Doc I get what all you said but don't you think we change as hunters as we get older? I know I have. We lay down give back and ease off the trigger. Time flys by us and new ways to hunt or attract deer come about and we as the elders not frown upon it but just don't get it. It's the young generation that will never get what we had. I would take that any day of the week. Cold tent warm fire some grub and do it all over again to harvest a whitetail!

Important that you got to hunt with your son! My Neighbor next door has family in Maryland and you are allowed to bait and shoot a ton of deer. I always get invited but never go. Just not my thing.
-
The whole bait thing would not sit right with me. Just like hunting with dogs if you grew up doing it, it's your way. I just can't see pulling the trigger on a deer munching on a pile of corn. This debate could go on and on JMO.

Doc thinks its a ligament/muscle issue. On some anti inflammatories for a week. Rest and needs to lose 10 lbs! Don't we all! Thanks everyone.

Back legs. Thing is this morning she acted fine. Got up stretched, ran outside came back in all happy. Still need a vet check I think?
-
Yes Eric! YouTube channel is great. They only work on local vehicles. Very lucky to have found him!

Bailey my 2.5 year old Curr has been favoring her left leg for a week. I bought supplements and been giving them to her. She has a hard time standing up after laying down for a while. Today I took them for a walk for about an hour she was absolutely fine. We get back to the house and she is now favoring both back legs, won't lay in her bed and pretty much wont move. That is not to say if I take them out she won't get up and pee. She is a big dog with long legs. Eat and sleeps well. Thoughts? I'm thinking making a vet appointment?

So I was recommended to Main Street Auto in Avoca. What a nice place and friendly service. Dropped car off day before appointment and they had it done same day. Turned out a wire harness had a bad wire in it. It was to the solenoid to the Evap system. $160 bucks and I'm a happy man. They get my service in the future, great place and people.

In all my years I only saw one at the ol H and E grill in Burdett NY. Nice big 8 pt but was missing parts! lol

Not on the other site. Unless a name change.

Look at that spike!

Cheapest venison I ever paid for was on a camping/hunting trip on State land in the Catskills. Eat, sleep and hunt. Drag your deer out if you are lucky! Can't put a price on those memories.

Yes we are guilty of sharing some of the trail cam picts with him. I get that but he has to learn about eating a tag. I'm glad he took the deer now next year let him decide how he wants to hunt.

My brother has a great attitude towards hunting. He has his name on the biggest deer taken on my property but he never lets that get in the way of a good hunt and kill. Doe , small buck or yearling. To him it's the hunt. Opening day he has his 14 year old Grandson with him. They have this half rack 6 pt come walking down 15 yards from the stand. My brother says for him to shoot, the kids says no I want a 10 pt. My brother looks at him and says this aint TV, that is your first deer now take it. We both had to remind the kid back at the buck pole what hunting is all about. He got it but it's unfortunate what was in his mind.

I tried my hand in food plots this year. Now I have areas I mow that are in the woods and the deer love it. Nothing invested just mowing. This year we planted. I enjoyed doing for a number of reasons. First to see how good it would turn out, always wanted to be a farmer. Draw in the Does and hopefully a buck will follow. Give them some food for the winter. It's not much but will help a few. Honestly my plots are small and really a waste of time and money but I enjoyed it. Mowing the area keeping the grasses green and does the same. It never once crossed my mind, especially in my area which is heavy in Ag, that I would keep them on my land. These deer cruise everywhere and there is so much food around it wouldn't make a difference. As for trail cameras I love the picts they take but they have never helped me shoot a deer. Trying to remember back when it was spoken word of a big buck in the area, those days are gone. Everything changes. The young guys at my camp are into the plots and high end cameras. That will keep on evolving and drones will soon be the norm. Yes a lot has changed.

Hunting Yotes with the dogs.
First-light replied to First-light's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
They might be starting today or next weekend. Got the text for permission. Everyone on board. -
What is cool is that he has it set up for video also. The videos come in a little later then the pictures. My brother shot a doe in a food plot with the camera on it. We got two pictures of when he shot then my buddy sends the video with sound of the deer being shot. too cool.

My buddy has a cellular plan. 3 cameras all year long. Not sure what he pays. I have never been asked to take out a SD card. Only thing I have to do every 3-4 months is charge battery when the solar panel doesn't get enough light.
-
We have 3 Reveal cameras. I maintain them. Each one has solar set up and rechargeable batteries. They last a long time out in the field. I think I recharge them 3 times a year.

Sat/Sun good for me.

2 hrs for me also, that works.

In response to how to manage the herd I don't think there is one. I have some time on my hands and throw my 2 cents in but I respect every ones perspective, that said here is what I think. There are too many variables to managing a herd, you just can't do it. I'll take my place for example. Big chunks of property around me, I have 140 acres. We all know we need to shoot doe but not many are taken. Roughly 1500 acres around me, mine and neighbors combined. I think we shot 8 Doe. Is that 8 too many or 8 too short? We shot 19 buck. Who is too say what is perfect. Land next door had 8 -10 hunters come in from out of state and hunt horns for 4 days then leave for the season. How do you manage that. They will not shoot Doe, those get taken at home. Land behind me about 400 acres is hunted by 5 people thats it. My neighbor up the road 300 acres shoots 1 buck per year, has 4 other people in for first three days then he shuts it down. My camp shot 10 deer 2 Doe 8 Bucks, he gave me crap about going out at muzzy season and the Holiday hunt. We can bitch to each other cause we are good friends but I said we have 4 families that love venison so 11 deer is ok to take. His take leave the deer alone loves to see them out in the woods and are pressured too much. I get that and agree with it. But he also walks his dog every morning through the same woods that get hunted. Isn't he pressuring them also by spooking them on his walk. I'm going to turn 62 this April. Yes I have a hit list of bucks that I would like to shoot every year. I have some really nice gun bucks over trhe years and one Pope and young bow buck. Opening day I shot a typical 6 point my head was not in the right place and I took that buck. How do you manage that? How do you manage the herd.......is it the moment you pull the trigger, could be. I believe it is, I have some hunters that come up here. I ask please try to take a better buck then your last. It doesn't work. Time constraints put pressure on them and they want venison so some young bucks get shot. I did it this year but time was not an issue. I think you can argue on and on about this and there is no answer. I saw someone post on another site that they were happy to fill thee Doe tags in one afternoon sit. You shoot them long range they don't move. To me that is greedy not hunting but killing. Then again he may have an army to feed back at home. You just can't put your finger on it!
