovered any we shot on the permits becasue the water was deep and they sink like a rock when you shoot them.

Call the DEC. You can get a nuisance permit which will allow you to remove a dam or lodge. I am sure he is building a dam first. Usually they are living in a bank den at this point. The permit will also allow you to "do about anything you want short of explosives to get the little bugger. Easiest is rip a hole int he dam and sit with a spot light. Shotgun with number 4's does a nice job.

Wander around a chicken raising and processing facility and you will be running to get some pork...lol. Chickens are the filthiest animals alive.

Glad to see you guys had success at the markets. Start a waiting list for next year with any you can't get in. ours filled up 1/2 way with last years waiting list. How many mentors do you have lined up? I don't know how good the properties you have to take them on are but boy over 8 could be a big commitment. We had 2 folks last year that took us 4 and 5 hunts to get them a deer and that was in High population areas.

That is wonderful!! Congrats. I am betting hunting season will seem like a whole different experience.

My sophomore year in high school I had a severe concussion. That would have been back in 1981 and there certainly wasn't the insight or hype that there is today. There was no concussion protocol. Basically get an all clear from family doctor and good to go. It happened at the end of the first quarter. I remembered the hit and my whole body feeling like pins and needles. like when you sleep on your arm and it starts to come back around. I played the second quarter, went through half time and played the 3rd quarter and the start of the 4th. It was like I "came to" at that point but couldn't remember my play assignments. They took me off the field, I couldn't remember peoples names, who was president or what day it was. Over the next week things came back but there has always been a black hole from the hit until I "came to". A week and a half later I was back playing. I really put up a stink becasue my parents wanted me out for the season and they gave in. In hind sight they were right. Especially given what we know now. I know you said he is really good. (I know some on here are saying "well that explains a lot"..lol) Reality is he MAY end up with a scholarship and is unlikely to ever make a living doing it professionally. I can guarantee he will need that brain for the rest of his life, though. It's a call you and the Mrs will have to make and I am SURE it will not be popular with him if you decide he is out. This is one of the lonely at the top decisions and one you make as a parent, not his friend. Good luck on this.

Some may have seen me post I am taking up a little trapping. I really don't have any concerns dispatching anything I may be targeting, releasing or coming across as a byproduct catch. I do have some concerns on old Pepe Le Pew though. I do not intend on using any box traps so I am wondering how others handle them. (Mostly coil spring, body gripping and DP's) I have been reading a ton and on this topic I have heard everything from just talking calming to them as you approach (yeah I don't think so), head of lung shots, syringe pole with acetone and a host of other hair brained options. General consensus seems to be there is no guaranteed way to avoid a spray. what is you experience?

I honestly thing thee baiting could be pretty easily regulated for the bears. Stay away form the foods a deer would eat and you'd be good. bread products, bacon grease and meat.

If I had known I was gonna live this long I would have taken better care of myself. Lol

Glad you are ok. It is a dicey thing to do by yourself. I have done it and it isn't pretty. Best way I have found to lower or even raise one is to use long ratchets as a temporary back support. You know those little ropes they give you to tie to the stand, go around the back of the tree and then attach to the ladder below the mid support bar? They make good straps to raise the stand too. Attach the straps to platform or behind the seat. place foot of ladder where it about goes. use the straps to raise it up, adjust location and step ladder into ground. attach mid support cross straps behind the tree and attach to the ladder just below mid support. Tighten them up a bit. cross fingers and go up to put on the top strap. come down and attach the cheap ropes they provide for the back cross ties. The back cross straps really do make it pretty solid.

Pint of Hydrogen peroxide and a 1/4 cup of baking soda. mix well. add in 2 table spoons of Dawn dish washing liquid and remix. lather the dog with entire solution but be careful not to get into the eyes. work into a complete foam and keep scrubbing. rinse well with warm water. This was given to me by a trapper who washes the actual skunks he catches and he swears it totally removes the smell from them and his dogs. EDIT--late to the party. I see someone already posted the recipe.

I take it you are gap shooting using the arrow tip? I am actually running a single site pin. Mine is built off a compound riser so I just put the old site bracket back on it.

If I get a crack at her the skin is getting tanned.

It's starting to feel second nature. I have been going into the back yard each night and just shooting 3 arrows. I will try pushing it back now but these have all been 15 yards.

doing anything different with your meat?

Hard to beat a smoked roast that is shaved for sandwiches. -

I'll let you try some of mine if you want to. There is no reason that it can't be frozen and then thawed and canned. If you like it then you can do a bunch. Cut the pieces in stew meat size and freeze. -
but the ratings are apples to apples, No? the compounds don't hit the advertised speeds either. My 370 isn't close once I put all the bells and whistles on it. The energy is another issue since most of the crossbows are tossing a heavier projectile that most compound shooters. But at teh ranges most of us shoot how important is KE? It would be akin to comparing how far and ought 6 bullet went when it went through a deer compared to a 300 WinMag.

Obsession Lawless is 370 fps. That does outperform many of NY legal crossbows. 340-360fps is pretty common in the upper shelf compounds.
