I am not waiting to shoot him...lmao! The damn thing dissapears as soon as hunting season comes around. I have TRAIL CAMERA pics of him for the last 3 years. he is a huge 150"+ 12 point (10 point with 2 kickers on his left). I don't shoot young deer that I know have lots of potential, but damn, i would definitely shoot a 3.5 year old mounter!!! Here are the pictures of him from 2011, 2012 and 2013. Disregard the time stamp on the last picture (that says January of 2011). My batteries died and when i changed them, I forgot to reset the date and time. That last picture is September 26, 2013 (couple weeks ago).

Yeah, no worries. I personally hunt with a .44 magnum when I decide to hunt with my pistol. I don't mess around. lol. -
I can only laugh at a few of the responses in here about: "All the violence on tv and video games with people getting mowed down, and you are worried about a kid watching a deer die." That is no defense to responsible hunting. MY KIDS don't watch that #$@# on TV or those video games. That is NOT a dose of reality (as someone else mentioned). Young brains do NOT have the mental capacity to understand what is going on. It does create issues with them. Just because you have a freakishly strong kid or can pull a 40# at age 5 or 6 or 8 or whatever, doesn't mean they are ready. Pick up a book and read about early childhood developement and the stages your brain goes thorugh as a child. No wonder this world is so screwed up. Do you remember school shootings, etc when WE were kids? NO! What has changed? Ask yourself that question. I take my 5 year old out in the woods all the time. We watch the deer and turkeys with binoculars. We shed hunt. We look for turkey feathers. I get him involved in the outdoors. its a process. I have a chipmunk .22 that is perfect for him to start plinking targets in the next year or so. Another fun activity to get kids involved in the outdoors. the state doesn't pick the age based on average strenght. Trust me. They pick it based on the level of responsibilty and maturity someone should have at a given age.

I didn't say I would HUNT with a .38. I was just stating that you basically can hunt with anythign other than a .22 -
yeah, good luck getting a deer past 3.5 in NYS. That is a grandpa around here. I have one on my cameras I have watched for 3 years now that I guess about 6.5. By far the oldest deer I have ever watched (which is pretty sad).

I believe that there is a minimum of .38 cal to carry for deer. Not that you would want to carry anything less than that anyways. -
My son is 5 and there is no way he is in the woods with a bow, deer hunting. Not sure the logic behind a 4 year old doing that. Not to mention they don't ahve the mental capacity or maturity to process that at that age. You could actually deter a kid from hunting more than help him once he sees a wounded animal "crying" or bloody mess. I think the age is appropriate. Maybe NY actually has it right for once and the other states are F'd up! lol. I know this is off topic, since the thread merely started with a simple question as to why the different ages. To that answer, I don't know...lol.

And yes, back tags are ridiculous. There is not a chance in hell I am putting a hole through my jacket! My tag is in my back pack. Nobody has ever given me a hard time about it.

Oh, this was when I was a wee little lad. I just had a plain BO vest I would wear. I understand the need for a patter to break your silloette up. As I just posted a second before this one, I also wear camo because I don't want other hunters to see me either. its not just a deer thing.
-
It is part human, I agree. One of the main reasons I wear camo is so other hunters CANT see me. I have had, many, many fun encounters with hunters doing stupid ##@$ right in front of me. In 2 occastions I have had people arrested who tresspassed AND Shot a deer right in front of me. I don't want to be seen. Simple.
-
I would never knock someone for wearing orange and being safe, but I am head toe camo for all seasons (while in my stand). I don't walk around, so I am not concerned about being shot. If someone thinks I am a deer in a tree stand, then Orange wouldn't help anyway. If I am tracking a deer or doing a drive, then yes I wear orange. As far as the comment about deer not seeing red (or orange), I personally don't care what a biologist thinks, they are full of BS. I can't tell you how many times in the past when I did wear orange, that a deer picks me out like I have a flashing neon sign on me. In camo, I have had deer damn near step on me without being seen. Blending in with your surroundings is the key IMO. i am 10000% believer in camo.

Maybe he forgot to buy a hunting liscense so he was waiting until to today to do so, then go take pictures of his deer...lol
-
yeah, no tine length so probably 100" or so. Maybe 110 if your lucky. 2.5-3.5 I would guess.
-
Yeah, just read the thread topic, I am assuming you are referring to Seneca Lake?
-
What lake are you referring to? i am not from your area.
-
Congrats! There is nothing more precious in life than your own children!! Cherrish every moment of it.

I saw a small 8 (video on another thread) working a scrape hard. The bigger bucks in my area still seem to be nocturnal. I haven't seen a doe being chased yet either. I am thinking about another week or two here in WNY.

just a baby. He hasn't learned the secret of rubbing on pines to make his horns look dark and intimidating! lol
-
his other eye is on the other side of his head! He is not a flounder with both eyes on 1 side. lol. that is why you can't see it. His head is faced forward and perpendicular to the camera.

Youth Hunt, don't know if anyone else had this
beachpeaz replied to Suilleabhain's topic in General Chit Chat
10000% no way that the DEC is out in a helicopter triangulating shooting. They barely have guys to walk around and check points and look for tags. Our state is bankrupt. No funding for something like that. -
I had a similar issue and it was 100% what I was wearing. My gloves that I had on I had not practiced with them. They were thick enough that it moved my anchor point away from my face 1/2". That throws an arrow off HUGE at 20, 30, 40 yards down field!!! I have shot many, many times from the ground and a tree stand at I have found a negligable difference if any at all. I would highly encourange you make sure that your bow is sighted in with what you actually wear when you are hunting (IE: mask, hat, jacket, gloves) and not what you practiced with in the middle of summer.
-
yup, people are idiots! I have zero tolerance on my property. Someone gets kicked off and / or arrested every year. If for nothing else, it will be the guy that tresspasses, climbs in my stand, falls out, then sues me for it not being safe. If you have the mentallity to cheat (IE: Tresspass), then you have the mentallity to think that the world owes you something (IE: frivelous lawsuits). NO THANKS! lol
-
Thats actually a great idea about the slingshot and cotton balls! Not sure why i haven't thought of that one yet.....
-
people are idiots!! have a good season also!
