In response to how to manage the herd I don't think there is one. I have some time on my hands and throw my 2 cents in but I respect every ones perspective, that said here is what I think. There are too many variables to managing a herd, you just can't do it. I'll take my place for example. Big chunks of property around me, I have 140 acres. We all know we need to shoot doe but not many are taken. Roughly 1500 acres around me, mine and neighbors combined. I think we shot 8 Doe. Is that 8 too many or 8 too short? We shot 19 buck. Who is too say what is perfect. Land next door had 8 -10 hunters come in from out of state and hunt horns for 4 days then leave for the season. How do you manage that. They will not shoot Doe, those get taken at home. Land behind me about 400 acres is hunted by 5 people thats it. My neighbor up the road 300 acres shoots 1 buck per year, has 4 other people in for first three days then he shuts it down. My camp shot 10 deer 2 Doe 8 Bucks, he gave me crap about going out at muzzy season and the Holiday hunt. We can bitch to each other cause we are good friends but I said we have 4 families that love venison so 11 deer is ok to take. His take leave the deer alone loves to see them out in the woods and are pressured too much. I get that and agree with it. But he also walks his dog every morning through the same woods that get hunted. Isn't he pressuring them also by spooking them on his walk. I'm going to turn 62 this April. Yes I have a hit list of bucks that I would like to shoot every year. I have some really nice gun bucks over trhe years and one Pope and young bow buck. Opening day I shot a typical 6 point my head was not in the right place and I took that buck. How do you manage that? How do you manage the herd.......is it the moment you pull the trigger, could be. I believe it is, I have some hunters that come up here. I ask please try to take a better buck then your last. It doesn't work. Time constraints put pressure on them and they want venison so some young bucks get shot. I did it this year but time was not an issue. I think you can argue on and on about this and there is no answer. I saw someone post on another site that they were happy to fill thee Doe tags in one afternoon sit. You shoot them long range they don't move. To me that is greedy not hunting but killing. Then again he may have an army to feed back at home. You just can't put your finger on it!

Supply and demand! -
Hey guys thanks. That is what I'm doing . Got an appointment at a local shop and they will do the smoke check on the system. Highly recommended place so I should be ok.

So I have this truck it has almost 300k on it. Got an evap code engine light on the other day. Easy fix was the EVAP purge valve on the engine and new gas cap didn't fix it. Next step would be to change out the solenoid and charcoal canister. Car parts.com I can get them for about $300. It will be a pain in the ass to do but I'm no mechanic but could get through it. Thought is am I just chasing my tail and if I do the work and still get the code it would suck. I could bring it to service at the dealership but that is going to be expensive. I'm original owner and use the truck mostly around town back and forth to work. Has a second motor at 200k. Runs great Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Burt

Got ya. Yeah mine unscrews also but i need the tool to do it. I'll start bringing it with me for sure. Congrats again! -
6th picture of the Doe and Fawn. I let them walk twice during bow season. Then one day she blew up on me. Snorted 30 times or so at me. I was half way up the hill walking out and she was still at it. One of the biggest Doe I have ever seen. Got to be 2.5-3.5. I'll never do that again.

Awesome hunt. Hate those misfires. How did you take out the breach plug to get the powder out. Do you bring the tool on the hunt with you? -
Last picture has a deer with his head in the air. I created a mock scrape with a licking branch. These deer have been using it for months now.

Hunted with my neighbor. We didn't see any. Went for a quick walk on my property and had these two come by 1/2 hr before I did. I would of passed but they were out at 9 am. Button buck was before him. -

Last day seems to be real nice. 36, 3 mph winds from west. Good luck all. -
Sorry to report no luck. 10:30-2:30 covered a lot of area found nothing. Still had some snow in the woods but could not pick up trail from last blood. I'll listen for crows next few days. Too bad.
-
Headed out a bit later than expected. Fog is really bad. I just have a suspicion its in the area I searched near dark. Very thick with briars. Snow is gone no more blood trail or tracks. Probably start there then spread out. This deer went pretty far leaving a lot of blood. Just hope it kept bleeding and bedded. Leaving here around 10. I'll report back. Thinking about this deer kept me up most of the night, just can't believe I didn't find it with all that blood loss or a blood bed.

I get what your saying but if holes clogged with guts most of blood from mouth. I don't know. Got to give it one more try. Yeah what a way to go, three days of season left and your jaw shot off. Happy Holiday hunt!
