thats my opinion. I really don't know how "tame" the deer was. It SOUNDS like the deer wasn't too wild. It was shot basically in the middle of the day just casually eating in a field...lol. Again, if you are hunting and you see that, you don't wait around to see if it is a fluke. Just not sure if you found out after that it was almost a tame deer, did you really "hunt" the stupid thing??

I responded to another thread regarding the Wisconsin record buck that was shot and thought it would be an intersting thread by itself. True Story: While dropping off my buck at the taxidermist to be mounted, there was a very large buck there waiting (well over 160"). MUCH larger than anythign I have ever seen come out of my area in WNY. Chatting with the taxidermist about it, come to find out it had escaped the local whitetail farm about 5-10 miles from where I hunt. The buck was shot less than a mile from where I hunt. Could have just as easily ended up in front of me given his path. The guy had no idea it had escaped, so of course he is going to shoot it. He was hunting legally during the season. Nothing fishy about the situation. He did find out after the fact and had it mounted anyway (even brags about it). Question is: Would you mount it and brag about it given the circumstances that you find out after the fact? or would you kind of keep that on the downlow?

Looks like the first real giant of the season has fallen

True Story: I am at my taxidermist dropping off my deer to be mounted (the one in my avatar), and there is a beautiful buck sitting there waitng as well. Much, much bigger than I have ever seen come out of where I hunt in WNY. I asked him about it and he said that it was shot less than 10 miles from where I hunt. I was dumbfounded. Come to find out, the deer escaped the whitetail farm that is a few miles from where I hunt. Got shot during the season and the guy had it mounted. Do I blame the hunter? HELL NO! Who wouldn't shoot it? he had zero idea that the deer had escaped. I do not call into question that Wisconsin buck from last year, because I ASSUME that hunter had good intentions, however, the circumstances are almost identical. A deer in the woods is a deer in the woods. -
This is a dangerous subject as I have had many heated debates in this forum over this. I have had people arrested that I catch on my posted property. I have ZERO tolerance. One of the most important points that hasn't been mentioned, and my #1 reason, is simply the liability! NO, I don't want someone shooting a deer off my property and that IS important, however, i cant afford to have that P.O.S person who tresspasses, then turn around and sue me when he falls out of my tree stand! Or gets whacked in the head by a falling branch, etc. Those very people with that low-life mentality to not obey laws are the same ones who then find it your fault they got hurt. This is why i have ZERO tolerance. I catch you, the police WILL be called and you WILL be hauled off. PERIOD.

Neighbor at camp showed me this pic from last November

Probably pushing 130". 8's are hard to get any higher than that. -
I have succesfully planted Apples, Cherries and a Peach tree in my back yard in the last couple years. When i say succesfully, I learned the hard way and it took me a couple attempts. They are FINALLY going good. Things I can tell you for sure that are SUPER important (that I overlooked and killed my trees): 1) SOME varieties are not hardy enough for our region so they actually graft the tree onto the root stock of another tree that is hardy. AVOID grafted trees at all cost. The failure rate is through the roof (first mistake I made) 2) Spend the extra money on a more mature tree (not saying a giant tree, but don't by the tiny one on sale for $50). Most of the issues the trees have are the first few years. Buying a tree that is already somewhat established will save you a ton of headaches (second mistake i made). 3) Protect your trees from Deer AND RABBITS. I was stupid enough not to spend $0.99 cents on the plastic wrap that goes around the base of the tree. A rabbit promptly chewed the bark all the way around the base and killed my tree (third mistake I made). and yes, learn to prune them, it is very important for the health of the tree. I NOW have very health trees growing, but that only due to learning from my 3 mistakes above and replanting trees twice now! Good luck.

Looks like the first real giant of the season has fallen
beachpeaz replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
That buck that was shot last year was a farmed deer. It was shot free range, but thats not how it grew that big. The fact that another 240" non-typical comes out of the same area is very suspicious. Almost ALL deer that are fed a special diet to grow that big, grow large non-typical antlers. it is usuallly the first red flag of misdoing. -
didn't know you were in a "special" county, being Suffolk County that has some extra restrictions. For us normal people in upstate, NY, it is very clear. You can shoot 2 bucks for the 3 seasons no matter how you slice it.
-
You are correct. Did you get that impression from what I said? I said that you could use your bow to hunt during the regular season (opposite of what you said. IE: You could put your shotgun down and hunt with your Matthews). You can NOT use a regular season tag during bow season.
-
I regular "shotgun" season (which you can use your bow if you wanted) and 1 for bow season = 2 bucks.
-
Important to note that our stupid state only allows 1 buck taken during the regular "shot gun" season and 1 buck taken in EITHER the bow or Muzzloader but NOT both! If you shoot one during bow, you can't shoot one on Muzzloader. I hunt all 3 seasons so I tend to do some major trophy hunting during bow so I can still hunt Muzzy.

Which side of the fence are you on?

Well, its obvious to see who the Democrats are.... -
that is one ugly @#@ deer! I would shoot it just so the other deer stop picking on it.
-
hate when that happens! I had an unspuspecting branch in front of my camera last year. I had 1,500 pictures of it posing in various positions for a month. Lol.
-
cool pic.

its even more disgusting in real life...lol. The sad part is, the 160" deer I shot (3rd one pictured) was with that monster apparently. I shot mine after hiking about 4 miles into an area just at light. He came over a ridge and was about to dissapear into a gorge. I assumed he was alone and only had about a 2 minute window to decide to shoot. My brother-in-law shot that giant 2 weeks later in the same area. Someone who was watching those deer said they were together all summer! So, that is my luck. 5 minutes earlier, that big one was probably just in front of the one I shot! ugh. Oh well. That is hunting for you.
-
Thats awesome! thanks for the lead. It is definitely on my list to hunt in the next few years.
-
Agreed! And I don't see a DEC officer hassleing you about a personal protection piece nicely concealed. If you are carrying around a S&W 44 with a scope, then you are an a idiot. lol

hysterical. Thanks for sharing.

the secret to staying warm in your stand (don't tell anyone...lol): I buy the large size handwarmers (ya know, the ones that are like $0.99 at Dicks or Walmart. You open the package, shake em and they get warm). Over top my underarmor, I have a t-shirt with a breast pocket (heart side). I activiate one of those, slide it in the pocket and zip up my jacket. For $0.99, if you put it where I said, it warms your whole body (being by your heart). Keeps me warm for a good 4 hours before I replace it! Try it! Seriously. -
I have Montana on my list to get to some day! Looks like a great place to hunt Whitetail and Mulies.

Counting down the longest 3 weeks of the year. T-20 days baby

I am going to miss opening week of bow. Hard to complain too much because I will be Mule Deer hunting in Utah! I will be super antzy though knowing the season is open and I can't hunt. -
